Abstract: | In this article, the predictive indices which have been developed during the last decade to assess the risk of complications during hospitalization are reviewed. These indices are based on the evaluation of nutritional and immunological parameters and are particularly suitable for the identification of the surgical patient at risk for postoperative septic complications. The authors also review the methods which have been proposed for the classification of the severity of disease in critically ill subjects and the sepsis score method for the prediction of clinical outcome in severely septic surgical patients. |
