Effect of Taohong Siwu Decoction on Low Back Function and Bone Mineral Density of Patients with OVCF after PVP

Objective To observe the effect of modified Taohong Siwu decoction on low back function and bone mineral density of patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures(OVCF)after percutaneous vertebroplasty(PVP).Methods 110 patients with OVCF were divided into the control group and the experimental group according to the random number table method,with 55 cases in each group.They were given PVP surgery alone and PVP combined with modified Taohong Siwu decoction respectively.Changes in TCM symptom scores,degree of dysfunction[Oswestry Dysfunction Index(ODI)],pain degree[Visual Analogue Score(VAS)]and bone metabolism indexes[serum bone alkaline phosphatase(BALP),bone gla protein(BGP)]were observed.The occurrence of complications within 2 months after surgery was compared between the two groups.Results At 2 months after surgery,scores of TCM symptoms and scores of ODI and VAS in the two groups were significantly lower than those before surgery.Besides,the scores of experimental group were significantly lower than those of the control group at the same time(all P<0.05).Levels of BALP and BGP in the two groups were significantly higher than those before treatment,and the levels were significantly higher in the experimental group than those in the control group(both P<0.05).There was no significant difference in the overall incidence of complications between the two groups within 2 months after surgery(P>0.05).Conclusion Modified Taohong Siwu decoction combined with PVP can effectively improve symptoms,relieve pain,and promote functional recovery of OVCF patients,and it is conductive to enhancing osteoblast activity.
