Abstract:Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and testosterone stimulate the production of a variety of proteins by immature Sertoli cells. A highly purified Sertoli cell preparation was incubated for 3 days with FSH and testosterone. Both androgen receptor protein and mRNA concentrations were markedly increased by FSH. Testosterone also increased the androgen receptor protein concentration, but did not increase the expression of the androgen receptor mRNA. It is concluded that FSH plays a role in the responsiveness of Sertoli cells to testosterone.
