Abstract:This article describes the rationale for applying interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) to the treatment of patients who have borderline personality disorder and explains the adaptation of standard IPT to that end. The authors describe the preliminary stages of adapting IPT for a pilot study to test its feasibility and potential efficacy and speculate on potentially therapeutic mechanisms for IPT in treating patients who have borderline personality disorder.
