Stress and sulfite can stimulate numerous pathways leading to an increased production of free radicals which generate a peroxidation cascade producing lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation, DNA damage and cell death, and contribute to the occurrence of pathologic conditions. The purpose of our study was to investigate the effects of stress and sulfite on visual evoked potentials (VEPs) and to examine the relationship between lipid peroxidation and VEP changes. Forty male wistar rats, aged three months were used. They were equally divided into four groups: control (C), the group exposed to restraint stress (R), the group treated with sulfite (S) and the group exposed to stress and treated with sulfite (RS). Chronic restraint stress was applied for 21 days (1h/day) and sodium metabisulfite (520 mg/kg/day) was given by gavage for the same period. All latencies of VEP components were prolonged in the R, S and RS groups with respect to the C group. Brain and retina TBARS levels were found to be increased in those groups compared to the C group. Our results strongly suggest that the latency prolongations of all VEP components may have resulted from the enhancement of lipid peroxidation. Correlation analysis between brain and retina TBARS levels and VEP latencies also support this conclusion. Our data in regard to latency prolongations of all VEP components in the stress group exposed to sulfite, reflected an additive effect of sulfite toxicity on VEP components. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of chronic restraint stress and alpha-lipoic acid (LA) administration on lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzyme activities in rat peripheral organs. METHODS: Forty male wistar rats, aged 3 months were randomized to one of the following groups: control, restraint stress, LA treated and restraint stress+LA treated. Chronic restraint stress was applied for 21 days (1h/day) and LA (100 mg/kg/day) was administered intraperitoneally for the same period. RESULTS: Restraint stress had no statistically significant effect on lipid peroxidation, copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity in rat liver and heart, when compared to the control group. Lipid peroxidation, determined by measuring malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, was found to be increased in the kidney of restraint stress treated rats, compared to controls. Restraint stress-induced lipid peroxidation in the kidney was significantly decreased via LA treatment. Administration of LA also enhanced GPx and decreased Cu/Zn SOD activity in rat kidney, liver and heart, compared to the control group. CONCLUSIONS: The presented data shows that LA is a protective agent against restraint stress--the inducer of lipid peroxidation in the kidney. These findings also suggest that LA-induced changes in antioxidant enzyme activities in rat peripheral organs may contribute to their versatile effects observed in vivo. 相似文献

Patterns of motor branching of the musculocutaneous nerve in human fetuses and clinical significance
The purpose of this morphologic study is to investigate the course and the branching pattern of motor branches of musculocutaneous nerve (MCN) in human fetuses. Twenty upper limbs (10 right, 10 left) of spontaneously aborted formalin-fixed fetuses were dissected under a stereomicroscope to determine motor branches for the biceps brachii and brachialis and the communicating branches between the MCN and median nerve (MN). The MCN entered the proximal and middle part of coracobrachialis in 13/20 and 5/20 of arms, respectively, and the remaining 2/20 did not pierce coracobrachialis. The communication between MCN and MN was observed in 5/20 of the arms and detected only in the distal part of the coracobrachialis. The most frequently observed innervation is the type wherein a single branch to biceps brachii, which bifurcated for supplying the short and long heads (12/20). For the innervation of brachialis, the most frequent type was a single branch from the main trunk of the MCN (15/20). During the dissections, the distance between the acromion and the emerging point of the motor branches was measured. The mean distance between the acromion and the emerging point of the all motor branches for biceps brachii in all types of specimens was 33.8 ± 6.1% of acromion-lateral epicondyle length and for brachialis was 50.6 ± 11.5% of acromion-lateral epicondyle length. The data of the MCN variations in the human fetus may be useful for the clinicians and pediatric surgery. 相似文献

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) on visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in a one kidney-one clip (1K-1C) hypertension model in rats. METHODS: Five experimental groups were formed: a control group, a sham group, a group supplemented with DHA, a 1K-1C group, and a 1K-1C + DHA group. The DHA groups were treated for 60 days. In the 1K-1C groups, the right kidney was removed and a silver clip with a 0.2-mm gap was placed on the left renal artery. RESULTS: The DHA-supplemented rats had lower blood pressure than their respective controls (p < 0.01). The increased brain and retina thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels in hypertensive rats were abolished by DHA administration. The brain nitrite levels were lower in the DHA, 1K-1C and 1K-1C + DHA groups compared with the control group (p < 0.01), and the retina nitrite level was higher in the 1K-1C + DHA group compared with the DHA and 1K-1C groups (p < 0.01). There was an improvement of P(2), N(2) and P(3) components following DHA supplementation in 1K-1C hypertensive rats compared with the 1K-1C group. CONCLUSION: The present study suggests that DHA supplementation has the potential to prevent VEP changes caused by an experimental model of hypertension. Sulfites, which are commonly used as preservatives, are continuously formed in the body during metabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids. Sulfite is oxidized to sulfate ion by sulfite oxidase (SOX, EC. 1.8.3.1). The aim of this study was to investigate the possible toxic effects of sulfite on neurons by measuring active avoidance learning in normal and SOX-deficient rats. For this purpose, male albino rats used in this study were divided into eight groups such as control group (C), sulfite group (25 mg/kg) (S), vitamin E group (50 mg/kg) (E), sulfite (25 mg/kg)+vitamin E group (50 mg/kg) (SE), SOX-deficient group (D), deficient+vitamin E group (50 mg/kg) (DE), deficient+sulfite group (25 mg/kg) (DS) and deficient+sulfite (25 mg/kg)+vitamin E group (50 mg/kg) (DSE). Sulfite-induced impairment of active avoidance learning in SOX-deficient rats but not in normal rats. Sulfite had no effect on hippocampus TBARS levels in SOX normal groups. In SOX-deficient rats, TBARS levels were found to be significantly increased with sulfite exposure. Vitamin E reversed the observed detrimental effects of sulfite in the SOX-deficient rats on their hippocampal TBARS but not on their active avoidance learning. In conclusion, sulfite has neurotoxic effects in sulfite oxidase deficient rats, but this effect may not depend on oxidative stress. 相似文献
