Objective. To compare student-perceived utility of two types of score reports.Methods. Assessment standards were followed to create a new examination score report for pharmacotherapy coursework. Student examination scores were returned using the traditional score report, the utility of which students rated along 9 dimensions. A mastery score report was also distributed, and students rated it on the same 9 dimensions. The ratings were compared to determine which the students perceived as more useful.Results. The students rated the mastery score report significantly better on each of the 9 dimensions and in aggregate.Conclusion. Pharmacy students perceived the mastery score report as more useful in helping them improve their achievement of educational outcomes.  相似文献

Full‐information factor analysis of ordinal data was employed to determine the factorial structure of the responses of 31,822 adult Swedish women to the 20 “positive” psychotic experience items of the Community Assessment of Psychic Experiences (CAPE) questionnaire. Five separable but correlated trait dimensions were found, reflecting Paranoia, Grandiosity, Magical Thinking, Delusions, and Hallucinations. High scores on any dimension were associated with a higher probability of questionnaire‐assessed lifetime major depressive episodes or generalized anxiety disorder, though Grandiosity was so only to a very small degree. Our results closely match previous findings among adolescents and young women, and demonstrate that psychotic experiences cannot be considered a single trait. Primary liver cancer or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most frequent tumors representing the fifth commonest malignancy worldwide and the third cause of mortality from cancer. Currently, the treatments for HCC are not so effective and new strategies are needed for its fight. Chemoprevention, the use of natural or synthetic chemical agents to reverse, suppress or prevent carcinogenesis is considered an important way for confronting HCC. Many of the chemopreventive agents are phytochemicals, namely non-nutritive plant chemicals with protective or disease preventive properties. In this review, we focus on plant polyphenols, one of the most important classes of phytochemicals, their chemopreventive properties against HCC and discuss the molecular mechanisms accounting for this activity.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: The present study was designed to determine the antiarrhythmic effect of caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), an active component of propolis, which exhibits antioxidant properties, in rats subjected to myocardial ischemia and ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. DESIGN AND METHODS: Rats were subjected to 30 min coronary artery occlusion for evaluating the effect of CAPE on the myocardial ischemia injury. While in the myocardial I/R injury study, the coronary artery was ligated for a 5-min period of ischemia followed by a 30-min period of reperfusion. Animals were pretreated with or without CAPE before coronary artery ligation and the severity of myocardial ischemia- and I/R-induced arrhythmias and mortality were compared. RESULTS: Pretreatment of CAPE (0.1 and 1 microg/kg) not only reduced both the incidence and duration of ventricular tachycardia (VT) and ventricular fibrillation (VF) but also decreased the mortality during the myocardial ischemia and I/R injury period. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that CAPE is a potent antiarrhythmic agent with cardioprotective effects in myocardial ischemia and I/R injury rats.  相似文献

Ethnopharmacological relevance

The rhizomes of Kaempferia parviflora Wall. ex Baker have been traditionally used in Thailand to treat abscesses, gout, and peptic ulcers.

Aim

Previously, we reported that the chloroform fraction of a Kaempferia parviflora extract had an inhibitory effect on rat paw-edema. In the present study, we isolated the constituents of this fraction and investigated the anti-inflammatory mechanism against nitric oxide (NO) production, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) as well as phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase (p-ERK), and phosphorylated c-Jun N-terminal kinase (p-JNK). In addition, effects of trimethylapigenin (4) on the enzyme activities of protein kinases possibly leading to iNOS expression were examined to clarify the targets.

Materials and methods

The chloroform fraction was isolated using silica gel column chromatography and HPLC. Isolated compounds were tested against NO and TNF-α using RAW264.7 cells. Cytotoxicity and iNOS, p-ERK and p-JNK expression were also examined.

Results

Three active components, 5,7-dimethoxyflavone (2), trimethylapigenin (4), and tetramethylluteolin (5), markedly inhibited the production of NO in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated RAW264.7 cells. Compounds 2, 4, and 5 moderately inhibited production of TNF-α. Compounds 2, 4, and 5 strongly inhibited expression of iNOS mRNA and iNOS protein in a dose-dependent manner, but did not inhibit p-ERK or p-JNK protein expression. The most active compound, 4, did not inhibit the enzyme activity of inhibitor of κB kinases or mitogen-activated protein kinases, but inhibited that of spleen tyrosine kinase (SYK).

Conclusion

The mechanism responsible for the anti-inflammatory activity of methoxyflavonoids from the chloroform fraction of the rhizomes of Kaempferia parviflora is mainly the inhibition of iNOS expression, and the inhibition of SYK by 4 may be involved in the suppression of LPS-induced signaling in macrophages.  相似文献

Propolis has been used empirically for centuries and it was always mentioned as an immunomodulatory agent. In recent years, in vitro and in vivo assays provided new information concerning its mechanisms of action, thus a review dealing with propolis and the immune system became imperative. This review compiles data from our laboratory as well as from other researchers, focusing on its chemical composition and botanical sources, the seasonal effect on its composition and biological properties, its immunomodulatory and antitumor properties, considering its effects on antibody production and on different cells of the immune system, involving the innate and adaptive immune response. In vitro and in vivo assays demonstrated the modulatory action of propolis on murine peritoneal macrophages, increasing their microbicidal activity. Its stimulant action on the lytic activity of natural killer cells against tumor cells, and on antibody production was demonstrated. Propolis inhibitory effects on lymphoproliferation may be associated to its anti-inflammatory property. In immunological assays, the best results were observed when propolis was administered over a short-term to animals. Propolis antitumor property and its anticarcinogenic and antimutagenic potential are discussed. Since humans have used propolis for different purposes and propolis-containing products have been marketed, the knowledge of its properties with scientific basis is not only of academic interest but also of those who use propolis as well. This review opens a new perspective on the investigation of propolis biological properties, mainly with respect to the immune system.  相似文献

Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) is a phenolic active component of propolis of honeybee hives and reduces heart rate and blood pressure in rats. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of vagal activity and atropine blockage on the bradycardic and hypotensive effects of CAPE in rats. The rats were divided into five groups (n=8). Saline and vehicle (10% ethanol) of CAPE were given to the first and second groups, respectively. Group 3 was treated with 5 mg/kg CAPE. Group 4 bivagotomized and treated with 5 mg/kg CAPE. Group 5 treated with atropine (5 μg/μL/min) continuously and treated with CAPE. The electrophysiological monitoring was done for each experiment under urethane anaesthetize. As a result, CAPE caused intense and transient bradycardia and hypotension. Vagotomy completely abolished bradycardia occurred via CAPE injection; however atropine attenuated bradycardic effects of CAPE. On the other hand, hypotensive effect of CAPE was affected from neither bilateral vagotomy nor atropine treatment. It was thought that CAPE may exert its effects on heart rate via a central parasympathetic control mechanism, but not on central parasympathetic blood pressure control system. To study the possible interplay between glutathione metabolism of and MRP inhibition by thiol reactive compounds, the interactions of a series of alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds with multidrug resistance proteins 1 and 2 (MRP1/ABCC1 and MRP2/ABCC2) were studied. Alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds react with glutathione, and therefore either their parent compound or their intracellularly formed glutathione metabolite(s) can modulate MRP-activity. Inhibition was studied in Madin-Darby canine kidney cells stably expressing MRP1 or MRP2, and isolated Sf9-MRP1 or Sf9-MRP2 membrane vesicles. In the latter model system metabolism is not an issue. Of the series tested, three distinct groups could be discriminated based on differences in interplay of glutathione metabolism with MRP1 inhibition. Curcumin inhibited MRP1 transport only in the vesicle model pointing at inhibition by the parent compound. The glutathione conjugates of curcumin also inhibit MRP1 mediated transport, but to a much lesser extent than the parent compound curcumin. In the cellular model system, it was demonstrated that glutathione conjugation of curcumin leads to inactivation of its inhibitory potential. Demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin inhibited MRP1 in both the vesicle and cellular model pointing at inhibitory potency of at least the parent compound and possibly their metabolites. A second group, including caffeic acid phenethyl ester inhibited MRP1-mediated calcein transport only in the MDCKII-MRP1 cells, and not in the vesicle model indicating that metabolism appeared a prerequisite to generate the active inhibitor. Finally cinnamaldehyde, crotonaldehyde, trans-2-hexanal, citral, and acrolein did not inhibit MRP1. For MRP2, inhibition was much less in both model systems, with the three curcuminoids being the most effective. The results of this study show the importance to study the complex interplay between MRP-inhibitors and their cellular metabolism, the latter affecting the ultimate potential of a compound for cellular MRP-inhibition.  相似文献

AIMS: To investigate the effect of exposure to cannabis early in adolescence on subclinical positive and negative symptoms of psychosis. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey in the context of an ongoing cohort study. SETTING: Government-supported general population cohort study. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 3500 representative 19-year olds in Greece. MEASUREMENTS: Subjects filled in the 40-item Community Assessment of Psychic Experiences, measuring subclinical positive (paranoia, hallucinations, grandiosity, first-rank symptoms) and negative psychosis dimensions and depression. Drug use was also reported on. FINDINGS: Use of cannabis was associated positively with both positive and negative dimensions of psychosis, independent of each other, and of depression. An association between cannabis and depression disappeared after adjustment for the negative psychosis dimensions. First use of cannabis below age 16 years was associated with a much stronger effect than first use after age 15 years, independent of life-time frequency of use. The association between cannabis and psychosis was not influenced by the distress associated with the experiences, indicating that self-medication may be an unlikely explanation for the entire association between cannabis and psychosis. CONCLUSIONS: These results add credence to the hypothesis that cannabis contributes to the population level of expression of psychosis. In particular, exposure early in adolescence may increase the risk for the subclinical positive and negative dimensions of psychosis, but not for depression.  相似文献

Outcomes from The Center for Advancement of Pharmacy Education (CAPE) are intended to represent the terminal knowledge, skills, and attitudes pharmacy students should possess and have guided delivery of pharmacy education for more than two decades. Advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs) are the endpoint of pharmacy curricula where demonstration and assessment of terminal learning occurs. This review examines published literature in relation to the most recent CAPE outcomes to determine the extent to which they have been addressed during APPEs since 1996. Details related to the APPE focus, intervention(s)/learning setting(s), and assessments are summarized according to the 15 CAPE outcomes. Further, the assessments are categorized according to the level of learning achieved using an available method. Common CAPE outcomes are highlighted, as well as those for which published reports are lacking for APPEs. The range and quality of assessments are discussed and emphasize the need for continuous improvement of scholarly design and assessment.  相似文献
