Mandibulofacial dysostosis (Treacher Collins Syndrome) is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder that probably derives from inhibition of the facial structures from the first and second branchial arches. The facial pattern of the syndrome is a convex facial profile with a prominent nose above a retruded chin. The eyes are deformed by antimongoloid slant of the palpebral fissures and facial bones are hypoplastic. The alterations are caused by mutation in gene 5q32-33.1, which encodes the nucleolar phosphoprotein treacle. Computed tomography images are able to demonstrate craniofacial bones, allowing the morphological analysis of these bones in individuals with complex deformities. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of a clinical and computed tomography investigation of two patients with Treacher Collins syndrome.  相似文献

PURPOSE: Postoperative variables such as pain, swelling, and trismus after surgery of the impacted lower third molars are the main concerns of dental clinicians and surgeons. Many authors claim that the use of a drain could help control these variables. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the use of a tube drain in impacted lower third molar surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-three patients of both genders with bilateral impacted lower third molars comprised our comparative study. The patients were divided into 2 groups: in the first the suture procedure was accomplished using a drain, and in the second the suture procedure was accomplished without a drain. The postoperative pain, swelling, and trismus were evaluated at 24 hours, 72 hours, 7 days, and 15 days. RESULTS: In the group in which the drain was used, the control of the swelling variable was statistically significant at 24 and 72 hours (P <.001) in comparison with the group in which the drain was not used. However, pain and trismus were not statistically significant at the evaluation period. CONCLUSION: The use of the drain helps to control swelling. However, it had no effect on pain or trismus.  相似文献

The distributions of the different genotypes of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) and GBV-C virus (GBV-C/HGV) vary geographically and information worldwide is still incomplete. In particular, there are few data on the distribution of genotypes (and their relationship to the severity of liver disease) in South America. Findings are described in 114 consecutive patients from Northeast Brazil (median age 52 years, range 18-72 years) who had abnormal levels of serum aminotransferases and seropositivity for HCV RNA. The patients were recruited from an outpatient clinic between November 1997 and April 1998. Quantitative HCV RNA and GBV-C/HGV RNA estimations were carried out by double-nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using primers from the 5'-untranslated regions (UTRs) of the genomes. HCV genotypes were determined by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis with 5'-UTR primers and by PCR with type-specific 5'-UTR primers. GBV-C/HGV-RNA genotypes were determined by RFLP with specific 5'-UTR primers and phylogenetic trees were constructed using the Neighbour-Joining and Drawtree programs. Histological features were graded and staged according to international criteria. Of the 114 patients, 35 (30.7%) patients had cirrhosis and 22 (27.8%) had mild, 51 (64.6%) had moderate, and 6 (7.6%) had severe chronic hepatitis. Median HCV viral load was 10(6) genome equivalents per millilitre (range 10(4)-10(9)/ml). Frequencies of genotypes were 5.3% type 1a, 44.7% type 1b, 3.5% type 2, 41.2% type 3, and 5.3% mixed types. GBV-C/HGV-RNA was detected in the sera of 12 (10.5%) patients and was distributed among three phylogenetic groups. There were no significant differences between patients with the predominant HCV genotypes (1b and 3) with respect to gender, age group, viral load, severity of liver disease, or coinfection with GBV-C/HGV.  相似文献

Carbachol-induced contractions of rat stomach fundus strips, obtained in a nutrient solution containing 1.8 mM Ca2+, were resistant to Ca2+ withdrawal, even after 1 h of bathing the tissues in a nominal 0 Ca2+ solution. This was not observed when K+ was used to evoke contractions, which were rapidly inhibited after Ca2+ removal (t1/2=2 min). The effect of carbachol in 0 Ca2+ solution was reduced by using drugs that reduce intracellular pools of Ca2+, such as caffeine (1-3 mM), ryanodine (30 microM) or thapsigargin (1 microM), corroborating the involvement of intracellular Ca2+ stores. On the other hand, when the 0 Ca2+ solution contained EGTA, a complete decline of carbachol effects was observed within about 8 min, indicating the involvement of extracellular Ca2+. Atomic absorption spectrometry showed that our 0 Ca2+ solution still contained 45 microM Ca2+, which was drastically reduced to 5.9 nM in the presence of EGTA. Taken together, our results indicate that the effects of carbachol are due to the mobilization of caffeine-, ryanodine- and thapsigargin-sensitive intracellular Ca2+ stores, and that these stores are not inactivated or depleted if micromolar concentrations (45 microM), but not nanomolar concentrations (5.9 nM) of Ca2+ are maintained in the extracellular milieu.  相似文献

Presence of the cfxA gene in Bacteroides distasonis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In this study we investigated the presence of the cfxA gene (encoding a class A beta-lactamase) in 73 strains of the Bacteroides fragilis group belonging to the species B. distasonis (34), B. vulgatus (14), B. thetaiotaomicron (8), B. merdae (6), B. caccae (9) and B. ovatus (2) isolated from human intestinal microflora of healthy children and adults. Employing specific primers to the cfxA gene, a 312-bp amplified fragment was obtained in 2 strains of B. vulgatus and 9 strains, the majority from children, of B. distasonis. The expression of this enzyme was analysed by determining the MICs to cefoxitin and cefotaxime and values varied from 2 to >256 microg/ml of both cefoxitin and cefotaxime. Sequence analysis of the amplicons corresponding to the cfxA gene from B. distasonis and B. vulgatus revealed identical sequences between these isolates and high similarity with other beta-lactamase genes of anaerobes such as cfxA of B. vulgatus (99%) and cfxA2 of Prevotella intermedia (99%), both sequences of which deposited in Genbank under accession numbers U38243 and AF118110, respectively. However, a fragment obtained from a B. distasonis strain (EC17-4) showed a unique RFLP profile and 87% nucleotide similarity with cfxA and cfxA2 genes. These results seem to suggest a dissemination of these resistance determinants among Bacteroides species.  相似文献

Little is known about the sinoatrial automatism and atrioventricular conduction of trained individuals who present a normal resting electrocardiogram. We used transesophageal atrial stimulation, a minimally invasive technique, to evaluate aerobically trained athletes (n=10) and sedentary individuals (n=10) with normal resting electrocardiograms, to test the hypothesis that parasympathetic tone, as detected by heart rate variability, could be associated with changes in sinoatrial automatism and atrioventricular conduction. Corrected sinus node recovery time tended to be longer in athletes than in sedentary individuals, but this difference did not reach statistical significance. The Wenckebach point occurred at a lower rate in athletes than in the controls. Over a 24-h period of measurement, the mean RR interval was longer in the athletes than in the sedentary individuals. The mean square root of successive differences (rMSSD) tended to be higher in athletes than in controls, but this difference did not reach statistical significance. There was a moderate correlation (r=0.48, P < 0.05) between the index of atrioventricular conduction, the rate at the Wenckebach point, and the logarithmically transformed rMSSD. Thus, as a corollary to its effects on the sinus node, where increased parasympathetic tone, decreased sympathetic tone, and non-autonomic components may contribute to sinus bradycardia, it is possible that athletic training may also induce intrinsic adaptations in the conduction system, which could contribute to the higher prevalence of atrioventricular conduction abnormalities observed in athletes.
