Background & Aims: Impaired message-structure mapping results in deficits in both sentence production and comprehension in aphasia. Structural priming has been shown to facilitate syntactic production for persons with aphasia (PWA). However, it remains unknown if structural priming is also effective in sentence comprehension. We examined if PWA show preserved and lasting structural priming effects during interpretation of syntactically ambiguous sentences and if the priming effects occur independently of or in conjunction with lexical (verb) information.
Methods & Procedures: Eighteen PWA and 20 healthy older adults (HOA) completed a written sentence-picture matching task involving the interpretation of prepositional phrases (PP; the chef is poking the solider with an umbrella) that were ambiguous between high (verb modifier) and low attachment (object noun modifier). Only one interpretation was possible for prime sentences, while both interpretations were possible for target sentences. In Experiment 1, the target was presented immediately after the prime (0-lag). In Experiment 2, two filler items intervened between the prime and the target (2-lag). Within each experiment, the verb was repeated for half of the prime-target pairs, while different verbs were used for the other half. Participants’ off-line picture matching choices and response times were measured.
Results: After reading a prime sentence with a particular interpretation, HOA and PWA tended to interpret an ambiguous PP in a target sentence in the same way and with faster response times. Importantly, both groups continued to show this priming effect over a lag (Experiment 2), although the effect was not as reliable in response times. However, neither group showed lexical (verb-specific) boost on priming, deviating from robust lexical boost seen in the young adults of prior studies.
Conclusions: PWA demonstrate abstract (lexically-independent) structural priming in the absence of a lexically-specific boost. Abstract priming is preserved in aphasia, effectively facilitating not only immediate but also longer-lasting structure-message mapping during sentence comprehension. 相似文献
A retrospective review was done of 69 children and adolescents (7-17 years old) who underwent 75 arthroscopies of the knee during a 5-year period. Girls were overrepresented (71%). Thirty-eight were children under the age of 16. Of 46 injuries, 34 (74%) happened during sports. Children and adolescents were divided into two age groups based on their presumed state of skeletal maturity (boys 9–15 and girls 7–14 in group I and boys 16–17 and girls 15–17 in group II); meniscal lesions were equally common in the two groups, whereas anterior cruciate ligament tears were more common in older children (NS). Eleven of 17 (65%) anterior cruciate ligament lesions were combined with other intra-articular pathology, most often meniscal tears (9/11). As in other studies, half of the prearthroscopic diagnoses were incorrect. A high frequency of incorrect prearthroscopic diagnoses and of combined lesions justifies arthroscopy as an important diagnostic tool in children and adolescents with a history of twisting knee injury or chronic nonspecific knee problems. Girls practising ball games seem to be especially prone to knee injuries leading to arthroscopy. 相似文献
BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of laser refractive surgery on the offensive performance of professional baseball players. METHODS: Extensive search of the public media was conducted to determine which major league baseball players had undergone laser refractive surgery and when the procedure was performed. Baseball performance data were then used to determine presurgery and postsurgery baseball performance averages. A total of 17 position players were identified; however, 5 of these players were not considered in the analysis owing to insufficient playing experience either before or after the laser procedure. RESULTS: No statistically significant or practically significant difference was found between the presurgery and postsurgery means on either on-base percentage (P = 0.31), batting average (P = 0.39), slugging percentage (P = 0.66) or on-base plus slugging (OPS; P = 0.997) of major league baseball players. CONCLUSIONS: These preliminary findings suggest that professional baseball players should not expect a laser refractive surgical procedure to significantly improve their offensive baseball performance, despite the elimination of glasses or contact lens wear. 相似文献
Summary Man is distinguished and differentiated from other living creatures by possessing less genetically determined characteristics, behaviour and reactions, with fewer features fitting him for a special environment. For this reason he enjoys greater freedom and adaptability. In order to be able to pass on the necessarry lessons for survival, man must have command of his speech, and as a species can only exist within communities. This presupposes an instinctive drive to make rules and regulations for ordered living in society.Speech is not only a means of communication but also the basis and precondition of abstract thinking. Complete aphasia implies the loss of this ability. It would deprive man from the most important of his key functions. Therefore it is inhuman. These reflections have convinced me absolutely, that neurosurgical interventions, which would have the predictable result of total aphasia, must not be performed, even though prolongation of life, but without speech, might thus be bought. 相似文献
The injuries sustained in 6 national karate competitions in Finland were studied by analyzing data from 450 bouts during the season 1991–1992. The analyzed data included a personal interview with each competitor and detailed information on the bouts and any injuries sustained. The overall probability of injury was 0.28 per bout. These injuries occurred to 16% of the 647 competitors. Occurrence of injury was greatest among adult men, which was pronounced in final bouts. Of all injuries diagnosed by the physicians for the competitions, more than 95% were localized to the head. The majority of these were minor injuries. Experienced competitors were more injury-prone than beginners. On the other hand, none of the background factors studied significantly affected the probability of injuring one's opponent. Most injuries and penalties, as well as full scores, were caused by direct punches to the head. From these findings it was concluded that a protective guard for the head together with modification of competition rules could significantly reduce injuries. 相似文献
Inanimate structures cannot detect and repair their fatigue damage or microdamage, so to minimize it they need more structural
material and strength. Living bone handles this matter differently. Bone modeling drifts adapt bone architecture and strength
to the loads on bones in ways that tend to keep strains from exceeding a “modeling threshold” range. Strains (or equivalent
features) above that threshold switch mechanically controlled modeling ON. Where strains stay below that threshold, this modeling
goes OFF. Repeatedly loading-deloading a bone causes microdamage in it, and basic multicellular unit (BMU)-based bone remodeling
normally repairs it. Where strains stay below an operational “microdamage threshold,” remodeling can repair whatever microdamage
happens for as long as it happens. Strains above that threshold can cause too much microdamage to repair completely and lead
to fatigue fractures of trabeculae or whole bones. The modeling threshold normally lies comforably below the microdamage threshold.
