ABSTRACT

Objectives: The present study investigated the relationships of enculturation and depressive symptoms with health risk behavior engagement in Mexican-American college students and examined how these relationships differed by gender. Previous research has noted consistent gender differences in health risk behavior (e.g. alcohol use, substance use, and risky sexual behavior) among Latina/os, and emphasized the role of U.S. acculturation in this difference. Research examining the role of heritage cultural retention (i.e. enculturation), and including the added influence of mental health variables, such as depressive symptoms, is currently lacking. This study sought to address this gap.

Design: A large sample (N?=?677) of Mexican-American college students from four universities (located in New York, California, Florida, and Texas) completed an online questionnaire assessing health risk behaviors and corresponding variables.

Results: We found that males who endorsed more behavioral enculturation and depressive symptoms were more likely to engage in health risk behavior than all others in the sample. Contrary to previous literature, no relationship was found between behavioral enculturation and health risk behavior in females.

Conclusion: The current study found behavioral enculturation to be associated with depressive symptoms, and in turn with health risk behaviors among the males in our sample. Additional research will be needed to identify the mechanism underlying the relationship between enculturation and depressive symptoms as well as between depressive symptoms and risky behavior.  相似文献

Abstract

The occupational hazards and respiratory symptoms of domestic cleaners in USA are largely unknown. We conducted a cross-sectional study among 56 Hispanic female domestic cleaner on their health status and frequency of cleaning products used and tasks performed. While women used multi-use products (60.0%) and toilet bowl cleaners (51.8%) most days of the week, many (39.3%) reported not using personal protective equipment while cleaning. Itchy/watery eyes (61.8%) and itchy nose (56.4%) were the most frequently reported symptoms. A history of physician-diagnosed asthma was reported by 14.3% while 33.9% had symptoms of bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR). In conclusion, this vulnerable population has high prevalence of physician-diagnosis asthma and BHR symptoms and is potentially exposed to myriad occupational hazards. Further research exploring associations between products use, cleaning tasks and respiratory symptoms is warranted.  相似文献

Abstract: The current study examined the extent to which mothers, fathers, teachers, and teenage friends influenced Latino adolescents’ academic motivation. Using path analysis, separate models were tested for 154 Latino boys and 156 Latina girls. Findings indicated that mothers’ and teachers’ academic support were positively related to adolescent girls’ academic motivation, and fathers’ and teachers’ academic support were positively related to adolescent boys’ academic motivation. The salience of teachers’ support, possible reasons for gender differences, and implications for future research are discussed.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine patient recall and comprehension after laparoscopic appendectomy in an underserved population. Laparoscopic surgery can lead to diagnostic uncertainty secondary to poor recall and variable port placement. METHODS: After institutional review board approval, we identified a cohort of patients who underwent laparoscopic appendectomy from 2000 to 2004 at a single institution. We then attempted to contact the patients to conduct a 10-question telephone survey, which determined whether the patient spoke English or Spanish as a primary language, ethnicity, educational level, and questions about recall of perioperative events and diagnoses. If we could not reach the patient, we tried to call back on 2 different occasions. RESULTS: Between 2000 and 2004, 186 patients underwent laparoscopic appendectomy. Of these, 65% were Hispanic. We found that only 17% of these patients returned for a postoperative visit. Only 19.3% could be contacted by phone. Forty-seven percent of the patients contacted by phone spoke Spanish exclusively. Overall 92% of patients contacted knew what operation they had, and gave their correct diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: The low percentage of patients available to follow-up makes this study statistically insignificant. However, we believe that fact in itself is important. In Southwestern states, we see a large migrant population. This highlights the need to communicate effectively with the patients at the time of surgery, which we speculate we did based on the percentage of patients that knew their diagnosis.  相似文献

Hispanics are a growing ethnic minority in the United States and one at significant risk for heart failure. Health-related quality of life (HRQL) is poor in individuals with heart failure, especially during and immediately following hospitalization. No prior research into the HRQL of Hispanics with heart failure was located. A sample of 80 individuals with heart failure, evenly divided by primary language and matched on functional status using the New York Heart Association classification system and age, was studied for 6 months following hospital discharge. Data on HRQL were collected using Spanish and English versions of the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire. Scores improved over time in both groups but significantly more so in the Hispanics when compared to the non-Hispanics. Group differences in HRQL could not be explained by demographics, clinical characteristics, treatment received, perceived support, or instrument response characteristics. Further exploration of this naturally occurring phenomenon may provide insight into how HRQL can be improved in the general heart failure population.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence and correlates of self-reported urogenital symptoms (dryness, irritation or itching, discharge, dysuria) among postmenopausal women aged 50-79. DESIGN: A cross-sectional analysis based on n=98,705 women enrolled in the US-based Women's Health Initiative observational study and clinical trials. Urogenital symptoms, symptom severity (mild, moderate, severe), and all covariates were self-reported through questionnaires at enrollment. Prevalence rates of each urogenital symptom were examined and logistic regression was used to identify potential correlates. RESULTS: Prevalence rates for each symptom were: dryness, 27.0%; irritation or itching, 18.6%; discharge, 11.1%; and dysuria, 5.2%. Four factors were correlated with two or more symptoms: Hispanic ethnicity (adjusted odds ratio (AOR)=2.1-3.1 versus white women across all symptoms), obesity (AOR=2.2 severe discharge versus none, AOR=3.6 severe irritation/itching versus none), treated diabetes (pills or shots) compared to no diabetes (AOR=2.4 severe dysuria versus none, AOR=3.2 severe irritation/itching versus none), and vaginal cream HRT/ERT compared to those who never used HRT/ERT (AOR=4.4 severe dryness versus none, AOR=4.6 severe irritation/itching versus none). Factors not associated with the symptoms included sexual activity, age, years since menopause, current smoking, marital status, gravidity, and natural versus surgical menopause. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report to document urogenital symptoms by race/ethnicity among an exclusively postmenopausal population. We found an elevated prevalence of urogenital symptoms among women who are Hispanic, obese, and/or diabetic. Confirmation of our findings in these subgroups, and, if confirmed, analysis on why these populations are at greater risk, are areas for future research.  相似文献

Relative to other racial/ethnic groups in the United States, Hispanic American (HA) youth have higher rates of overweight and obesity. Previous work suggests that low perceived social status (SS) promotes excess caloric intake and, thereby, development of obesity. Psychological resilience may play a role in reducing adverse eating behaviors and risk for obesity. The objective of this study was to investigate whether resilience (as measured by the Connor Davidson Resilience Scale) interacts with experimentally manipulated SS to affect dietary intake among HA adolescents (n = 132). Using a rigged game of Monopoly (Hasbro, Inc.), participants were randomized to a high or low SS condition. Following the Monopoly game, participants consumed an ad libitum lunch and their dietary intake was assessed. There was a significant interaction between resilience and experimentally manipulated SS for total energy intake (p = 0.006), percent energy needs consumed (p = 0.005), and sugar intake (p = 0.004). For the high SS condition, for each increase in resilience score, total energy intake decreased by 7.165 ± 2.866 kcal (p = 0.014) and percent energy needs consumed decreased by 0.394 ± 0.153 (p = 0.011). In the low SS condition, sugar intake increased by 0.621 ± 0.240 g for each increase in resilience score (p = 0.011). After correction for multiple comparisons, the aforementioned interactions, but not simple slopes, were statistically significant.  相似文献
