Digoxin-like factor in infants of diabetic mothers not receiving digoxin therapy

Serum digoxin-like factor was detected in infants of diabetic mothers who were insulin-dependent or diet controlled. No statistical difference was found between the serum digoxin-like factor levels of the infants of diabetic mothers and the controls.     

Hereditary fructose intolerance in a patient with phenylketonuria.

Classical phenylketonuria (PKU) and hereditary fructose intolerance (HFI) are two inborn errors of metabolism that have an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. In this paper, we described a 3-year-old girl with PKU and HFI. The occurrence of these two defects in the same patient is thought to be fortuitous and not genetically related since this is the first reported case and the statistical probability of such an occurrence is very low.     

Copper,Zinc and Lead Enrichments in Sediments from Guacanayabo Gulf,Cuba, and Its Bioaccumulation in Oysters,Crassostrea rhizophorae

Levels of iron, copper, zinc and lead were determined in sediments and soft tissue of the oyster Crassostrea rhizophorae collected from Guacanayabo Gulf, Cuba. Metal-to-Iron ratio in sediments shows an average enrichment for Cu (5,1), Pb (11,7) and Zn (1,3) in the last 20 years. Metal concentrations found in soft tissue of C. rhizophorae are site dependent. The average biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) obtained for Fe, Cu and Pb are less than unity in all cases, indicating that only a little fraction of Cu and Pb in the sediments is bioavailable, independently of their enrichments. Zinc has an average BSAF value of 2.4 and may represent a serious impact in the area. The concentrations of zinc and copper in some of the oysters are above typical public health recommended limits.     

Comparative genomic hybridization in ganglioneuroblastomas.

The ganglioneuroblastoma are rare lesions with widespread neuronal differentiation that have been classified as intermediate stages between neuroblastoma and ganglioneuroma. To identify overall chromosome aberrations in ganglioneuroblastoma, we performed comparative genomic hybridization. All of the five tumor samples were found to exhibit multiple gains involving different chromosomal regions. Chromosomal gains displayed by chromosomes and chromosome loci were 2p25 approximately pter (60%), 5p15.1 approximately p15.3 (60%), 7 (60%), 13q22 approximately q31 (60%), and 22 (60%), which were detected as minimal common regions in all five tumor samples. Chromosome 22 gain, which had not been reported in neuronal tumors before, and novel site 13q22 approximately q31 may be considered to play an important role in progression and differentiation of ganglioneuroblastoma.     

Clinicopathologic evaluation of CDw75 antigen expression in patients with gastric carcinoma

Situated on mature B lymphocytes, CDw75 antigen is a sialylated carbohydrate epitope generated by the enzyme beta-galactosyl alpha-2,6-sialyltransferase. Although CDw75 antigen expression was found to be correlated with aggressive behaviour of tumour cells in gastric adenocarcinomas, its prognostic role still remains unknown. The objective of this study was to determine the value of CDw75 antigen expression as a marker of the metastatic potential and prognosis of gastric adenocarcinomas. CDw75 antigen expression was evaluated immunohistochemically in 64 tumours and their nodal metastases. The correlation was analysed between CDw75 antigen expression and selected clinicopathological variables, including survival. Positive staining was detected in 31 cases. Non-neoplastic gastric mucosa was consistently negative. CDw75 expression was correlated with larger tumour size (p<0.006), infiltrative growth pattern (p<0.044), advanced stage (p<0.0006), and positive lymph nodes (p<0.0003).The overall survival rate of patients with CDw75 expression was 28%, which was significantly worse than that of patients without CDw75 expression (53%) (p<0.0005). Multivariate analysis showed that CDw75 expression was an independent prognostic indicator, together with the growth pattern of the tumour. These results indicate that immunohistochemical detection of CDw75 antigen expression may be a good indicator of metastatic potential and of prognosis in patients with gastric carcinomas.     

Thrombin activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor activity, thrombin-antithrombin complex and D-dimer levels in preterm neonates with early respiratory distress syndrome

Intraalveolar fibrin deposition found in neonates with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is explained by the activation of the coagulation system and inefficient fibrinolysis. However, thrombin activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor activity (TAFIa), an inhibitor of fibrinolysis, and the ratio of D-dimer to thrombin-antithrombin complex (D-dimer/TAT), an index of fibrinolytic activity, have not been reported previously in neonatal RDS. Aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of plasma TAFIa levels on the fibrinolytic state in neonatal RDS. The RDS group (Group 1) consisted of 29 neonates, and 18 neonates served as the control group (Group 2). Plasma TAFIa levels and D-dimer/TAT ratios were evaluated in all neonates in the first 6 hr of life. Neonates in the RDS group were further divided into two subgroups; Group 1a consisted of 12 neonates with evidence of mild asphyxia (Apgar score at 5 min <7 and cord pH <7.26), and Group 1b consisted of 17 nonasphyxiated neonates. No significant difference was found in TAFIa levels and D-dimer/TAT ratios between Groups 1 and 2 [214% (56.2-361%) and 124.3 (4.4-3,921) in Group 1 and 201% (60.3-381%) and 147 (5.9-1,426) in Group 2]. There were negative correlations between cord pH and TAFIa levels in both groups. Increased TAFIa levels and decreased D-dimer/TAT ratios and platelet counts were detected in mildly asphyxiated neonates when compared with nonasphyxiated ones. TAFIa is not responsible for the hypofibrinolytic state reported in RDS. However, asphyxia influences TAFIa levels and increased TAFIa levels depress fibrinolysis.     

Serratia marcescens: an emerging microorganism in the neonatal intensive care unit

As smaller babies survive in neonatal intensive care units, late-onset septicemia with unusual pathogens appears. Between 1 January and 31 December 1998, in Hacettepe University Ihsan Dogramaci Children's Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, seven infants had S. marcescens isolates. Four babies had septicemia with the microorganism. The case fatality rate was 50 percent in infants with S. marcescens septicemia. The combination of ceftazidime or imipenem with amikacin appears appropriate for the treatment of newborns with Serratia infection.
