Purpose: Injuries are one of the leading causes of death and lead to a high social and financial burden. Injury patterns can vary significantly among different age groups and body regions. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between mechanism of injury, patient comorbidities and severity of injuries.
Methods: The study included trauma patients from July 2016 to June 2018, who were admitted to Sina Hospital, Tehran, Iran. The inclusion criteria were all injured patients who had at least one of the following: hospital length of stay more than 24 h, death in hospital, and transfer from the intensive care unit of another hospital. Data collection was performed using the National Trauma Registry of Iran minimum dataset.
Results: The most common injury mechanism was road traffic injuries (49.0%), followed by falls (25.5%). The mean age of those who fell was significantly higher in comparison with other mechanisms (p < 0.001). Severe extremity injuries occurred more often in the fall group than in the vehicle collision group (69.0% vs. 43.5%, p < 0.001). Moreover, cases of severe multiple trauma were higher amongst vehicle collisions than injuries caused by falls (27.8% vs. 12.9%, p = 0.003).
Conclusion: Comparing falls with motor vehicle collisions, patients who fell were older and sustained more extremity injuries. Patients injured by motor vehicle collision were more likely to have sustained multiple trauma than those presenting with falls. Recognition of the relationship between mechanisms and consequences of injuries may lead to more effective interventions. 相似文献

Context: Scutellaria lindbergii Rech. f. (Lamiaceae) is an Iranian species of Scutellaria which has been shown to exert antimicrobial, antioxidant and cytotoxic effects. Objective: The protective properties of total methanol extract (TME) of S. lindbergii and its fractions (defatted and CH2Cl2) were investigated against cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of H2O2 in NIH 3T3 cell line as non-malignant cells. Materials and methods: The cells were incubated with different concentrations of S. lindbergii root extracts [TME (15–250?μg ml?1), defatted fraction (15–500?μg ml?1) and CH2Cl2 fraction (5–40?μg ml?1)] and toxic concentration of H2O2 (200?µM) at 37?°C for 2?h concurrently and Cell viability was quantitated by MTT assay. The antigenotoxic effect of extracts was investigated using comet assay. The cells were incubated with extracts [TME (25–250?μg ml?1), defatted fraction (25–500?μg ml?1) and CH2Cl2 fraction (5–40?μg ml?1)] and H2O2 (25?µM) at 4?°C for 20?min, then the comet assay was performed. DNA damage was expressed as percentage tail DNA. Results: Total methanol extract of S. lindbergii and its fractions had a significant inhibitory effect on DNA damage. The IC50 values of TME, defatted fraction and CH2Cl2 fraction against DNA damage were determined as 48, 138 and 8?μg ml?1, respectively. Conclusion: S. lindbergii extracts can prevent oxidative DNA damage, which is likely due to its flavonoids and phenolic compounds as antioxidant constituents. 相似文献

The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 has created a life-threatening world pandemic. Unfortunately, this disease can be worse in older patients or individuals with comorbidities, having dangerous consequences, including stroke. COVID-19–associated stroke widely increases the risk of death from COVID-19. In addition to the personal hygiene protocols and preventive policies, it has been proven that immune-compromised, oxidative, and pro-coagulant conditions make a person more susceptible to severe COVID-19 complications, such as stroke; one of the most effective and modifiable risk factors is poor nutritional status. Previous literature has shown that healthy dietary patterns, such as the Mediterranean diet, some food groups, and specific micronutrients, reduce the risk of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. In this work, for the first time, we hypothesized that a healthy diet could also be a protective/preventive factor against COVID-19–associated stroke risk. In order to prove this hypothesis, it is required to study nutritional intake and dietary patterns in patients suffering from COVID-19–associated stroke. If this hypothesis is proven, the chronic supportive role of a healthy diet in critical situations will be highlighted once again. 相似文献

Objectives: One-third of epileptic patients are resistant to antiepileptic drugs. Few clinical studies with small sample size indicate that polyunsaturated fatty acids could control drug-resistant epilepsy. We examined the efficacy of acute and chronic administration of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in two animal models of drug-resistant epilepsies, i.e. 6-Hz psychomotor seizures in mice and lamotrigine (LTG)-resistant kindled rats. Methods: Mice received a single injection of DHA (300?µM, i.c.v.) along with phenytoin (PHT) or LTG (i.p.). Six-Hz electroshock (0.2?milliseconds rectangular pulse width, 3?seconds duration, 44?mA current) was given 15 minutes after DHA, and seizure behaviors were recorded. In LTG-resistant kindled rats, a single dose of DHA (300?µM, i.c.v.) was administered with LTG, and seizure parameters were measured. In chronic treatment, mice received DHA (0.1?g/day, orally) for 30 days. Then, a single dose of LTG or PHT was administered to mice and 6-Hz-induced seizures were recorded. In rats, DHA (1?µM, i.c.v.) was administered during kindling development and effect of LTG in DHA-pretreated LTG-resistant kindled rats was verified. Results: LTG and PHT did not inhibit 6-Hz seizures in mice after single injection of DHA. However, LTG and PHT inhibited 6-Hz seizures in mice that received DHA for 1?month. Acute or chronic administration of DHA to LTG-resistant kindled rats led to the suppression of kindled seizure parameters by LTG.Discussion: DHA removes the ‘inherent resistance’ of 6-Hz seizures to PHT and LTG, and prevents the development of pharmacodynamic tolerance to LTG in LTG-resistant kindled rats. DHA might have potential to be used as add-on therapy in patients with refractory epilepsy. 相似文献

A derivative spectrophotometric method was proposed for the simultaneous determination of clindamycin and tretinoin in pharmaceutical dosage forms. The measurement was achieved using the first and second derivative signals of clindamycin at (1D) 251 nm and (2D) 239 nm and tretinoin at (1D) 364 nm and (2D) 387 nm.The proposed method showed excellent linearity at both first and second derivative order in the range of 60–1200 and 1.25–25 μg/ml for clindamycin phosphate and tretinoin respectively. The within-day and between-day precision and accuracy was in acceptable range (CV<3.81%, error<3.20%). Good agreement between the found and added concentrations indicates successful application of the proposed method for simultaneous determination of clindamycin and tretinoin in synthetic mixtures and pharmaceutical dosage form. 相似文献

Noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) are engaged in key cell biological and pathological events, and their expression alteration is connected to cancer progression both directly and indirectly. A huge number of studies have mentioned the significant role of ncRNAs in cancer prevention and therapy that make them an interesting subject for cancer therapy. However, there are several limitations, including delivery, uptake, and short half-life, in the application of ncRNAs in cancer treatment. Exosomes are introduced as promising options for the delivery of ncRNAs to the target cells. In this review, we will briefly discuss the application and barriers of ncRNAs. After that we will focus on exosome-based ncRNAs delivery and their advantages as well as the latest achievements in drugging ncRNAs with exosomes. 相似文献
