Resolution of choreic movements associated with HIV encephalitis with anti-retroviral therapy

INTRODUCTION: Infection of the central nervous system with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) can be associated with movement disorders. CASE REPORT: A case of chorea during HIV encephalitis which responded well to antiretroviral therapy is reported. Choreic movements disappeared with a decrease of MRI lesions observed in basal ganglia. CONCLUSION: The efficacy of anti-retroviral therapy in choreic movements, a rare syndrome with HIV encephalitis, can be underlined.     

Détermination dynamique de la position d'équilibre d'une articulation

Résumé La détermination de la position d'équilibre de l'articulation du coude a été réalisée dans des conditions dynamiques et sous contrôle électromyographique. La détection des EMG permet de s'assurer que les muscles croisant l'articulation sont inactifs.L'angle correspondant à la position d'équilibre est proche de 75 degrés, comptés à partir de l'extension complète du coude.La détermination dynamique de cet équilibre offre la possibilité d'attribuer à chaque muscle une longueur standard qui est mesurable et comparable d'une préparation à une autre.     

Intracellular movements of Rickettsia conorii adn R. typhi based on actin polymerization

Human vascular endothelial, Vero and human embryonic lung cells infected with rickettsiae for 24 h or 48 h were labelled for polymerized actin with NBD-phallacidin. Between 20 and 68% of the intracellular Rickettsia conorii had an actin tail of between 0.33 and 15 microns, with the longest tails being observed in Vero cells. In the case of R. typhi less than 1% of the organisms had actin tails and these were considerably shorter than those of R. conorii. These findings provide new information concerning the different cytopathic effects observed with the two rickettsial species.
