Two cultivars of Japanese parsley were harvested in different seasons; their antioxidant capacities were evaluated by oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) methods, and the contents of hydrophilic and lipophilic antioxidants were compared. Japanese parsley possessed potent antioxidant capacities both in hydrophilic and lipophilic extracts when evaluated by ORAC methods. LC/MS/MS analyses revealed that chlorogenic acid and four kinds of quercetin glycosides were major antioxidants in the hydrophilic extract. Lutein was the main contributor to the antioxidant capacity of the lipophilic extract. Antioxidant capacities of the hydrophilic extracts of both cultivars tended to be higher in winter because of the increase in the contents of chlorogenic acid and quercetin glycosides. An obvious trend in the lipophilic antioxidant capacities or lutein contents was not observed irrespective of the cultivar.  相似文献

We report a 45-year-old woman with a meningioma which was in contact with only the pituitary stalk on MRI. As the pituitary stalk has no dura mater, we suggest this tumour may have originated from the arachnoid membrane of the pituitary stalk. Though some reports have shown that meningiomas can arise from sites lacking a dural component, this is the first report of a meningioma originating from the pituitary stalk. A strain of Amycolatopsis orientalis No. Q427-8 (ATCC 53884) was found to produce a complex of new antiviral antibiotics, quartromicin which consisted of at least six components A1, A2, A3, D1, D2 and D3. Structural studies suggested that they are a novel type of molecules unrelated to any known antibiotics. Each component of quartromicin exhibited antiviral activity against herpes simplex virus type 1, influenza virus type A and human immunodeficiency virus.  相似文献

To characterize the lipid and lipoprotein abnormalities in patients with diabetes mellitus and evaluate the risks and benefits of marketed pharmacologic therapies, a MEDLINE search of the National Library of Medicine data base was performed of studies published from January 1966 to March 1994. Clinical trials assessing effects on lipids and lipoproteins, and adverse effects of marketed lipid-lowering agents were extracted. Reviews and other relevant articles were included if they provided information regarding lipid and lipoprotein metabolism or guidelines on the treatment of dyslipidemias in patients with diabetes mellitus. An extensive review of clofibrate was not included. The most common dyslipidemia in patients with poorly controlled insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) is combined elevated triglyceride and cholesterol levels, with reduced high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (mixed hyperlipidemia). Hypertriglyceridemia combined with a reduced HDL cholesterol is the most common dyslipidemia in patients with noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, but essentially any pattern of dyslipidemia may be present. Small and dense low-density lipoprotein (LDL), glycosylation of lipoproteins, and increased oxidized lipoproteins may be present in patients with diabetes mellitus; all contribute to accelerated atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Insulin therapy generally corrects quantitative lipid abnormalities in patients with IDDM, so drug treatment is seldom indicated. Diet, exercise, and insulin or oral sulfonylureas will improve hypertriglyceridemia and low HDL concentrations, but do not always return them to normal. Drug therapy is indicated when nonpharmacologic measures are inadequate. It is administered based on the effects of each agent on lipids and lipoproteins, patient age, adverse effect profile, patient tolerability, and drug-disease and drug-drug interactions. A fibric acid derivative is the drug of choice for marked hypertriglyceridemia in patients with diabetes mellitus. Niacin can worsen glycemic control, but it may be required in severe hypertriglyceridemia, hypercholesterolemia, or mixed hyperlipidemia. Bile-acid binding resins may accentuate hypertriglyceridemia but may be useful in selected patients with marked hypercholesterolemia and normal triglycerides. Hydroxymethylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors are preferred in patients with elevated LDL cholesterol and mild hypertriglyceridemia. Patients with marked lipid abnormalities or mixed hyperlipidemias may require carefully dosed combinations of lipid-lowering drugs.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Although some laboratory findings are known to be indicators of the risk of giant coronary aneurysm formation among Kawasaki disease patients, an appropriate cut-off point to predict aneurysm formation is not clear. METHODS: One hundred and five patients with giant coronary aneurysms were selected from the 15th and 16th nationwide surveys of Kawasaki disease in Japan. A total of 2936 patients without Kawasaki disease were recruited from a single hospital as a control group. Odds ratios were calculated for six laboratory data with specific values as cut-off points. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were observed to determine the most appropriate laboratory tests and cut-off points. RESULTS: Hematocrit, leukocyte count, neutrophil proportion, and hemoglobin had one or more peaks of odds ratio for specific cut-off points, but they did not have a clear cut-off point for the predictor according to the receiver operating characteristic curves. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) increased the risk of giant coronary aneurysms continuously so no clearly appropriate cut-off point was identified. Serum sodium concentration of 135 mEq/L had a peak of odds ratio, and those with <135 mEq/L had the highest odds ratio (4.78). This value seemed appropriate with a sensitivity of 78% and specificity of 57%, although the predictive positive value was as small as 5%. CONCLUSION: The author's propose that a serum sodium concentration of <135 mEq/L at the patient's first visit to hospital may be a predictor of giant coronary aneurysms due to Kawasaki disease.  相似文献

