Possibilities and outlook for wrist joint endoprosthesis

On the basis of his experience with the treatment of 23 patients with diseases and sequellae of injuries the author has determined indications for endoprosthesis in the wrist joint. Butakryl, protokryl or silicon rubber are recommended as a material for endoprosthesis. Good long-term results were obtained in 23 patients subjected to operation.     

Two-step carcinogenesis induced by neonatal exposure to 5-bromo-2'- deoxyuridine and subsequent administration of urethan in BALB/c mice.

Male and female BALB/c mice were exposed to subcutaneous injections of 1 mg 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdUrd) at the 1st, 3rd and 7th days after their birth and/or starting from 3 months of age, and every third day were given 5 intraperitoneal injections of 0.1 ml of 5% solution of urethan. Treatment with BrdUrd alone followed by delay in mice development, reduction of the body and liver weight did not significantly increase the incidence of tumor development at 9 months of age. Exposure to both BrdUrd and urethan lead to summation or potentiation of their effects, manifested in increased lung adenoma incidence and their number per tumor-bearing mouse. In males, which received BrdUrd and urethan a significant increase in lung adenocarcinomas and haemoblastosis was observed in comparison to other groups. It was suggested that genome instability induced by exposure to BrdUrd facilitate the realization of the carcinogenic effect of urethan.     

Early Resistance to experimental plague in animals immunized with recombinant plague vaccine

The protective properties of recombinantSalmonella minnesota R595/pFS1 strain soon after immunization (1–3 days) are studied in a model of experimental mouse plague. Unlike the commercial EV strainYersinia pestis vaccine produced at the Saratov Anti-Plague Institute (Mikrob Research-Manufacturing Conglomerate), the experimental recombinant p preparation affords a high level of protection from the 1st day postvaccination, and surpasses the commercial preparation in such parameters as LD₅₀, mean survival time, and percentage of survivors. Interaction between bradykinin,morphine, and naloxone at the sensomotor cortical unit level

The effects of bradykinin, morphine, and naloxone applied by microiontophoresis on sensomotor cortical neurons were studied in waking rabbits. Bradykinin increased the discharge frequency of most neurons. Morphine inhibited unit activity. Against the background of morphine, bradykinin had no activating action. Naloxone abolished the depriming effect of morphine and restored the response of the neurons to bradykinin. It is concluded that bradykinin interacts with opiate receptors in the brain.Laboratory of Molecular Neurophysiology and Biochemistry, P. K. Geroprotective effect of Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly peptide in male rats exposed to different illumination regimens

Exposure of male rats to permanent or natural illumination of North-Western Russia accelerated their death in comparison with animals exposed to standard (12 h) light. Permanent illumination promoted the development of spontaneous tumors in comparison with the standard photoregimen. Injection of epithalone (synthetic Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly peptide; subcutaneously 0.1 μg/rat 5 times a week from the age of 4 months until natural death) virtually did not change the mean lifespan of male rats, but was associated with a significant (p<0.05) normalization of population aging rate and hence, time of mortality rate doubling in groups exposed to natural or constant illumination.
