Bronchial sleeve resection and pulmonary arterioplasty in surgical treatment of central lung cancer

Objective To summarize the experience with surgical treatment of central lung cancer with bronchial sleeve resection and pulmonary arterioplasty. Methods From May 1989 to May, 2009,52 cases of central lung cancer with bronchial - pulmonary involvement received arterial sleeve resection and reconstruction. The operations included circumferential resection or sleeve lobectomy in 38 cases, double sleeve lobectomy in 12 cases, and carinal resection and reconstruction in 2 cases. Results There was 1 case of operative death and 5（9.62% ） cases of operative complications. The survival rates at 12,36,60 months and 10 years were 75.8% ,57.4% ,34.6% and 13.2% respectively. Conclusion With the treat- ment of sleeve lobectomy or additional resection and reconstruction of pulmonary artery, great vessels or heart,the pulmonary function can be protected significantly,and the cure rate and the long term survival rate can be improved in patients with central lung cancer.