Since modeling normally adjusts bone architecture to keep strains from exceeding the modeling threshold, this keeps strains
below the microdamage threshold, too, and voluntary activities do not cause more microdamage than remodeling can repair. Therefore,
long-distance runners do not need more bone mass and strength than nonrunners of comparable age, sex, and body size. 相似文献
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) mandates the use of brightly colored, intraoral mouth- guards by football players to reduce the frequency and severity of craniofacial and intraoral morbidity and mortality, and to enhance the ability of officials to observe player compliance. The purpose of this 12-question mail survey was to determine the attitudes of on-Held game officials regarding current NCAA mouthguard regulations and patterns of utilization by college football players. The sample consisted of all 50 Big East Football Conference officials; a response rate of 100 percent was achieved. Only 42 percent of the officials reported observing all players in compliance, and quarterbacks were identified by others as the least compliant group (52%). The majority (88%) indicated that the 1990 rule for brightly colored mouthguards had been beneficial to them in determining player compliance, and 52 percent reported that this rule had resulted in more frequent use by these athletes. Nearly all officials (96%) indicated that they would issue a warning for noncompliance to the player or coach, rather than charging a timeout for a violation as prescribed by NCAA regulations. The majority (70%) believe current enforcement is appropriate, but expressed the opinion that coaches should be held more accountable for player compliance. 相似文献
Summary In two elderly patients with frontal lobe dementia and in two others with progressive aphasia an inverse relationship between the severity of protein deposition and the principal pathology of these disorders was noted. Deposition of protein occurred only in areas of cortex where functional (viable) neurones were still present and was absent where neuronal decimation had taken place. Such findings suggest that the presence of functional neurones is necessary for protein deposition to occur and, therefore, that neurones may be the source of the amyloid protein that is deposited within brain parenchyma not only in these disorders but also in other conditions, particularly Alzheimer's disease.Supported by a grant from the North Western Regional Health Authority (DJ) and a B.Sc Intercalated Studentship from the MRC (PWS) 相似文献
Context: Athletes in the United States are at high risk for using spit (smokeless) tobacco (ST) and incurring its associated adverse health effects. Objective: To examine whether an athletic trainer-directed ST intervention could decrease initiation and promote cessation of ST use among male collegiate baseball athletes.Design: Stratified, cluster-randomized controlled trial.Setting: Fifty-two California colleges.Patients or Other Participant(s): A total of 883 subjects in 27 intervention colleges and 702 subjects in 25 control colleges participated, as did 48 certified athletic trainers.Intervention(s): For college athletic trainers and associated dental professionals, a 3-hour video conference, and for collegiate athletes, an oral cancer screening with feedback and brief counseling during the preseason health screenings, athletic trainer support for cessation, and a peer-led educational baseball team meeting.Main Outcome Measure(s): The subjects' ST use over 1 year was assessed by self-report. At the end of the study, the certified athletic trainers were mailed a survey assessing their tobacco use and perceptions and behavior related to tobacco control in the athletic environment. We used multivariable logistic regression models for clustered responses (generalized estimating equations) to test the difference between groups in ST-use initiation and cessation and to identify significant overall predictors of noninitiation and cessation of ST use. Results: Of the 1585 athletes recruited, 1248 (78.7%) were followed up at 12 months. In addition, 48 of the 52 athletic trainers (92%) responded to the 1-year follow-up survey. The ST-use initiation (incidence) was 5.1% in intervention colleges and 8.4% in control colleges (generalized estimating equation odds ratio = 0.58, 95% confidence interval = 0.35-0.99). Predictors of ST noninitiation were low lifetime tobacco and monthly alcohol use (odds ratio = 1.98, 95% confidence interval = 1.40- 2.82) and athletic trainers' report that the baseball coach supported ST-use prevention activities (odds ratio = 1.43, 95% confidence interval = 1.11-1.83). Although at 1 year, cessation of ST use was relatively high in both groups (36%), we noted no significant difference between the groups (odd ratio = 0.94, 95% confidence interval = 0.70-1.27).Conclusions: The intervention was significantly effective in preventing incident ST use but did not significantly increase cessation beyond that seen in the control group. The latter finding is inconsistent with previous studies and may be explained by spillover of the intervention to control colleges, other anti-tobacco activity in control colleges, and/or the small sample of dependent ST users enrolled in the study. 相似文献
The authors describe a patient who suffered two successive, right and left, strokes that caused bilateral rolandic operculum damage. The clinical picture was characterized by selective impairment of volitional facio-pharyngo-glosso-masticatory movements with sparing of automatic and reflex motor activity (Foix-Chavany-Marie syndrome). Though completely speechless, the patient was not aphasic. This dissociation is discussed in the light of the peculiar localization of lesions evidenced by CT-scan.
Sommario
