This study examined the reaction of children with a diagnosed disruptive behavior disorder (DBD) to violent movie scenes. Children without one of these disorders were tested as well. DBD children ranged in age from 8 to 12 years and were outpatients at The University of Kansas Medical Center's Department of Child Psychiatry. These children were diagnosed by a child psychiatrist as meeting Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th edition) (American Psychiatric Association 1994) (DSM-IV) diagnostic criteria for having at least one of three emotional disorders: attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and conduct disorder (CD). Results showed that the disordered children differed from the nondisordered children on several dimensions. This suggests that DBD children process the anti-social messages in violent movies differently from children without a psychiatric disorder. An unabated diet of antisocial media could have harmful effects on children with a psychiatric illness.  相似文献

Dissemination of Psychological First Aid (PFA) is challenging considering the complex nature of disaster response and the various disaster mental health (DMH) trainings available. To understand challenges to dissemination in community mental health centers (CMHCs), interviews were conducted with nine DMH providers associated with CMHCs. Consensual qualitative analysis was used to analyze data. Interviews were targeted toward understanding organizational infrastructure, DMH training requirements, and training needs. Results clarified challenges to DMH training in CMHCs and factors that may promote buy-in for trainings. For example, resources are limited and thus allocated for state and federal training requirements. Therefore, including PFA in these requirements could promote adoption. Additionally, a variety of training approaches that differ in content, style, and length would be useful. To conclude, a conceptual model for ways to promote buy-in for the PFA Guide is proposed.  相似文献

Hurricane Katrina caused many individuals to evacuate to towns and cities throughout the United States. Psychological First Aid (PFA) is a treatment program designed to help clinicians and other disaster relief workers address the needs of adults, youth, and families immediately following disasters. We conducted focus groups with disaster relief and evacuee service providers in the Kansas City Metro Area as an exploratory study to identify their perceptions of the needs of evacuees. Participants identified a number of mental health needs, as well as displacement-related challenges, including loss of social support, material loss, unemployment, and other stressful life events that were secondary to the hurricane. Many of these needs are consistent with principles presented in the PFA manual. We also found that service providers faced unique challenges when attempting to assist evacuees. We discuss implications of these findings for treatment programs and provide suggestions for addressing barriers to care.  相似文献

BackgroundEstimates of paralysis vary widely, largely owing to a lack of standard definition and nontargeted survey approaches. Like other poorly understood conditions such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, or chronic pain, paralysis falls outside the scope of clearly defined medical diagnosis, further complicating surveillance efforts. This inability to identify accurate prevalence makes developing policy interventions around the needs of many persons with these disabilities problematic. The objectives were to investigate how paralysis is being measured in the United States and to examine the validity of prevalence estimates based on current approaches.MethodsWe reviewed existing measurement instruments and surveyed 139 agencies and organizations to determine how they capture paralysis data.ResultsThere is a widespread reliance on ICD coding or broad functional capabilities for most state or federal agencies. Many organizations serving consumers depend on state registries for discrete conditions in which paralysis is not directly measured.ConclusionsImproved paralysis prevalence data will benefit from a more functional definition consistent with ICF guidelines, which can be part of future surveillance efforts at state and federal levels.  相似文献

The deterrent effect of poison-warning stickers   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
We examined the effect of poison-warning stickers on toddler behavior before and after an education program. Twenty children aged 12 to 30 months were randomly assigned to an experimental or control group. We observed the children for two five-minute sessions in a room containing ten pairs of containers, half of which were labeled with Mr Yuk stickers. Each child was allowed to play freely on the floor, and we recorded the manipulations of the labeled and unlabeled containers. During session 1, neither group showed a statistical preference for labeled or unlabeled containers. During session 2, control subjects again did not show a preference for labeled or unlabeled containers. We found that children in the experimental group preferred to touch labeled containers after undergoing education. Our findings suggest that toddlers may not be deterred from manipulating containers that are labeled with poison-warning stickers.  相似文献

This article describes the development, implementation, and preliminary evaluation of a school-based Intensive Mental Health Program (IMHP) for 50 children (42 boys, 8 girls) with severe, early-onset, serious emotional disturbances (SED). Eighty-four percent of the children showed clinically significant improvement in overall functioning as measured by the Child and Adolescent Functional Assessment Scale (CAFAS). Child functioning at home and school, behavior toward others, regulation of moods and emotions, self-harm, and problems in thinking improved significantly. Results provide initial support for the IMHP as a promising approach to serving the needs of children with SED.  相似文献

This study examined how relocation to a new community affects intimacy and companionship in close friendships by comparing experiences of early adolescents who began their 7th or 8th grade school year in a new community (111 boys, 96 girls) with those of residentially stable agemates (30 boys, 38 girls). Drawing from a developmental- contextual, multisystem conceptual framework and using a person-centered analytic approach, the study provides strong evidence that most adolescents experience a relatively brief period of diminished access to companionship and intimacy with close friends following relocation. The extent of diminution may be greater for adolescents with social anxiety or behavioral concerns. Findings have implications for families who are facing a move and for clinicians working with recently relocated adolescents.  相似文献
