In fishes, exploitation of aerial gas exchange has evolved independently many times, involving a variety of air-breathing organs. Indeed, air-breathing occurs in at least 49 known families of fish (Graham, 1997). Many amphibious vertebrates, at some stage of their development are actually trimodal breathers that use various combinations of respiratory surfaces to breath both water (skin and/or gill) and air (skin and/or lung). The present review examines the evolutionary implications of air-breathing organs in fishes and the morphology of the peripheral receptors and the neurotransmitter content of the cells involved in the control of air-breathing. Control of breathing, whether gill ventilation or air-breathing, is influenced by feedback from peripheral and/or central nervous system receptors that respond to changes in PO2, PCO2 and/or pH. Although the specific chemoreceptors mediating the respiratory reflexes have not been conclusively identified, studies in water-breathing teleosts have implicated the neuroepithelial cells (NECs) existing in gill tissues as the O2 sensitive chemoreceptors that initiate the cardiorespiratory reflexes in aquatic vertebrates. Some of the air-breathing fishes, such as Protopterus, Polypterus and Amia have been shown to have NECs in the gills and/or lungs, although the role of these receptors and their innervation in the control of breathing is not known. NECs have been also reported in the specialized respiratory epithelia of accessory respiratory organs (ARO’s) of some catfish species and in the gill and skin of the mudskipper Periophthalmodon schlosseri. Unlike teleosts matching an O2-oriented ventilation to ambient O2 levels, lungfishes have central and peripheral H+/CO2 receptors that control the acid-base status of the blood. 相似文献

Gastrointestinal complications are common after renal transplantation, and they have a wide clinical spectrum, varying from diarrhoea to post-transplant inflammatory bowel disease(IBD). Chronic immunosuppression may increase the risk of post-transplant infection and medication-related injury and may also be responsible for IBD in kidney transplant re-cipients despite immunosuppression. Differentiating the various forms of post-transplant colitis is challenging, since most have similar clinical and histological features. Drug-related colitis are the most frequently encountered colitis after kidney transplantation, particularly those related to the chronic use of mycophenolate mofetil, while de novo IBDs are quite rare. This review will explore colitis after kidney transplantation, with a particular focus on different clinical and histological features, attempting to clearly identify the right treatment, thereby improving the final outcome of patients. 相似文献

Dendritic cells are excellent targets for antigen-specific immune intervention. Here we attempted to introduce a CD8 T cell-dependent epitope into dendritic cells for presentation on major histocompatibility complex class I and induction of immunity. Murine bone-marrow-derived dendritic cells were subjected to electroporation with mRNA transcribed in vitro from a plasmid encoding lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus glycoprotein or enhanced green fluorescent protein under the control of a T7 promotor. The transfection efficiency of dendritic cells was 22 to 40%. Maturation was not inhibited by the electroporation. Dendritic cells electroporated with the appropriate antigen induced cell number-dependent in vitro proliferation in CD8 T cells expressing a transgenic receptor recognizing the 33 to 41 sequence of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus glycoprotein in association with H-2Kb/Db, indicating correct synthesis, processing, and presentation of the epitope. Naive C57BL/6 mice vaccinated with electroporated dendritic cells and challenged with lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus were protected. Vaccination induced epitope-specific T cells as assessed by tetramer staining in blood and spleen. These results indicate that targeting dendritic cells with antigen-encoding mRNA can induce antigen-specific CD8 T cell responses as well as protective anti-viral immunity in vivo. Targeting dendritic cells with antigen-encoding mRNA may find wider application for immune intervention in disorders such as autoimmunity and cancer. 相似文献

BackgroundA careful assessment of a living donor is mandatory to minimize the short- and long-term risk related to kidney donation. In this study, we evaluated the incidence of incidental findings (IFs) in a large population of potential living kidney donors. Moreover, this study evaluated if the presence of IFs could influence the chance of living kidney donation and post-transplant outcomes.MethodsOne hundred and sixty consecutive potential prospective living kidney transplant donors, who underwent a multidetector computed tomography angiography (MDCTA), were included in the study. An IF was defined as an incidentally discovered mass or lesion, detected by computed tomography angiography during the imaging evaluation of potential living donors. Clinical outcomes of living donors with IF were compared with those without IF.ResultsIn 10 patients (6.2%) an incidental finding was detected at MDCTA assessment. Among the 10 patients presenting with an IF, 7 patients (4.3%) were excluded from the living donation: 2 patients with an adrenal lesion, 3 patients with cancer, and 2 patients with a large (>8 cm) renal cyst. Graft and patient survival of kidney transplant recipients of donors with IFs were not significantly different to those receiving a kidney from living donors without IFs.ConclusionsIncidental findings are frequently discovered during living kidney donor evaluation. Whereas most are asymptomatic or not clinically relevant, predonation screening could identify potentially life-threatening diseases at an earlier stage, allowing for a more radical treatment. 相似文献
