Many health-related research studies among Seventh-day Adventists (SDA) were published since 1958. Californian and Norwegian studies have shown that SDA have lower coronary mortality rates than the general population. This finding is usually attributed to the lifestyle advocated by the Seventh-day Adventist church with greater physical activity, lower median BMI, abstention from use of alcohol and tobacco, food habits characterized by a large intake of fruits, vegetables, cereal fiber, unsaturated fatty acids and a low consumption of saturated fats. The results about cancer incidence were discussed. Californian studies have shown significantly decreased relative risk in SDA than in the general population. Japanese studies have also reported lower risk of cancers in men with lifestyles similar to those of SDA. By contrast the Norwegian study of SDA has shown that the risk of cancer seems to be similar to that of the general population. Some studies reported a greater prevalence of type 2 diabetes in the non vegetarian SDA than the vegetarian. Compared with vegetarian, non vegetarian SDA reported more medication use, more chronic diseases, more hospitalizations and surgeries. Lifestyle choices of SDA as above described could prevent a great many coronary artery disease and type 2 diabetes. This lifestyle is now emphasized by French PNNS.  相似文献

We developed a self-administered questionnaire for screening the most common adult-onset dystonias. It was tested in 90 first-degree relatives of 22 adult-onset dystonia patients, yielding 79% sensitivity and 94% specificity. Simulation of a case-finding procedure based on serial application of the questionnaire and clinical examination of both subjects screening positive and subjects screening negative who had < 8 years of schooling increased sensitivity to 95% and specificity to 100%. This questionnaire may be an important screening resource for familial aggregation studies to be used in the context of a complex case-finding procedure.  相似文献

Abstract Resilient adolescents are notable for their social competence, which enables them to form and maintain close relationships. The evidence is that adolescents' social competence is derived from their experience of close relationships within their family. On the basis of structured interviews, adolescents' working models of attachments can be categorized into secure, dismissive, or pre-occupied. These attachment styles are associated with very divergent beliefs about the self and others, with differing patterns of emotion regulation and with differing risk profiles for maladjustment. Parenting styles and family relationships appear to have considerable influence on attachment behaviour. Further evidence for the importance of the family comes from research on ego development. Family level behavioural patterns have been discerned from family research interviews which are associated with stagnation or advancement in ego development during adolescence. Though the results suggest causal connections, the direction of effects is far from clear. Longitudinal research underpins the importance of childhood temperament as a contributing factor to the quality of the family environment that the child and then adolescent experiences.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that alcoholics have smaller brain volumes than non-alcoholic cohorts, but an effect of family history (FH) of heavy drinking on brain volume has not been demonstrated. We examined the relationship between an FH of heavy drinking and both brain shrinkage as measured by the ratio of brain volumes to intracranial volume (ICV) as well as maximal brain growth as measured by ICV in early-onset and late-onset alcoholics. METHODS: With T1-weighted resonance imaging, we measured ICV, brain volume, and white and gray matter volume in adult treatment-seeking late-onset and early-onset alcoholics with either a positive or a negative FH of heavy alcohol use, and in healthy control subjects. We also calculated brain shrinkage using a ratio of soft tissue volumes to ICV. RESULTS: The FH positive alcoholic patients had significantly smaller ICVs than FH negative patients, suggesting smaller premorbid brain growth. Brain shrinkage did not correlate with FH. Late-onset alcoholics showed a greater difference in ICV between FH positive and FH negative patients than early-onset alcoholics. Late-onset FH positive patients also had significantly lower IQ scores than late-onset FH negative patients, and IQ scores were correlated with ICV. CONCLUSIONS: These data provide evidence that parental alcohol use might increase risk for alcoholism in offspring in part by a genetic and/or environmental effect that might be related to reduced brain growth.  相似文献

