Handcycling is a mode of mobility, and sport format within Para‐cycling, for those with a lower limb impairment. The exercise modality has been researched extensively in the rehabilitation setting. However, there is an emerging body of evidence detailing the physiological responses to handcycling in the competitive sport domain. Competitive handcyclists utilize equipment that is vastly disparate to that used for rehabilitation or recreation. Furthermore, the transferability of findings from early handcycling research to current international athletes regarding physiological profiles is severely limited. This narrative review aims to map the landscape within handcycling research and document the growing interest at the elite end of the exercise spectrum. From 58 experimental/case studies and four doctoral theses, we provide accounts of the aerobic capacity of handcyclists and the influence training status plays; present research regarding the physiological responses to handcycling performance, including tests of sprint performance; and discuss the finite information on handcyclists’ training habits and efficacy of bespoke interventions. Furthermore, given the wide variety of protocols employed and participants recruited previously, we present considerations for the interpretation of existing research and recommendations for future work, all with a focus on competitive sport. The majority of studies (n = 21) reported aerobic capacity, detailing peak rates of oxygen uptake and power output, with values >3.0 L min?1 and 240 W shown in trained, male H3‐H4 classification athletes. Knowledge, though, is lacking for other classifications and female athletes. Similarly, little research is available concerning sprint performance with only one from eight studies recruiting athletes with an impairment.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo determine whether coating prosthesis liners with a 5% aluminium zirconium tetrachlorohydrate antiperspirant solution (AZCH) reduces local sweating on the thigh.DesignDouble-blinded counter-balanced crossover designMethodsFourteen able-bodied participants (age: 28 ± 5 y; body mass: 73.9 ± 7.9 kg, height: 1.73 ± 0.09 m; peak oxygen consumption [VO2peak]: 50.7 ± 9.1 mlO2 kg−1 min−1) simultaneously wore a prosthesis liner on each leg, one treated with AZCH and one untreated, for four days prior to running at 50% of VO2peak for 60 min in a temperate (23.7 ± 0.7 °C and 42.2 ± 2.6% relative humidity) or hot (34.0 ± 1.6 °C and 40.8 ± 6.1% relative humidity) environment. Rectal temperature (Tre) and whole-body sweat rates (WBSR) were measured to characterize thermal strain. Local sweat rate (LSR) was measured bilaterally underneath the liners, continuously, and heat-activated-sweat gland density (HASGD) was measured bilaterally every 15 min.ResultsIn temperate condition, the mean change in Tre was 1.2±0.4 °C and WBSR was 723 ± 129 g⋅ h−1, whereas in the hot condition, change in Tre was 1.2±0.5 °C and WBSR was 911 ± 231 g⋅ h−1. In the temperate condition, AZCH treatment did not alter LSR (treated: 0.50±0.17 mg·cm–2 min–1, untreated: 0.50±0.17 mg·cm–2 min–1; P = 0.87) or HASGD (treated: 54±14 glands·cm–2, untreated 55±14 glands·cm–2; P = 0.38). In the hot condition, AZCH treatment paradoxically increased LSR (treated: 0.88 ± 0.38 mg·cm–2 min–1, untreated: 0.74 ± 0.28 mg·cm–2 min–1; P = 0.04) but not HASGD (treated: 52 ± 17 glands·cm–2, untreated: 48 ± 19 glands·cm–2; P = 0.77).ConclusionThese results indicate coating prosthesis liners with 5% AZCH is ineffective at reducing local sweating.  相似文献

Several international sports federations have implemented a standardized injury reporting system during their championships. However, very few studies have investigated athletes with disabilities during major championships apart from the Paralympic Games. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the rate and characteristics of injuries during the Wheelchair Basketball World Championships 2018 (WBWC). This prospective cohort study was conducted during the WBWC held in Hamburg, Germany, from August 16 to August 26, 2018. Physicians or physiotherapists of all 28 participating teams (total 336 players) were asked to report all newly incurred injuries (with location, diagnosis, cause, and estimated duration of absence) daily on a standardized injury report form. Prevalence and incidence rates were calculated. Medical staff of 11 teams (132 players) reported 100 injuries, equivalent to 75.8 per 100 players (95% CI: 60.9-90.7) or 68.9 per 1000 player-days (55.4-82.4). Eight time-loss injuries were reported (6.1 injuries per 100 players [95% CI: 1.9-10.3] or 5.5 injuries per 1000 player-days [1.7-9.3]). More injuries were incurred during matches (n = 68) than during training. Most injuries affected the neck/cervical spine (16%), thoracic spine/upper back (15%), and shoulder (14%). The most frequent diagnosis was muscle spasms (25%), the most frequent cause was overuse (52%). A high rate of non–time-loss injuries compared to Paralympic Games was reported. Future studies should focus on the etiology of muscle spasms and further identify injury mechanisms of traumatic and overuse injuries in wheelchair basketball players to develop adequate preventive measures.  相似文献

