Oral contraceptive administration,interfemale relationships,and sexual behavior inMacaca fascicularis

The effects of oral contraceptive administration on the social relationships of adult female cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) were examined. Ten females were administered ethinyl estradiol/ethynodiol diacetate (Demulen), 10 were administered ethinyl estradiol/norgestrel (Ovral), and 10 served as a control group. The monkeys lived in social groups of 5 females each, and patterns of social interaction and social status were recorded. Interfemale relationships were also observed when a vasectomized male was placed in each social group for 50 min, once/week. During the latter observations, preliminary data on the effects of oral contraceptive treatment on sexual interaction were also collected. In the absence of the male, interfemale agonistic interactions and time spent alone were influenced by social status but not by oral contraceptive treatment. Time spent in passive body contact, an affiliative state, was reduced by Ovral treatment. In the presence of the male, dominant females aggressively interfered with the sexual interactions of subordinates. This aggression resulted in the termination of a greater proportion of the sexual interactions of subordinates than dominants in the control group only, indicating suppression of this type of interaction by oral contraceptive treatment. Other effects included a decreased frequency of ejaculation with Ovral-treated females. These results suggest that oral contraceptives may suppress certain types of female agonistic behavior (e.g., in the context of mate competition) and some oral contraceptives may interfere with sexual activity. More broadly, these findings indicate that intrasexual competition for access to mates may occur in females as well as males. Revisiting the Relationship between Managed Care and Hospital Consolidation

Objective. This paper analyzes whether the rise in managed care during the 1990s caused the increase in hospital concentration.
Data Sources. We assemble data from the American Hospital Association, InterStudy and government censuses from 1990 to 2000.
Study Design. We employ linear regression analyses on long differenced data to estimate the impact of managed care penetration on hospital consolidation. Instrumental variable analogs of these regressions are also analyzed to control for potential endogeneity.
Data Collection. All data are from secondary sources merged at the level of the Health Care Services Area.
Principle Findings. In 1990, the mean population-weighted hospital Herfindahl–Hirschman index (HHI) in a Health Services Area was .19. By 2000, the HHI had risen to .26. Most of this increase in hospital concentration is due to hospital consolidation. Over the same time frame HMO penetration increased three fold. However, our regression analysis strongly implies that the rise of managed care did not cause the hospital consolidation wave. This finding is robust to a number of different specifications.     

Competitive dissociation of encephalitogenic complexes between antigen presenting cells and myelin basic protein

Splenic T cells from myelin basic protein (MBP)-immunised Lewis rats were activated to transfer experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) by co-culture with MBP-pulsed lymphoid dendritic cells (DC). MBP-pulsed DC could be kept for at least 24 h at 37 degrees C in antigen-free medium without affecting their ability subsequently to activate encephalitogenic T cells. However, MBP-pulsed DC were rendered much less stimulatory after a 6 h, but not 2 h, secondary incubation with ovalbumin. Thus, although encephalitogenic complexes between MBP and DC appear very stable in the absence of competing antigens, in their presence, antigen exchange can take place over a period of a few hours; this has positive implications for therapy of EAE by antigen competition.     

人血液酪氨酸蛋白激酶的研究——(Ⅲ)1—异丙基—6—氨基—噻吩骈[3,4—d]嘧啶—2,4—二酮对人淋巴细胞膜TPK活性的抑制作用

文报道了人工合成的1—异丙基—6—氨基—噻吩骈〔3,4—d〕嘧啶—2,4—二酮对人淋巴细胞膜TPK活性的抑制作用,IC_(50)约为300μmol/L。动力学实验结果表明,该化合物对TPK的抑制作用与ATP呈竞争性,而与多肽底物Poly(Glu—Ala—Tyr)_(6;3:1)呈非竞争性。放射自显影结果进一步证实了该化合物对TPK的抑制作用。

Direct observation of sexual competition inDrosophila melanogaster: The mutantWhite in competition with other genotypes

When two types ofDrosophila are in competition, the frequency dependence of mating success routinely is measured in our laboratory by direct observation of mating pairs in Elens-Wattiaux observation chambers. The present experiments concern white mutants (used here as a reference standard) in competition with three other genotypes: wild-type Canton S, giantgt w ^a , and giantgt ^13z /w ⁺ Y/C(1)Dx, y f. From the present observations, the frequency dependence of mating success seems a very common phenomenon: a rare-type sexual advantage exists for females and for males. Sexual activity of male and femalewhite mutants is significantly higher when food is present in the mating chamber. Males of the other strains also are more active in the presence of food. Homogamic matings are more frequent amonggt ^13z /w ⁺ Y/C(1)Dx, y f flies.     

Intraspecific density-dependent effects on growth and fecundity of <Emphasis Type="Italic">Diplosentis nudus</Emphasis> (Harada, 1938) Pichelin et Cribb, 2001 (Acanthocephala,Cavisomidae)

During June and July of 2007, a total of 130 specimens of the fish Rastrelliger kanagurta Cuvier (Teleostei, Scombridae), ranging between 19–31 cm in total length, were caught in the Red Sea off the coast of Sharm El-Sheikh, South Sinai, Egypt, and examined for infections by acanthocephalans (65 fish/month). Of this number, 29 (22.30%) were slightly or heavily parasitized by the acanthocephalan Diplosentis nudus (Harada, 1938) Pichelin et Cribb, 2001 (Cavisomidae); no other helminth parasites were found in the intestine of R. kanagurta. Twenty-nine infrapopulations of D. nudus, ranging from 23–218 individuals were collected from the infected fishes. These infrapopulations were distributed in a well-defined fundamental niche along the intestine of R. kanagurta, where the distribution of male worms was not random with respect to female worms size and position and suggests that the male-male competition for access to female may be intense and may select for large males. No correlation between fish size and infrapopulation size was observed. Correlations between female-to-male sex ratio and infrapopulation size, numbers of females and their mean lengths, numbers of males and their mean lengths, mean female length and mean male length within infrapopulation were very strong, and clearly suggest that as the infrapopulation size increased, the number of females and their mean lengths decreased and the number of males and their mean lengths increased. Combination of these results strongly suggests density-dependent effects and competition between male worms. The relationship between the mean female length or size and the number of eggs within its pseudocoel was strongly positive; egg production by female worm significantly decreases as the infrapopulation size increases, suggesting density-dependent reduction in female worm fecundity. Tendency for the variability in male testes size was not significant in infrapopulations of D. nudus. All of these results are discussed.
