Abstract:AIM To describe the expression of Fas/ FasL in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. dysplasia tissues and normal mucosa. METHODS Twenty-eight consecutive esophageal cancer specimens were collected and continuous paraffin slices were made from the normal mucosa. paracarcinoma tissue (mucusa with dysplasia) and carcinoma tissue of each specimen. The expressions of Fas/ FasL were analyzed with immunohistochemistry in order to find the difference in the above-mentioned tissues. RESULTS Compared with esophageal squamous carcinoma, the positive rate (89% vs 100%) and level (2.9 vs 5.0) of Fas expression showed significant difference (P<0.05). in normal esophageal mucosa while the positive of Fas expression (89% vs 96% ) in dysplasia tissues showed no significant difference (P>0.05) but the positive level (2.9 vs 4.0) was significantly different (P<0.05). Compared with esophageal squamous carcinoma, the positive area (100% vs 86%) and level (5.0 vs 2.7) of FasL expression were significantly different in normal esophageal mucosa (P<0.05). The level of FasL expression (5.0 vs 3.6 vs 2.7) in 3 different tissues showed significant difference. But there was no significant difference in the expression of Fas/ FasL in carcinoma with different differentiation grades. CONCLUSION Down-regulation of Fas and up-regulation of FasL are early and frequent events associated with the evolution of the esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.