The effects of caffeine were investigated in judo, boxing, taekwondo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. However, this substance was never investigated regarding traditional jiu-jitsu. Therefore, the aim of this research was to analyze the effects of caffeine in the Special Judo Fitness Test (SJFT) and technical variables during combat in traditional jiu-jitsu elite athletes. Methods: Twenty-two young professionals of traditional jiu-jitsu, 11 men and 11 women (age = 22 ± 4 (18–33) years, body mass = 66.6 ± 10.8 (46.2–86.1) kg, height = 1.70 ± 0.9 (1.55–1.85) m) with 15 ± 7 years of experience in traditional jiu-jitsu, participated in a double-blind, counterbalanced, crossover study. In two different conditions, the traditional jiu-jitsu athletes ingested 3 mg/kg body mass of caffeine or a placebo. After 60 min, they performed the SJFT test to measure throwing performance, and subsequently, combat to analyze offensive and defensive hitting techniques. Results: Caffeine had a main effect on the number of throws during the SJFT test (P < 0.01). In addition, it was effective in sets 2 (13 ± 2 vs. 14 ± 2; p = 0.01) and 3 (12 ± 2 vs. 13 ± 1; p = 0.03). There was also a main effect during the test on heart rate when caffeine was ingested (F = 12.48, p < 0.01). The effects of caffeine were similar compared to the placebo condition regarding performance during combat both in offensive and defensive fighting variables Conclusions: the pre-exercise ingestion of 3 mg/kg body mass of caffeine increased performance in the SJFT test, decreased fatigue perception, and increased power and endurance perception in professionally traditional jiu-jitsu athletes. However, it did not seem to improve offensive and defensive technical actions during combat.  相似文献

Background Appropriate planning and staffing for medical services at large-scale athletic events is essential to provide for a safe and successful competition. There are few well-documented accounts describing the demand for such services.The present study provided the data from the Beijing 2008 Olympics and Paralympics,with a view to provide the guidance for planning future events.Methods A total of 22 029 and 8046 patients,who received medical care from a physician at an Olympic or Paralympic medical station,were included. The patient proportion among different personnel,various disease proportions at different kinds of venues,and the disease spectrum at specified venues at the Olympics and Paralympics were analyzed.Results At both games,the patient proportion varied by accreditation status. The staff accounted for the largest number of visits at the Olympics (44.83%) and Paralympics (36.95%),with respiratory diseases the most common. Various disease spectrums were discovered at the different kinds of venues. Surgical diseases were the most frequently listed reason for visits,both at competition and non-competition venues,especially during the Paralympics. The sport-related injuries accounted for a majority of the surgical cases during both games. At training venues,ear nose and throat diseases accounted for the greatest number of visits during both games.Conclusions During both games,people contracted different diseases at different venues. Adequate surgeons should be designated to offer assistance mostly in trauma situations. Appropriate numbers of physicians in respiratory diseases and otorhinolaryngology is of great importance.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of weight reduction on the anti-mutagenicity of human saliva. Subjects were 16 male college judo players. The anti-mutagenicity of the saliva was measured using the umu test. There was an inhibiting effect of the saliva on the mutagenicity of AF-2. However, a modifying effect of the saliva on Trp-P-1 was not observed. On the day before a competition and 7 days after the competition, the inhibiting capacity of the saliva for the mutagenicity of AF-2 decreased and increased in two non-weight reduction and two weight reduction groups, respectively. However, on the day before the competition, the changed body weights (r=−0.77, p<0.01) and BMI (r=−0.77, p<0.01) were significantly correlated with that of the inhibiting capacity of the saliva for the mutagenicity of AF-2. In addition, the BMI at 20 days before the competition was not significantly but markedly correlated with it (r=0.50, p=0.057). At 7 days after the competition, however, these correlations were not found. These findings suggest a unique correlation between the anti-mutagenicity of human saliva and body weight or BMI.  相似文献

The current study aimed to exhibit effects of judo training for at least 2 yr on bone mass parameters in growing boys. Our population was composed of one hundred and thirty boys in tanner stage 1 and aged 10.52 ± 0.86 yr. Eleven judo players were therefore, excluded from the study because they do not have participate regularly to the judo training sessions during the last 2 yr. The resting sample was divided into two groups: 50 judo players (JU group) and 69 controls (C group). Bone mineral density (BMD), bone mineral content (BMC), and bone area (BA) were evaluated by using dual-photon X-ray absorptiometry on weight-bearing sites: the whole body, lumbar spine (L2-L4), legs, femoral necks and hips and on the non-weight bearing sites: arms and radiuses. Our findings displayed that judo participation was markedly associated with greater values of bone mass parameters in young judo players than control group. Accordingly, the BMD and BA results exhibited significant differences in the whole body, legs, dominant total hip, arms and both whole radiuses in addition to the dominant femoral neck, the non-dominant total hip and except the non-dominant whole radius for the BMC parameter. Additionally, data of the subject within t test has shown significant differences of bone mass parameters only in the non weight-bearing sites in the judo players without any obvious variation in the controls. Differences of BMD observed on the dominant arm and whole radius in addition to the increased BMC values showed in the dominant whole radius compared with their contra-lateral sites in judo players without any marked variation of BA parameters in all sites in both groups. In growing boys, judo practice was obviously associated with osteogenic effects in specific sites.  相似文献
