Atherosclerosis is characterized by accumulation of lipids and inflammatory cells in the arterial wall. Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) plays important role in the genesis and progression of atheromatous plaque. Various scavenger receptors have been recognized in the past two decades that mediate uptake of ox-LDL leading to formation of foam cells. Inhibition of scavenger receptor A and CD36 has been shown to affect progression of atherosclerosis by decreasing foam cell formation. Lectin-type oxidized LDL receptor 1 (LOX-1) participates at various steps involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, and in experimental studies its blockade has been shown to affect the progression of atherosclerosis at multiple levels. In this review, we summarize the role of ox-LDL and scavenger receptors in the formation of atheroma with emphasis on effects of LOX-1 blockade.  相似文献

Bats have been recognized as an exceptional viral reservoir, especially for coronaviruses. At least three bat zoonotic coronaviruses (SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2) have been shown to cause severe diseases in humans and it is expected more will emerge. One of the major features of CoVs is that they are all highly prone to recombination. An extreme example is the insertion of the P10 gene from reoviruses in the bat CoV GCCDC1, first discovered in Rousettus leschenaultii bats in China. Here, we report the detection of GCCDC1 in four different bat species (Eonycteris spelaea, Cynopterus sphinx, Rhinolophus shameli and Rousettus sp.) in Cambodia. This finding demonstrates a much broader geographic and bat species range for this virus and indicates common cross-species transmission. Interestingly, one of the bat samples showed a co-infection with an Alpha CoV most closely related to RsYN14, a virus recently discovered in the same genus (Rhinolophus) of bat in Yunnan, China, 2020. Taken together, our latest findings highlight the need to conduct active surveillance in bats to assess the risk of emerging CoVs, especially in Southeast Asia.  相似文献

Metered dose inhaler (MDI) with spacer is the preferred method for administration of aerosolized medications in pediatric asthma. The expense of commercial spacers limits their use and indigenous alternatives have therefore been developed. Information on the clinical efficacy of home-made spacers is limited. This study was conducted to compare the efficacy of a valve-less home-made spacer with a commercial spacer in delivering salbutamolvia MDI in acute asthma. Asthmatic children aged 5–15 years who presented with an acute exacerbation to the pediatric chest clinic of a tertiary care hospital were enrolled in a single blinded randomized parallel group study. The study patients received 10 puffs of salbutamol (100(igJ puff)via MDI-home-made spacer or MDI-commercial spacer. Pre and post inhalation measurements of peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR), oxygen saturation (SaO2), respiratory rate (RR), pulse rate (PR) were made and compared. Sixty children were enrolled in the study, 31 were administered salbutamolvia the home-made spacer and 29via the commercial spacer. The median increase in PEFR was similar in both the groups (20.8% vs22.2%, p=0.4), clinical improvement being satisfactory in all patients. The valve-less home-made spacer is equally efficacious and cheaper than the commercial spacer in administering bronchodilators in acute exacerbations of asthma. Further studies on the efficacy of home-made spacer in delivery of inhaled steroids are needed.  相似文献

In order to elucidate the toxin composition of the freshwater puffer in Bangladesh, about 230 specimens of Tetraodon sp. were collected from 1997 to 1999 and extracted. After partitioning the toxins between an aqueous layer and a 1-butanol layer, the toxin in the aqueous layer was characterized as paralytic shellfish poison (PSP) (data not shown), while the toxin in the 1-butanol layer was identified as palytoxin (PTX) or PTX-like substance based on the delayed haemolytic activity which was inhibited by an anti-PTX antibody and ouabain (g-strophanthin). This is the first report on the occurrence of PTX or PTX-like substance(s) in puffer fish.  相似文献

Here, the wavelet analysis has been investigated to improve the quality of myoelectric signal before use in prosthetic design. Effective Surface Electromyogram (SEMG) signals were estimated by first decomposing the obtained signal using wavelet transform and then analysing the decomposed coefficients by threshold methods. With the appropriate choice of wavelet, it is possible to reduce interference noise effectively in the SEMG signal. However, the most effective wavelet for SEMG denoising is chosen by calculating the root mean square value and signal power values. The combined results of root mean square value and signal power shows that wavelet db4 performs the best denoising among the wavelets. Furthermore, time domain and frequency domain methods were applied for SEMG signal analysis to investigate the effect of muscle-force contraction on the signal. It was found that, during sustained contractions, the mean frequency (MNF) and median frequency (MDF) increase as muscle force levels increase.  相似文献

