| Abstract: | Objective To explore spiritual needs of patients with permanent colostomy and to provide a basis for spiritual care intervention.Methods Thirteen patients with permanent colostomy were selected for in-depth interviews following a qualitative research approach.Results Spiritual needs of patients with permanent colostomy included seven themes:roles change;maintenance of self-esteem;need for family support;lack of self-image;realization of self-worth;hope for life;and spiritual support.Conclusion The spiritual needs of patients with permanent colostomy are significantly individualized and varied,which is related to the characteristics of the disease itself.Based on improving the spiritual awareness of medical staff,self-esteem therapy and meaning therapy are implemented for patients to encourage them to conduct self-care and establish a social support system to meet the spiritual needs of patients. |
