Bovine papillomaviruses have a major contribution to make in unravelling the mechanisms of oncogenesis by this group. Most papillomaviruses can exert their biologic effect only in vivo, but several of the bovine types transform fibroblasts in culture; the altered cells have measurable attributes such as anchorage independence, density inhibition, and tumorigenicity in nude mice. Another important feature is that subgenomic fractions of DNA can be transfected into cells and elicit transformation. It is, therefore, possible to undertake quantitative molecular biologic and genetic studies in a way which is impossible with most papillomaviruses. Large amounts of virus can be obtained from bovine tumors. The six currently characterized viruses have all been cloned by recombinant techniques, and are the subject of intensive comparative research in many laboratories. 相似文献

Qualitative amniotic fluid volume determination is a routine part of fetal biophysical profile score testing. The relationship between polyhydramnios and poor perinatal outcome has been previously documented. We have undertaken a retrospective chart review which relates qualitative amniotic fluid volume as determined at the time of last biophysical profile score assessment to perinatal outcome in 7562 referred high-risk obstetric patients. Gross and corrected perinatal mortality in association with normal qualitative amniotic fluid volume ranged from 4.65/1000 and 1.97/1000, respectively, to 32.9/1000 and 4.12/1000 in association with increased qualitative amniotic fluid volume, respectively. The incidences of major congenital anomaly and fetal macrosomia were significantly related to qualitative amniotic fluid volume. 相似文献

Purpose
To assess malpractice claims related to the management of dizziness in otolaryngology in order to improve care and minimize the risk of litigation.Materials and methods
This is a retrospective review of the LexisNexis “Jury Verdicts and Settlements” database. All lawsuits and out of court adjudications related to the management of dizziness by otolaryngologists were collected. Data including patient demographics, plaintiff allegation, procedure performed, and indemnities were analyzed.Results
Of 21 cases meeting inclusion criteria, 17 were decided by a trial jury and four were resolved out of court. Jury verdicts favored the plaintiff 53% of the time and a payout was made in 57% of cases overall. Average payments were higher for jury verdicts in favor of the plaintiff ($1.8 million) as compared to out of court settlements ($545,000). Two-thirds of cases involved surgery, most commonly stapes surgery. Legal allegations, including physical injury, negligence, and lack of informed consent failed to predict the legal outcome.Conclusions
Appropriate examination, testing, and referrals within a timely manner are crucial in the management of dizzy patients to avoid misdiagnoses. It is imperative that patients undergoing ear surgery are appropriately counseled that dizziness is a potential complication. The analysis of malpractice literature is complementary to clinical studies, with the potential to educate practitioners, improve patient care, and mitigate risk. 相似文献4.

Objective
Tongue Retaining Devices (TRD) anteriorly displace the tongue with suction forces while patients sleep. TRD provide a non-surgical treatment option for patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Our objective was to conduct a systematic review of the international literature for TRD outcomes as treatment for OSA.Methods
Three authors independently and systematically searched four databases (including PubMed/MEDLINE) through June 26, 2016. We followed guidelines set within the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA).Results
Sixteen studies with 242 patients met criteria. The overall means ± standard deviations (M ± SD) for apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) decreased from 33.6 ± 21.1/h to 15.8 ± 16.0/h (53% reduction). Seven studies (81 patients) reported lowest oxygen saturation (LSAT), which improved from 79.8 ± 17.5% to 83.9 ± 8.6%. Four studies (93 patients) reported Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS), which decreased from 10.8 ± 4.8 to 8.2 ± 4.5, p < 0.0001. Four studies (31 patients) reported Oxygen Desaturation Index (ODI) which decreased from 29.6 ± 32.1 to 12.9 ± 8.7, a 56.4% reduction.Conclusion
Current international literature demonstrates that tongue retaining devices reduce apnea-hypopnea index by 53%, increase lowest oxygen saturation by 4.1 oxygen saturation points, decrease oxygen desaturation index by 56% and decrease Epworth sleepiness scale scores by 2.8 points. Tongue retaining devices provide a statistically effective alternative treatment option for obstructive sleep apnea. 相似文献5.

Measurements of substrate uptake by the sheep hind limb show a pattern similar to human and other monogastric animals. Thus free fatty acids (FFA) are the principal substrates at rest and during exercise while beta-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate are major nutrients in starved animals. The hind limb has arteriovenous differences for glucose and lactate which indicate that glucose supplies about 27% of the fuel of respiration during exercise, but the hind limb in resting, fed, and starved animals returns essentially all of the glucose carbon to the blood in the form of lactate. This finding is consistent with a conservation of glucose in aminals which obtain very little dietary glucose. Although some acetate is extracted from the blood in fed sheep, the utilization of this nutrient can account for only 2% or less of the oxygen uptake in the hind limb of starved or exercising animals. Thus, while acetate is the major product of the sheep rumen it is not used directly as a major energy source. We propose that most of the actate is converted to FFA which can be stored as triglyceride or oxidized in muscle. 相似文献

Leukopenia, with a mean white blood cell count of 2,680/mm3, was observed in nine patients with thermal injury early in the course of topical treatment with silver sulfadiazine. All manifested absolute neutropenia with a concomitant increase in immature band forms in the peripheral blood smear. The leukocyte counts returned to within normal limits within 48 to 72 hours of discontinuation of silver sulfadiazine therapy in four patients, and also did so in five patients in whom silver sulfadiazine therapy was continued. Leukopenia secondary to silver sulfadiazine application is currently believed to be an innocuous, self-limited phenomenon. 相似文献