PurposeAnaerobic infections are common yet life-threatening. They are being recovered from all sites of the body, including the cardiovascular system. This study was aimed to determine the retrospective analysis on the isolation of anaerobes in cardiovascular samples received for a decade-long duration. It helps in knowing the frequency of isolation of anaerobic causes of cardiovascular infection.MethodsAll cardiovascular samples from the department of Cardio-thoracic vascular surgery from January 2010 to December 2020 were studied.ResultsOf 601 samples received, predominant samples were vegetations and valvular tissues of 258, followed by 98 samples of pericardial tissues, 92 samples of embolus, 90 samples of blood and post-operative collections, and 63 excised aneurysms and vascular grafts. Of the total, 15 samples grew anaerobes where Clostridium species were the predominant isolates. Clostridioides difficile was isolated in 2 samples.ConclusionsAnaerobes in cardiovascular samples are uncommon yet form a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Most infections are from the contiguous spread, penetrating trauma, and hematogenous causing endocarditis or valvular infections. These conditions and samples form the seat of infectious focus and clinical suspicion towards the anaerobic cause of these conditions, especially in conventional routine culture-negative samples. Timely diagnosis of anaerobic infections plays a vital role in the good prognostic outcome of patients undergoing cardiothoracic and vascular surgery.  相似文献

Neuroschistosomiasis is an uncommonly reported disease.

Case characteristics

An adolescent Indian boy residing in Kenya presented with headache, visual symptoms and seizures, with MRI showing space-occupying lesions in the occipital lobe and cerebellum.

Observation

Brain biopsy was diagnostic of neuro-schistosomiasis; complete recovery was seen with praziquantel and corticosteroid therapy.

Message

This case highlights the importance of considering epidemiology in differential diagnosis and establishing definitive diagnosis even if it is by invasive methods.

Tetrodotoxin (TTX) was localized as brown color in different tissues of an undescribed species of the nemertean genus Cephalothrix (phylum Nemertea) and a turbellarian Planocera reticulata (phylum Platyhelminthes) on light microscopy by means of a monoclonal anti-TTX antibody. In the Cephalothrix sp., TTX was recognized in the vesicles apically arranged in the bacillary cells in the epidermis, basal lamina, the granular cells in the proboscis epithelium, rhynchocoel epithelium, and the vesicles in the basal portion of the intestinal wall near the blood vessels and rhynchocoel. The excretory system and the ovum also showed positive reaction of TTX antigen-antibody. On the other hand, the hermaphrodite flatworm P. reticulata exhibited TTX antigen-antibody complex only in their ovum. To our knowledge, this is the first experimental effort on micro-distribution of TTX in invertebrates.  相似文献

Conservation of the fishing cat, a threatened south-east Asian felid, could benefit from effective ex situ genetic management and breeding programmes, including the use of assisted reproduction. The aims of the present study were to: (1) characterise basal seminal traits of fishing cats in Thailand zoos; and (2) investigate the effect of cryopreservation on sperm motility, acrosomal integrity and in vitro function. Seminal traits were evaluated in electroejaculates collected from eight males. Spermatozoa were diluted in n-tris(hydroxymethyl)-methyl-2-aminoethanesulfonic acid Tris (TEST)-yolk buffer (TYB) without glycerol, then diluted further with TYB with glycerol (4% final concentration) at either 25 degrees C or after slow cooling to 5 degrees C and frozen in straws over liquid nitrogen vapour. After thawing, sperm function was assessed by insemination of viable domestic cat oocytes. Fishing cat ejaculates averaged (+/- s.e.m.) 43.6 +/- 14.2 x 10(6) motile spermatozoa with 33.5 +/- 6.8% normal sperm morphology. Semen processing had a negligible effect (P > 0.05) on sperm motility and acrosomal integrity, but values were reduced (P < 0.05) after thawing. All thawed samples fertilised domestic cat oocytes, with 62.1% (36/58) of mature oocytes cleaving. Glycerol addition at 5 degrees C resulted in higher (P < 0.05) post-thaw motility and intact acrosomes than glycerol addition at 25 degrees C. In conclusion, good-quality ejaculates can be obtained from Thai fishing cats and their spermatozoa exhibit adequate function after cryopreservation for in vitro fertilisation procedures.  相似文献
