Expression and clinical significance of ATF4 and RPL41 proteins in epithelial ovarian carcinoma tissues

OBJECTIVE Activating trancription factor 4 (ATF4)was detected in various of tumor cells,which was highly expressed among hypoxia areas.It was correlated with tumor malignancy.Ribosomal protein L41 (RPL41)could induct tumor cells death and cellcycle arrest,playing a significant role in regulation of ATF4.This study was designed to study the expressions of ATF4 and RPL41 in epithelial ovarian carcinoma,and investigate the expression and clinic signifi-cance of ATF4 and RPL41 in epithelial ovarian carcinoma (EOC).METHODS To analyze the relationship of ATF4 and RPL41,the expression levels of ATF4 and RPL41 were evaluated by SP immunohistochemistry in 470 cases of ovarian ep-ithelial cancer,42 cases of ovarian borderline tumor,27 cases of ovarian benign tumor and 46 cases of normal ovarian tis-sues.RESULTS The expressions of ATF4 (86.60%,407/470)in EOC were higher than that in normal ovarian and be-nign ovarian tissues (39.73%,29/73)and borderline ovarian tissues (73.81%,31/42),which showed significant differ-ence (P <0.001;P =0.024).The expressions of ATF4 protein in epithelial ovarian carcinoma were higher than that in other ovarian tissues,and had association with the histology grade,tumor stage,histological subtype and lymphatic node metastasis (P <0.05).The expressions of RPL41 (82.19%,60/73)in normal ovarian and benign ovarian tissues were higher than that in borderline ovarian tissues (54.76%,23/42)and epithelial ovarian carcinoma (37.45%,176/470),which showed significant difference (P =0.002;P <0.001).The expressions of RPL41 protein in normal ovarian and be-nign tumor were higher than that in other ovarian tissues and in epithelial ovarian carcinoma.RPL41 expression had no as-sociation with tumor stage,histology grade and histological subtype (P >0.05),but with lymphatic node metastasis (P =0.016).CONCLUSION The increased expression of ATF4 and depressed expression of RPL41 play important roles in the carcinogenesis and differentiation of ovarian epithelial carcinoma.
