Hypertension after extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) has been a controversial subject. Changes in blood pressure were studied in 262 patients (mean age 47.8 years) 18.6 months after ESWL. According to World Health Organization criteria the number of patients who showed a decrease exceeded those who showed an increase in blood pressure. The patients who have been on antihypertensive therapy showed a significantly greater decrease in blood pressure than those without medication. Of 192 normotensive patients diastolic pressure increased 1.2 mm. Hg and 2 (1.0%) had hypertension 18.4 months after ESWL. Annualized increase in diastolic pressure and new onset of hypertension were calculated to be 0.78 mm. Hg and 0.65%, respectively. Significant elevation of diastolic pressure was noted in the patients who received a larger number of shock waves. Blood pressure should be carefully followed after ESWL especially in patients who have been treated by a greater number of shock waves.  相似文献

The effects of electrical stimulation of ventral subiculum (VSB) of the hippocampus of the thermosensitive neurons in the preoptic area were studied in urethane-anesthetized rats. VSB stimulation affected thermosensitive neurons more frequently (92.1%, 58 of 63) than thermally insensitive neurons (71.4%, 55 of 77). The majority of the VSB-responsive thermosensitive neurons (33 of 44 warm-units and 11 of 14 cold-units) were initially inhibited following stimulation. The result provides further support for the involvement of hippocampus in the central control of thermoregulation.  相似文献

Ubiquitin is thought to be a stress protein that plays an important role in protecting cells under stress conditions; however, its precise role is unclear. Ubiquitin expression level is controlled by the balance of ubiquitinating and deubiquitinating enzymes. To investigate the function of deubiquitinating enzymes on ischemia-induced neural cell apoptosis in vivo, we analyzed gracile axonal dystrophy (gad) mice with an exon deletion for ubiquitin carboxy terminal hydrolase-L1 (UCH-L1), a neuron-specific deubiquitinating enzyme. In wild-type mouse retina, light stimuli and ischemic retinal injury induced strong ubiquitin expression in the inner retina, and its expression pattern was similar to that of UCH-L1. On the other hand, gad mice showed reduced ubiquitin induction after light stimuli and ischemia, whereas expression levels of antiapoptotic (Bcl-2 and XIAP) and prosurvival (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) proteins that are normally degraded by an ubiquitin-proteasome pathway were significantly higher. Consistently, ischemia-induced caspase activity and neural cell apoptosis were suppressed approximately 70% in gad mice. These results demonstrate that UCH-L1 is involved in ubiquitin expression after stress stimuli, but excessive ubiquitin induction following ischemic injury may rather lead to neural cell apoptosis in vivo.  相似文献

Crystalline chitosan was prepared from crab tendon consisting mainly of chitin, including various proteins and calcium phosphates. The crab tendon has high mechanical properties due to its aligned molecular structure. Crab tendon components, i.e. proteins and calcium phosphates, were removed by deacetyl treatment using 50wt% NaOH aqueous solution at 100 degrees C, and a subsequent ethanol treatment. As judged from microscopic observations using an optical polarizer, the treated chitosan remained intact regarding its aligned molecular structure, and had a high tensile strength of 67.9+/-11.4MPa. The tensile strength was further enhanced to 235+/-30MPa by a thermal treatment at 120 degrees C, corresponding to the formation of the intermolecular hydrogen bonds.  相似文献

Effects of focus on a target word during performance of the reading span test (RST) were investigated. A focus word in the sentence was defined as the most critical word with a core meaning to integrate the sentence. Two kinds of RST were compared. One was focus-RST (F-RST) in which the target word to be maintained was a focus word of the sentence. The other was a non-focus-RST (NF-RST) in which the target word was not a focus word of the sentence, although the sentence did contain a focus word. Results showed that RST scores were found to be higher for F-RST than for NF-RST. Moreover, the effect of focus was proved to be dominant for low span subjects. Intrusion errors also increased in NF-RST. Sentence length effect, however, was not found. The results showed that low span subjects had severe deficits in making and updating the focus, which is critical for sentence comprehension.  相似文献

