Diagnosis and treatment of sickle cell retinopathy

Examination of a 49-year-old black female with a history of sickle cell anemia revealed proliferative sickle cell retinopathy. A review of the pathophysiology of the systemic disease as it relates to the clinical diagnosis and treatment of the retinopathy is presented.