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), easily culture-expanded from bone marrow, can significantly enhance bone defect healing. Several proteins, such as the bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) and in particular BMP-7, are involved in bone formation in vitro and in vivo. In this preclinical study, we evaluated if the association of human MSC (hMSC) with BMP-7 had synergic action on bone healing. Rat femoral defects (n=12) were treated with: autoclaved bone and mononucleated cells (MNC) as control group G1; bone and hMSC, group G2; bone with BMP-7, group G3; bone and hMSC plus BMP-7, group G4. Defect regeneration was evaluated with plain radiographs after 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks and with histological analysis. We observed organized trabeculae bridging between the osteotomic ends of the host bone in rats treated with the association of hMSC and rhBMP-7. These trabeculae, formed by a core of devitalized tissue surrounded by osteoblasts, osteocytes and osteoclasts, were continuous with a cortical-like structure of bony tissue. Such new bone formation of the group treated with the association of hMSC and rhBMP-7 (G4) was clearly superior compared to rats treated with rhBMP-7 (G2) or hMSC (G3) alone, as shown by radiographic analysis and histological study. The present study suggests that the association of hMSC and BMP-7 is more effective than hMSC or BMP-7 alone in the healing of femoral defects in rats. Further studies with larger samples are required to confirm these results and to evaluate the best dosage.  相似文献

Objective   This study evaluated the Impact on Sibling scale, a six-item measure of parents' perception of the effects of a child's illness on healthy siblings.
Methods   Participants were 122 parents of a child with chronic illness, developmental disability, or autism spectrum disorder, and a well sibling aged 4–13 years. Parents completed the Impact on Sibling scale and the Child Behavior Checklist about the sibling, and completed the revised Impact on Family scale and the Brief Symptom Inventory about themselves.
Results   The Impact on Sibling score was correlated with measures of sibling, parent and family functioning. The internal consistency of the Impact on Sibling scale was higher for families with children with chronic illness compared with the other two diagnostic groups.
Conclusion   The Impact on Sibling scale is a brief set of items that can help identify siblings who are negatively affected by a brother/sister's illness. Findings support further research on the Impact on Sibling scale, particularly with families of children with chronic illnesses.  相似文献

Against the theoretical background of the effort–recovery model and the action regulation theory, the author presents a cross‐sectional questionnaire study testing hypotheses about the relationship between work‐related time pressure, cognitive and emotional irritation, work–family conflict and psychosomatic complaints. Subjects were 576 female home care nurses. Results of a path analysis show that the relation of time pressure and psychosomatic complaints is partially mediated by experiencing a work–family conflict; also the relation of time pressure and work–family conflict is partially mediated by cognitive and emotional irritation. It is argued that cognitive and emotional irritation are fruitful concepts for a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between work stressors and the development of strain‐based work–family conflict. Prolongation of the action potential duration of dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons by low (nM) concentrations of opioids occurs through activation of excitatory opioid receptors that are positively coupled via Gs regulatory protein to adenylate cyclase. Previous results suggested GM1 ganglioside to have an essential role in regulating this excitatory response, but not the inhibitory (APD-shortening) response to higher (μM) opioid concentrations. Furthermore, it was proposed that synthesis of GM1 is upregulated by prolonged activation of excitatory opioid receptor functions. To explore this possibility we have utilized cultures of hybrid F11 cells to carry out closely correlated electrophysiological and biochemical analyses of the effects of chronic opioid treatment on a homogeneous population of clonal cells which express many functions characteristic of DRG neurons. We show that chronic opioid exposure of F11 cells does, in fact, result in elevated levels of GM1 as well as cyclic adenosine monophosphate (AMP), concomitant with the onset of opioid excitatory supersensitivity as manifested by naloxone-evoked decreases in voltage-dependent membrane K+ currents. Such elevation of GM1 would be expected to enhance the efficacy of excitatory opioid receptor activation of the Gs/adenylate cyclase/cyclic AMP system, thereby providing a positive feedback mechanism that may account for the remarkable supersensitivity of chronic opioid-treated neurons to the excitatory effects of opioid agonists as well as antagonists. These in vitro findings may provide novel insights into the mechanisms underlying naloxone-precipitated withdrawal syndromes and opioid-induced hyperalgesia after chronic opiatf addiction in vivo. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献
