Young men constitute one of the highest risk groups for suicide in most countries. This gives reason to explore how meanings attached to masculinity can be evoked and handled when a young man takes his life. In-depth interviews with 5 to 8 informants for each of 10 suicides, as well as suicide notes, were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The suicides appeared as signature acts of compensatory masculinity with the following themes: When hope is gone, no one must know; weakness was never allowed; and suicide conducted in a way to present oneself as heroic. The handling of masculinity in triggering suicidal plans and in carrying out suicide is intrinsically connected to avoidance of help-seeking behavior. 相似文献

Gender and sexuality inequalities lie at the root of poor sexual and reproductive health (SRH). An India-based non-governmental organization (NGO) implemented a field-based methodology to integrate gender and sexuality into existing SRH projects in two states. Personal and organizational change occurred through critical analysis and experiential exercises which normalized topics on sexuality for program staff and communities. Staff learned how biases prevented them from engaging with communities. Community women came to understand sexual pleasure as an important aspect of strengthening the family and community. Mapping women's mobility revealed the link between sexuality, mobility and family honour. Gender myths, portraying men as oppressors, made explicit the narrow and biased picture of men that perpetuates through social norms maintained by staff and not only by communities in which they work. Methods improved social relations and prompted both behaviour and social changes at the community level. 相似文献

Drawing from an ethnography of HIV care in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, in this article I explore how the social imaginary surrounding gender relations shapes men’s experiences of seeking care for and living with HIV. Popular understandings of gender relations, which draw heavily on the machismo concept, intersect with a global health master narrative that frames women as victims in the AIDS epidemic in a way that generates a strong sentiment of blaming machismo within local HIV/AIDS-related services. Statements such as, “it’s because of machismo” are used to explain away epidemiological trends. Participant observation in the context of HIV care, coupled with illness narrative interviews, illuminate how blaming machismo shapes men’s experiences of care and the ways that they feel excluded from various forms of support. Thus, the illness experiences of men with HIV problematize the machismo concept and how it is drawn upon in the context of care. 相似文献

Based on ethnographic material from northern and central Namibia, this article provides insight into the views and experiences of primarily unemployed and poor men, and the dilemmas with which they are confronted due to lack of life opportunities. For these men, poverty and lack of agency may lead to loss of meaning and identity. The article brings men's experiences into context by exploring the socio-economic and historical transitions which in powerful ways contribute to shaping men's lives. It argues that HIV/AIDS is but one of many pressing concerns, and therefore information campaigns to promote safe sexual practices have limited meaning and impact. It further argues that men, like women, but in different ways than women, are vulnerable to HIV/AIDS. To counter this situation, it is crucial that HIV/AIDS prevention efforts work with men specifically. If prevention programmes are to have any relevance and impact, they should take their starting point in men's experiences of social exclusion and existential doubt. 相似文献

With a starting point in women's studies, this article moves on to approach the nightclub as a place of embodiment for both genders by introducing neo-Lacanian insights combined with Baudrillardian concepts. We look at three young drug-experienced men interviewed for a Danish club study (2008–09). The article examines how the risks of losing masculinity, losing sexual opportunities, and losing friends are managed in nightlife. Since masculinity becomes invested in the fantasy of the drug and the utopian party, these young men can be perceived as risking their male position when the party does not work out as planned. 相似文献

This paper presents a theoretical model derived from a grounded theory analysis of interviews with 19 men who had had a vasectomy three years previously. The aim was to track men's experience of vasectomy through decision making, surgery and adjustment and to develop a model to shed light on the process. Early studies of vasectomy had suggested that men adopt more stereotypically masculine behaviours after vasectomy and their authors had conjectured that these were compensatory for a diminished sense of masculinity. Interesting findings from the present study suggest that, for these participants at least, vasectomy often enhanced their sense of masculinity. Surgery was sometimes construed as a “bloodbath” heroically endured and part of the construction of a valued identity of a “family man”. Peer pressure, particularly in the workplace, appeared to be a powerful motivator when making the decision to be sterilized and the authors suggest that vasectomy can be a passport to membership of a socially valued group. 相似文献

Intimate partner violence (IPV) may increase as women in patriarchal societies become empowered, implicitly or explicitly challenging prevailing gender norms. Prior evidence suggests an inverse U-shaped relationship between women’s empowerment and IPV, in which violence against women first increases and then decreases as more egalitarian gender norms gradually gain acceptance. By means of focus-group discussions and in-depth interviews with men in 10 Bangladeshi villages, this study explored men’s evolving views of women, gender norms and the legitimacy of men’s perpetration of IPV in the context of a gender transition. It examines men’s often-contradictory narratives about women’s empowerment and concomitant changes in norms of masculinity, and identifies aspects of women’s empowerment that are most likely to provoke a male backlash. Findings suggest that men’s growing acceptance of egalitarian gender norms and their self-reported decreased engagement in IPV are driven largely by pragmatic self-interest: their desire to improve their economic status and fear of negative consequences of IPV. 相似文献
