Venom delivery systems (VDS) are common in the animal kingdom, but rare amongst mammals. New definitions of venom allow us to reconsider its diversity amongst mammals by reviewing the VDS of Chiroptera, Eulipotyphla, Monotremata, and Primates. All orders use modified anterior dentition as the venom delivery apparatus, except Monotremata, which possesses a crural system. The venom gland in most taxa is a modified submaxillary salivary gland. In Primates, the saliva is activated when combined with brachial gland exudate. In Monotremata, the crural spur contains the venom duct. Venom functions include feeding, intraspecific competition, anti-predator defense and parasite defense. Including mammals in discussion of venom evolution could prove vital in our understanding protein functioning in mammals and provide a new avenue for biomedical and therapeutic applications and drug discovery.  相似文献

Parasites are a selective force that shape communities and ecosystems. Hosts represent a food source, habitat, and a way to disperse. In recent years, investigations dealing with bats and their role as hosts to numerous parasitic organisms, including metazoan ectoparasites and endoparasites have increased, and soft ticks (Parasitiformes: Ixodida: Argasidae) are among the best known. In Mexico, 16 species of soft ticks associated with bats have been reported up to now, but there are no specific records of soft ticks parasitizing Leptonycteris yerbabuenae in the country. Herein, we record for the first time the presence of Ornithodoros dyeri parasitizing L. yerbabuenae and report an extension of its geographic distribution. The same tick species was also recorded from the California leaf-nosed bat (Macrotus californicus). Data on prevalence, mean intensity, mean abundance, tick identification, and possible scenarios of life cycle associations for O. dyeri and one of its hosts, L. yerbabuenae, are discussed.  相似文献

Filoviruses, including Ebolavirus and Marburgvirus, pose significant threats to public health and species conservation by causing hemorrhagic fever outbreaks with high mortality rates. Since the first outbreak in 1967, their origins, natural history, and ecology remained elusive until recent studies linked them through molecular, serological, and virological studies to bats. We review the ecology, epidemiology, and natural history of these systems, drawing on examples from other bat-borne zoonoses, and highlight key areas for future research. We compare and contrast results from ecological and virological studies of bats and filoviruses with those of other systems. We also highlight how advanced methods, such as more recent serological assays, can be interlinked with flexible statistical methods and experimental studies to inform the field studies necessary to understand filovirus persistence in wildlife populations and cross-species transmission leading to outbreaks. We highlight the need for a more unified, global surveillance strategy for filoviruses in wildlife, and advocate for more integrated, multi-disciplinary approaches to understand dynamics in bat populations to ultimately mitigate or prevent potentially devastating disease outbreaks.  相似文献

Most diploid species arise from single-species ancestors. Hybrid origins of new species are uncommon (except among polyploids) and are documented infrequently in animals. Examples of natural hybridization leading to speciation in mammals are exceedingly rare. Here, we show a Caribbean species of bat (Artibeus schwartzi) has a nuclear genome derived from two nonsister but congeneric species (A. jamaicensis and A. planirostris) and a mitochondrial genome that is from a third extinct or uncharacterized congener. Artibeus schwartzi is self-sustaining, morphologically distinct, and exists in near geographic isolation of its known parent species. Island effects (i.e., area, reduced habitat variability, and geographic isolation) likely have restricted gene flow from parental species into the Caribbean populations of this hybrid lineage, thus contributing to local adaptation and isolation of this newly produced taxon. We hypothesize differential rates of the development of reproductive isolation within the genus and estimate that 2.5 million years was an insufficient amount of time for the development of postzygotic isolation among the three species that hybridized to produce A. schwartzi. Reticulated evolution thus has resulted in a genomic combination from three evolutionary lineages and a transgressive phenotype that is distinct from all other known species of Artibeus. The data herein further demonstrate the phenomenon of speciation by hybridization in mammals is possible in nature.  相似文献