Primary tissue failure of bioprosthetic heart valves refers primarily to calcification of the leaflets of the bioprosthesis. A 75 year old patient underwent reoperation 15 years after mitral valve replacement with a Carpentier-Edwards porcine bioprosthesis. The extracted bioprosthetic valve was found to have one prolapsed leaflet and a small amount of calcification on all three leaflets without tear or perforation. The two commissures suspending the prolapsed leaflet were detached, causing mitral valve regurgitation.  相似文献

 We discuss the usefulness of the Cosgrove-Edwards ring from our early clinical results from 25 rings in 24 patients who underwent mitral annuloplasty (MAP) or tricuspid annuloplasty (TAP) between June 1999 and December 2000. In the MAP group, the posterior mitral annulus between the anterior and posterior fibrous trigones was reinforced with the prosthetic ring. In the TAP group, the annuli of the anterior and posterior leaflets were splinted with the ring. The prosthetic ring was attached by pledgeted U-sutures. Cardiologists performed echocardiography pre- and postoperatively. Thirteen of the 14 in the MAP group showed mitral valve regurgitation of grade 0 or I. Six of the 11 in the TAP group showed tricuspid regurgitation of grade 0 or I, and 5 patients with regurgitation equal to or greater than grade II who remained in atrial fibrillation postoperatively recovered without further clinical symptoms. No patient has required reoperation during a follow-up period of up to 2 years. Cosgrove-Edwards ring-related complications, such as valve stenosis, ring detachment, and arrhythmia, have been not recognized in these patients. In conclusion, for mitral and tricuspid annuloplasty, the Cosgrove-Edwards prosthetic ring showed excellent early clinical results, particularly in patients maintained in sinus rhythm. Dendritic cells (DC) are the most potent antigen-presenting cells that regulate immune responses. One of the mechanisms for hepatitis C virus (HCV) persistence is the ability of HCV to suppress DC function. Direct HCV infection to blood DC has been implicated for DC dysfunction. To clarify the susceptibility of each DC subset to HCV, we used pseudotype vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) coated with chimeric HCV envelope glycoproteins (E1 and E2). We demonstrate that pseudotype VSV enters myeloid DC (MDC) but not plasmacytoid DC (PDC). The highest efficiency of pseudotype VSV entry to MDC was observed when MDC were cultured with GM-CSF. Such efficiency decreased when MDC are matured with the treatment of IL-4, CpG oligodeoxynucleotide, or CD40 ligand. Mannan inhibited pseudotype VSV entry to MDC, but Ca(2+) chelators failed to do so. These results show that pseudotype VSV possessing HCV-E1 and E2 enters immature MDC through the interaction with lectins in a Ca(2+)-independent manner.  相似文献

Examination by scanning electron microscopy revealed differences between neuromuscular junctions in the muscle fibers of the zebra finch (bird) and rat. The neuromuscular junctions between the anterior and posterior latissimus dorsi muscles of the zebra finch were compared. The junctions of the former, exclusively slow tonic fibers, were small and numerous along the long axis of a single muscle fiber. The synaptic depressions per junction were few. The junctions of the latter, exclusively fast twitch fibers, were large and consisted of more synaptic depressions than the former. Junctional folds were occasionally found in some depressions. The neuromuscular junctions between the extensor digitorum longus and soleus muscles of the rat were also compared. The former consisted almost entirely of fast twitch muscle fibers, whereas the latter consisted of both slow twitch fibers (75%) and fast twitch fibers (25%). The junctions in the extensor digitorum longus muscle were almost all labyrinthine gutters containing exclusively slit-like junctional folds. In the soleus muscle, two types of junctions were observed. One type was similar to that of the extensor digitorum longus muscle; the other was characterized by labyrinthine gutters containing sparse, narrow slit-like and pit-like junctional folds. We suggest from these structural differences of the subneural apparatuses that the junction of the fast twitch muscle is characterized by the subneural apparatus containing numerous slit-like junctional folds, and that of the slow twitch muscle fiber characterized by the apparatus containing sparse, narrow slit-like and pit-like junctional folds.  相似文献
