BackgroundAllergic reactions to food additives are often suspected by families. The aim of this study was to describe oral food challenge (OFC) outcomes in a pediatric cohort with a suspected diagnosis of allergy to food additives (food dyes or sodium benzoate).MethodsAll patients who underwent an open OFC to carmine red, cochineal red, erythrosine, patent blue V, tartrazine, yellow sunset S, and/or sodium benzoate were included. A survey was sent to families after testing to evaluate whether the OFC results had altered feeding behaviors with food additives.ResultsTwenty-three patients were included. The main suspected food was candy (n = 11/23; 48%). Only one OFC out of 45 was formally positive for the carmine and cochineal red. Subsequently, most OFCs were negative (44/45; 97.8%). Despite the negativity of the challenge, four families out of 14 reported occurrences of supposed allergic reactions to food additives and six out of 15 continued to completely avoid the additive of concern in their children's diet.ConclusionsAllergies to food additives remain rare. Even if an IgE-mediated allergy was excluded with a negative OFC, families remained suspicious about ready-made products. Health professionals and parents should be reassured about the low risk of food dye intolerance or allergies. 相似文献

Background
Cochineal dye is used worldwide as a red coloring in foods, drinks, cosmetics, quasi-drugs, and drugs. The main component of the red color is carminic acid (CA). Carmine is an aluminum- or calcium-chelated product of CA. CA and carmine usually contain contaminating proteins, including a 38-kDa protein thought to be the primary allergen. Severe allergic reactions manifest as anaphylaxis. The aim of this study was to review all Japanese reported cases and propose useful diagnostic chart.Methods
All reported Japanese cases of cochineal dye-induced immediate allergy were reviewed, and newly registered cases were examined by skin prick test (SPT) with cochineal extract (CE) and measurement of CE and carmine-specific serum IgE test. Two-dimensional (2D) western blotting using patient serum was conducted to identify the antigen.Results
Twenty-two Japanese cases have been reported. SPT and the level of specific IgE test indicated that six cases should be newly registered as cochineal dye allergy. All cases were adult females, and all cases except three involved anaphylaxis; 13 cases involved past history of local symptoms associated with cosmetics use. Japanese strawberry juice and fish-meat sausage, and European processed foods (especially macarons made in France) and drinks were recent major sources of allergen. 2D western blotting showed that patient IgE reacted to the 38-kDa protein and other proteins. Serum from healthy controls also weakly reacted with these proteins.Conclusions
SPT with CE and determination of the level of CE and carmine-specific IgE test are useful methods for the diagnosis of cochineal dye allergy. 相似文献4.
目的:建立准确简便的用于非发酵性豆制品中柠檬黄、胭脂红和日落黄含量检测的高效液相色谱分析方法。方法:将样品粉碎均匀,加入乙醇+氨水+水(7+2+1)的提取液直接提取样品中的色素,采用反相高效液相色谱法,以甲醇-0.02 mol/L乙酸铵水溶液梯度洗脱,二极管阵列检测器检测。结果:柠檬黄、胭脂红、日落黄三种色素在浓度范围为0.1μg/ml~50μg/ml线性良好,样品加标回收率为84.1%~104.4%,方法相对标准偏差RSD<5%,方法最低定量限为柠檬黄0.15 mg/kg、胭脂红0.30 mg/kg、日落黄0.25 mg/kg。结论:该方法前处理简单、检测灵敏度高、重现性好。 相似文献
