Investigation on the mental state of the main caregivers of newly diagnosed epileptic children

Objective To investigate the mental state of the main caregivers of newly diagnosed epilepsy children and analyze its influencing factors.Methods 40 primary caregivers of children with epilepsy diagnosed within one month in the Department of Neurology of Xijing Hospital,Xi’an,China were selected as the subjects.The general information questionnaire,Self-Rating Anxiety Scale(SAS)and Self-rating Depression Scale(SDS)scales were distributed,and the results were statistically analyzed.Results The score of SDS(44.73±6.44)was higher than that of the national norm(27.82±14.42).The score of SAS(38.57±5.12)was higher than that of the national norm(29.78±10.07).The SDS score was negatively correlated with family income(P<0.05),while the SAS scores was negatively correlated with education level(P<0.05).Conclusion The scores of anxiety and depression of the main caregivers of newly diagnosed epileptic children are higher than the national norm,which shows that depression symptoms are obvious while anxiety symptoms are mild.The family income is the influencing factor of depression,and the education level is the influencing factor of anxiety state.
