The immunological indices in different types of gouty nephropathy and the degree of renal structure involvement

Patients with different types of podagric nephropathy were examined for 21 indicators of the functional activity of T and B lymphocytes and neutrophils. The data obtained were compared to the degree of impairment of the basic renal structures. Among the study immunologic indicators to estimate the gravity of morphological alterations in the glomeruli, the decrease of the titers of antibodies to DNA is of definite specificity, whereas the fall of the concentration of circulating immune complexes is of definite specificity in the assessment of alteration in the stroma.     

A comprehensive laboratory evaluation of changes in the fibrinogen molecule in the diagnosis of acquired coagulopathy conditions

A scheme of physicochemical determination of fibrinogen and the major molecular derivatives in a single sample of plasma is suggested, available for the majority of clinical laboratories. Such determination gives valuable information for a clinician. Among other things, the level of rapidly thrombin clotted fibrinogen portion is determined, as is the content of high-molecular fibrin monomer complexes, not clotted with thrombin, and the level of fibrinogen and fibrin proteolytic degradation products. Clinical (in 42 patients with various conditions) and experimental (coagulopathy in amniotic fluid embolism) application of this scheme has confirmed its clinico-diagnostic value.     

Solitary bronchioloalveolar carcinoma: CT criteria

The computed tomographic (CT) scans of 30 patients with solitary bronchioloalveolar carcinoma were reviewed. Common features at CT included the peripheral or subpleural location of a pulmonary mass (25 cases), pseudocavitation (18 cases), heterogeneous attenuation (17 cases), irregular margins forming a star pattern (22 cases), and pleural tags (21 cases). Using these CT criteria, four independent observers attempted to identify cases of bronchioloalveolar carcinoma from a larger sample of lung cancers and benign lesions by categorizing a series of test cases into four probability categories. Although the bronchioloalveolar carcinomas were correctly ranked in the two highest probability categories 75% of the time (in 45 of 60 cases), there was considerable overlap with other lung lesions, particularly with adenocarcinoma and large cell undifferentiated carcinoma. However, even though the typical features of bronchioloalveolar carcinoma are not invariable or highly specific, they are characteristic enough to suggest the diagnosis.     

The spatial pattern of the synaptic vesicular apparatus as a correlate of transmitter storage models.

A statistical stereological approach which allows one to derive a three-dimensional pattern of synaptic vesicle accumulation in relation to the active zone from an analysis of electron micrograms (random sections) of synapses is described. This approach is illustrated with a study of presynaptic terminals from the dorsal horn of the cat spinal cord, based on the morphometrical treatment of 105 micrographs containing 5190 synaptic vesicles. The spatial pattern obtained was found to have a bimodal shape, which can be considered a possible structural correlate of the two-pool model of transmitter storage. The connection of similar quantitative estimates with physiological data is discussed.