The testis is a classical target for androgens, especially testosterone, acting via androgen receptor (AR). Alternatively, androgens can be aromatized to produce estrogens which act via specific receptors ERα and ERβ. Although estrogen action is essential for maintenance of male fertility, studies regarding the expression of ERα and ERβ in testis are restricted to a few species of rodent and domestic animals, but rarely in wild species. To our knowledge, there are no studies in Chiroptera species. Chiroptera represent one of the largest and most diversified orders of mammals, which possess several interesting reproductive features, including higher affinity of SHBG for estrogens than androgens. Therefore, we thought that bats would constitute a good model for investigation of the role of estrogens in the male. In this study, the distribution of ERα, ERβ and AR were evaluated in the testis of the big fruit-eating bat Artibeus lituratus and their levels were compared during reproductive and regressive periods. The results showed that ERα and AR were restricted to the somatic cells of the testis, whereas ERβ was widely distributed in both somatic and spermatogenic cells in a cellular and stage-specific fashion. We demonstrated for the first time by immunohistochemistry, and confirmed by Western blotting, that ERβ and AR increased during regression. The localization of ERα, ERβ and AR in a seasonal, cell and stage-specific fashion in the testis of A. lituratus suggests that these receptors may play important roles in testis function during reproductive and non-reproductive periods.  相似文献

The current study was designed to reveal the retinotectal pathway in the brain of the echolocating megabat Rousettus aegyptiacus. The retinotectal pathway of other species of megabats shows the primate-like pattern of decussation in the retina; however, it has been reported that the echolocating Rousettus did not share this feature. To test this prior result we injected fluorescent dextran tract tracers into the right (fluororuby) and left (fluoroemerald) superior colliculi of three adult Rousettus. After a 2-week survival period the animals were killed, fixed via transcardial perfusion, and the retinas whole mounted and examined under fluorescent excitation to reveal the pattern of retrograde transport. Red and green labeled retinotectal ganglion cells were found in side-by-side patches on either side of a vertical decussation line in the temporal retina of all six retinas. The Rousettus examined thus exhibited the same pattern of retinal decussation as reported previously for other megabats and primates, but unlike that seen in other mammals. The current result indicates that the prior study appears to have suffered technical problems leading to an incorrect conclusion. The results of our study indicate that, as may be expected, all megabats share the derived retinotectal pathway once thought to be the exclusive domain of primates. The current study provides additional support for the diphyletic origin of the Chiroptera and aligns the megabats phylogenetically as a sister group to primates.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the presence of Rickettsia in soft ticks (Acari: Argasidae) collected from insectivorous bats (Chiroptera) in Santa Fe province, Argentina. First, a subset of ticks were mounted in Hoyer’s medium to be determined by morphological characters and then confirmed by sequencing the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene. Also ticks were processed by PCR assays using primers CS-78 and CS-323, which amplify a fragment of the Rickettsia spp. gltA gene. Positive ticks were subjected to a second PCR round with primers Rr190.70p and Rr190.701n of the spotted fever group rickettsiae ompA gene. A phylogenetic analysis was performed with Maximum-likelihood method, and the best fitting substitution models were determined with the Akaike Information Criterion. Five bats of the species Eptesicus diminutus Osgood, 1915, Eptesicus furinalis (d’Orbigny and Gervais, 1847), Eptesicus spp. (Vespertilionidae), and Molossops temminckii Burmeister, 1854 (Molossidae) were parasitized with Ornithodoros hasei (Schulze, 1935) larvae. One E. diminutus ticks’ tested positive to “Candidatus Rickettsia wissemanii”, a spotted fever group rickettsiae. The association O. hasei –“Ca. R. wissemanii” detected in this study represents the first evidence of a Rickettsia in Ornithodoros ticks in Argentina and the third report of this association in America. Also, this finding constitutes the first record of “Ca. R. wissemanii” in Argentina. Finally, we found for the first time the insectivorous bats E. diminutus and E. furinalis parasitized with O. hasei larvae. These findings add two new hosts and a new location, the southernmost recorded to date, for O. hasei.  相似文献
