Abstract

In recent years, a proliferation of mentoring projects have been established in England and Wales, targeted at both offenders and drug users. This is, in part, a consequence of high-level encouragement to establish such schemes. Mentoring features throughout the Ministry of Justice’s Transforming Rehabilitation strategy as a tool to support offenders to ‘get their lives back on track’, and the 2017 drug strategy highlights the importance of peer mentoring for those engaged in treatment services. Using Kingdon’s multiple streams approach, the article accounts for the popularity of mentoring within criminal justice and drug policy despite a less than convincing evidence-base. His model is based upon an appreciation of three streams (problem, policies and politics) which coincide when a compelling problem is linked to a plausible solution that meets the test of political feasibility. It is argued that mentoring has come to be viewed as a cost-effective solution to reduce reoffending and improve drug treatment outcomes despite a lack of conclusive evidence. It has garnered support because of its fit with dominant political discourses around citizenship and civil society. Mentoring has received support from within and without government but its inherent appeal overshadows a lack of clarity of what mentoring is and insufficient theoretical understanding of why it might be effective. Consequently, it is proposed that the Good Lives Model, a strengths-based rehabilitation theory, might provide an appropriate theoretical base and inform discussions about the role of mentoring within desistance and recovery journeys.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Drug discovery depends critically upon published results from the academy. The reproducibility of preclinical research findings reported by academia in the peer-reviewed literature has been called into question, seriously jeopardizing the value of academic science for inventing therapeutics.

Areas covered: The corrosive effects of the reproducibility issue on drug discovery are considered. Purported correctives imposed upon academia from the outside deal mainly with expunging fraudulent literature and imposing punitive sanctions on the responsible authors. The salutary influence of such post facto actions on the reproducibility of discovery-relevant preclinical research data from academia appears limited. Rather, intentional doctoral-scientist education focused on data replicability and translationally-meaningful science and active participation of university entities charged with research innovation and asset commercialization toward ensuring data quality are advocated as key academic initiatives for addressing the reproducibility issue.

Expert opinion: A mindset shift on the part of both senior university faculty and the academy to take responsibility for the data reproducibility crisis and commit proactively to positive educational, incentivization, and risk- and reward-sharing practices will be fundamental for improving the value of published preclinical academic research to drug discovery.  相似文献

Abstract

As more and more women enter family businesses, or begin their own, the pool of talent available from “Moms” to mentor their adult children increases. This article discusses this relatively new phenomena and comments on the general differences noted between the mentoring styles of mothers and fathers of their own progeny. There is almost no literature about this, so the references are sparse. Relevant family dynamics in the context of family businesses are also discussed.  相似文献

An exploratory qualitative study was conducted for the Mrs. Doubtfire mentoring program designed to connect volunteers with young children (6–11 years) in residential care to help with the bedtime transition and develop positive relationships with caring adults. Details of the program are provided. Positive effects on the agency, staff, volunteers, and children are discussed. Mrs. Doubtfire provides an innovative approach to meeting needs of children in residential care while also building strong community relationships and dedicated volunteers.  相似文献

Having an advisor offers medical students many advantages, including increased likelihood of matching into their top choices. Interestingly, students who choose emergency medicine (EM) as a specialty are more likely to seek advising. However, finding and optimally utilizing an EM faculty advisor is often challenging for the medical student. In this article, we tackle the different ways to seek advising, including the ‘virtual advisor program’ implemented by the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, the ‘e-Advisor Program’ instigated by the Clerkship Director in EM Group, the ‘member exclusive mentorship program’ of the Emergency Medicine Residency Association, as well as peer-based mentoring. More so, we discuss the consensus recommendations developed by the Student Advising Task Force to guide both students planning to apply to EM and their advisors to ensure high-caliber advising.  相似文献

The University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy launched the Bill and Karen Campbell Faculty Mentoring Program (CMP) in 2006 to support scholarship-intensive junior faculty members.