With the use of power spectral analysis, the occipital and frontal EEGs in normal young subjects were examined during mental activity under closed-eye and open-eye conditions. Under the closed-eye condition, the peak of power spectral density in the alpha band was suppressed during mental activity, as compared with the finding obtained without mental loading. Moreover, the peak frequency of the alpha band shifted to higher frequencies under the mental loading condition in all of the subjects. Under the open-eye condition, alpha waves were prominently suppressed and no peak of power spectral density in the alpha band could be detected. However, during mental activity the peak of power spectral density could be detected in the delta wave band of both occipital and frontal EEGs.  相似文献

The present study addressed the relationship between an individual difference in the reading span test (RST) and the performance in text comprehension with respect to storage and retrieval systems. In Experiment 1, an effect of the serial recall task on performance in text comprehension was compared between high and low RST score groups. In Experiment 2, an effect of the word fluency task on performance in text comprehension of two groups was investigated. The results of both experiments showed that the performance in text comprehension of the low RST score group was impaired when the serial recall task was the secondary task; in contrast, the performance of the high RST score group was influenced when the word fluency task was used. The results suggested that the high RST score group comprehended text not only by using a temporary storage system but also by using a retrieval system efficiently.  相似文献

Over the past 25 years and more, very few statistically reliable evaluations dealing with clinicopathologic features of patients with insulinoma and/or hypoglycemic syndrome (HGS), including recently popularized diagnostic modalities, have been published. The aims of this study are threefold: first, to evaluate the clinicopathologic features of patients with insulinoma/HGS from various viewpoints; secondly, to update our knowledge about this subject which has been retained up to date, and thirdly to supply reliable information to investigators working in the specialized field of gut-pancreatic endocrinomas. We collected data from literature on a total of 1085 Japanese patients with insulinoma/HGS and undertook a statistical evaluation. The results are summarized as follows. 1) Association of HGS was recognized in 88.4% of the 1085 patients. 2) Islet B-cell hyperplasia/nesidioblatosis was found in 4.1%; 2.6% in association with insulinoma and 1.6% without it. 3) Patients with small tumors of 20 mm or less comprised 81.1%. 4) The overall rate of metastases was 6.6% (72 patients) and that of malignancy 13.6% (148 patients). 5) Multisecretors immunohistochemically proved were found in 32.4% and multiplicity of tumor growth in 12.6%. 6) The 10-year survival rate after removal of lesions was 90.5% overall; 98.4% in patients with benign lesions and 75.7% in those with malignant tumors. It is expected that the results obtained in the present study will provide extensive and useful information for future investigation.  相似文献

An ischemic myocardial region contains cells with a depolarized resting membrane potential. This depolarization leads to an intercellular current flow between the ischemic region and the surrounding normal myocardial cells, which has been termed an "injury current." We have devised an experimental model system in which an isolated rabbit ventricular cell is electrically coupled to a model depolarized cell to evaluate the effects of this injury current on the electrical properties of a normal ventricular cell. We found that the action potential duration of the isolated cell could be reversibly altered by varying the coupling resistance such that the action potential duration was shortened by high values of coupling resistance but could be considerably prolonged by lower resistance coupling. We did not observe automaticity in the isolated cell as a consequence of coupling to the depolarized model. The changes in action potential duration were accompanied by alterations in the frequency at which the isolated cell could respond to repetitive stimuli. In addition, the depolarization of the isolated cell produced by the electrical coupling led to a significant increase in the cellular excitability. This last effect may be of particular importance in understanding the mechanisms for origination of arrhythmias in the border zone of myocardial ischemia.  相似文献

Sepsis is often associated with a downward spiral through a spectrum of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) culminating in organ failure and death. Here we present a 3-year-old girl with Hemophilus influenzae septic meningitis who developed SIRS and acute renal failure. In the initial stage, the patient showed uremia, cytopenia, disseminated intravascular coagulation, elevation of tissue enzyme and ferritin values, hemophagocytosis and overproduction of nitric oxide. The serum cytokine profile revealed increased levels of soluble interleukin (IL)-2 receptor, IL-6, IL-10 and tumor necrosis factor alpha. The patient responded positively to early and intensive interventions including antibiotics, repeated exchange transfusions, dexamethasone and high-dose gamma-globulin. The above laboratory abnormalities almost normalized with clinical improvement. We consider that SIRS was probably responsible for the sequence of events resulting in renal failure in this case, and suggest that renal failure should be included among the serious complications of SIRS associated with Hemophilus influenzae septic meningitis.  相似文献
