Chief nurses' true feeling on dealing with the reform measures: a qualitative research

Objective To comprehend executive ability of chief nurses.Methods A qualitative research based on phenomenology was conducted to investigate 15 chief nurses with in depth interview.Head nurses were asked to talk about their executive ablility of carring out reform measures.Results Four themes were extracted through reading and analysis.Firstly,chief nurses′ understanding and attitudes affected the enforcement of the reform measures.Secondly,chief nurses liked to deal with the measures which could promote the development of nursing profession,which was related to clinical nursing work and which did something good to nurses.Thirdly,chief nurses were unwilling to enforce doctrinal or latitudinarian measures.Fourthly,chief nurses believed that exe-cutive ability should be paid more attention to.Conclusion Chief nurses′ are able to identify the nature of instructions given by their superiors.The administrators should give practical and clear instructions to head nurses.And they should supervise head nurses′ implement of the instructions,so as to ensure the implementation of nursing work.
