Pediatric intracranial aneurysms—clinical characteristics and outcome of surgical treatment

Object Intracranial aneurysms are rare in children and have different epidemiological, clinical, and morphological characteristics and outcome from those in adults. Materials and methods We analyzed demographic, clinical, radiologic features, treatment, and outcome in 55 patients <18 years of age, treated from Jan 1995 through December 2005. Results Intracranial aneurysms in children below 18 years constituted 4% of all intracranial aneurysms. Internal Carotid artery (ICA) bifurcation was the commonest location. About half of the aneurysms were complex. Three-fourth of the patients required surgical treatment. Two patients died, constituting 5% mortality. Two patients (5%) had poor outcome, whereas the majority (90%) had a favorable outcome. Conclusions Pediatric aneurysms have male predominance, higher incidence of clinical features of mass effect or seizures, high incidence of large, traumatic/mycotic aneurysms, associated illnesses and ICH/IVH and hydrocephalus, better Hunt and Hess grades at presentation, ICA bifurcation as the commonest site, and better outcome than their adult counterparts.     

Betropharyngeal abscesses: Revisited

Retropharyngeal abscesses were fairly common in preantibiotic era but the advent of antibiotics has reduced the overall incidence of these abscesses. They still continue to occur specially in developing world and carry significant morbidity and even mortality if not managed properly. The prevalence of this abscess in the young children pose a bigger challenge, as the examination of oral cavity is difficult. Emphasis is placed on the age, sex, type, and duration of symptoms, bacteriology, methodology of diagnosis, therapy and complications. With proper antibiotic cover and surgical management, majority of patients today survive without major residual squeal. Hereby we present a series of 15 cases of retropharyngeal abscess.     

Polymerisation by the chromate/arsenite system

The aqueous polymerisation of methyl methacrylate initiated by the chromate/arsenite system has been studied. It is observed that the polymerisation by the above redox system is catalysed by OH^? though the parent reaction between chromate and arsenite is catalysed by H^⊕. It is also observed that traces of Cu^2⊕ inhibit both the polymerization reaction as also the parent reaction. From these observations it is concluded (1) intermediate valency states of chromium has no initiating power in alkali solution and (2) the redox reaction between chromate and arsenite is a chain reaction involving single electron transfer and the intermediate As^4⊕ thus produced is the initiating species.     

Bacteremia due to Rhodococcus equi--a case report
