Abstract: | This study measured the migration of persons with the acquired immunodeficiency virus (AIDS) between diagnosis and death using AIDS case and death reports from 12 states for 1985 to 1992. Of 49,805 persons with AIDS, 10.6% changed their place of residence, and half of these individuals who moved changed their state of residence. Migration had relatively little impact on the numbers of persons with AIDS in the largest metropolitan areas, which accounted for approximately 90% of AIDS diagnoses. Although only 3% of deaths occurred in residents of nonmetropolitan areas, the net effect of migration was a 24% increase in the number of persons with AIDS residing in such areas. |
