Abstract: | The release of acetyl salicylic acid from directly compressed alginate tablets was investigated. The effect of the amount and type of alginate on the drug release rate was evaluated in different formulations. Four different grades of alginate were used. The in vitro release studies were carried out using the apparatus II (paddle) equipment as described in the USP 23/NF dissolution monograph. Dissolution medium was 0.1 M HCl for 2 h followed by phosphate buffer pH 6.8; both at 37 degrees C. Sustained drug release up to 16 h was achieved using sodium alginate in combination with dibasic calcium phosphate. |
