Transitional cell carcinoma of the ureteral stump eight years after nephrectomy for benign disease

A case of primary carcinoma of the ureteral stump is reported. A 68-year-old man presented with asymptomatic gross hematuria. He had undergone a right nephrectomy for a benign disease previously. Cystoscopy and left ureteroscopy showed no abnormalities. A computed tomography showed a solid mass on the region of the right ureteral stump. He underwent a right ureterectomy and bladder cuff resection. A pathological examination showed transitional cell carcinoma.     

Parameters of Liver Spleen Scans as an Indication of Portal Hypertension

In 37 patients with suspected portal hypertension, the bone marrow and splenic uptake on 99mTc-sulfur colloid liver spleen scans correlated with increased portal pressures. The degree of increase was not possible to predict from the scans. In portacaval shunt patients, those with normal portal pressures could not be separated from those with elevated pressures on the basis of the scan alone.     

Ten cases of congenital urethral stricture in childhood with enuresis

BACKGROUND: To report short-term clinical outcomes of endoscopic correction of congenital urethral stricture in 10 boys who suffer from enuresis resistant to conservative therapy. METHODS: Fifteen boys ranging between 5 and 15 years old consulted our clinics for nocturnal and diurnal enuresis which had not been improved by medication and behavioral therapy. Among them, voiding cystography revealed bulbar narrowing (Cobb's Collar) in 10 cases and vesico-ureteral reflux was found in four cases (seven ureters). Endoscopically, this lesion was recognized as a ring-form stenosis just distal to the urethral sphincter. It was incised with infantile urethrotome. RESULTS: Vesico-ureteral reflux was resolved in four ureters and improved in one. In all cases, daytime enuresis resolved dramatically and night enuresis became controllable. CONCLUSIONS: Boys who suffer from diurnal enuresis should immediately be explored for the existence of congenital urethral stenosis. Early resolution may bring about better urinary behavior.     

Effects of Bleomycin for Epidermoid Carcinoma of Head and Neck

Bleomycin, a new antitumor agent was applied in the therapyof 100 cases of head and neck cancer. Out of the 75 cases givenBLM therapy only, tumor disappeared in 10 cases and in 5 casesthere was no recurrence for more than 6 months. The frequencyof tumor regression was 67.5% for previously untreated casesand 42.0% for previously otherwise treated cases. Local injectionof BLM were given to 5 cases of small recurrent foci which appearedafter radiotherapy, of which 3 cases did not show recurrencefor more than one year. Tumor regression seemed to be enhanced by simultaneous irradiation.Histological findings were often comparable to those inducedby curative irradiation. They indicated a marked destructionof the tumor and occasional local cure. Eight cases of interstitial pneumonia, of which 3 were of severedegree, were observed as side effect.
