This case report describes a chondroma of the bladder in a 63-year-old woman with clinical complaints of pain in the left
fossa iliaca. The lesion was a tumour with a lobulated growth pattern composed of chondrocytes embedded in a chondroid matrix.
Neither mitotic figures nor increased cellularity were present. Nuclei were inconspicuous. Immunohistochemical examination
showed reactivity for S100 and vimentin.

Socioeconomic and cultural factors are thought to have an important role in influencing human population genetic structure. To explain such population structure differences, most studies analyse genetic differences among widely dispersed human populations. In contrast, we have studied the genetic structure of an ethnic group occupying a single village in north-eastern Ghana. We found a markedly skewed male population substructure because of an almost complete lack of male gene flow among Bimoba clans in this village. We also observed a deep male substructure within one of the clans in this village. Among all males, we observed only three Y-single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) haplogroups: E1b1a*-M2, E1b1a7a*-U174 and E1b1a8a*-U209, P277, P278. In contrast to the marked Y-chromosomal substructure, mitochondrial DNA HVS-1 sequence variation and autosomal short-tandem repeats variation patterns indicate high genetic diversities and a virtually random female-mediated gene flow among clans. On the extreme micro-geographical scale of this single Bimoba village, correspondence between the Y-chromosome lineages and clan membership could be due to the combined effects of the strict patrilocal and patrilineal structure. If translated to larger geographic scales, our results would imply that the extent of variation in uniparentally inherited genetic markers, which are typically associated with historical migration on a continental scale, could equally likely be the result of many small and different cumulative effects of social factors such as clan membership that act at a local scale. Such local scale effects should therefore be considered in genetic studies, especially those that use uniparental markers, before making inferences about human history at large. 相似文献

Inertial characteristics and dimensions of the body and body segments form an integral part of a biomechanical analysis of motion. In primate studies, however, segment inertial parameters of non-human hominoids are scarce and often obtained using varying techniques. Therefore, the principal aim of this study was to expand the existing chimpanzee inertial property data set using a non-invasive measuring technique. We also considered age- and sex-related differences within our sample. By means of a geometric model based on Crompton et al. (1996; Am J Phys Anthropol 99, 547-570) we generated inertial properties using external segment length and diameter measurements of 53 anaesthetized chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). We report absolute inertial parameters for immature and mature subjects and for males and females separately. Proportional data were computed to allow the comparison between age classes and sex classes. In addition, we calculated whole limb inertial properties and we discuss their potential biomechanical consequences. We found no significant differences between the age classes in the proportional data except for hand and foot measures where juveniles exhibit relatively longer and heavier distal segments than adults. Furthermore, most sex-related differences can be directly attributed to the higher absolute segment masses in male chimpanzees resulting in higher moments of inertia. Additionally, males tend to have longer upper limbs than females. However, regarding proportional data we discuss the general inertial properties of the chimpanzee. The described segment inertial parameters of males and females, and of the two age classes, represent a valuable data set ready for use in a range of biomechanical locomotor models. Highly efficient optical diffraction can be realized with the help of micrometer-thin liquid crystal (LC) layers with a periodic modulation of the director orientation. Electrical tunability is easily accessible due to the strong stimuli-responsiveness in the LC phase. By using well-designed photoalignment patterns at the surfaces, we experimentally stabilize two dimensional periodic LC configurations with switchable hexagonal diffraction patterns. The alignment direction follows a one-dimensional periodic rotation at both substrates, but with a 60° or 120° rotation between both grating vectors. The resulting LC configuration is studied with the help of polarizing optical microscopy images and the diffraction properties are measured as a function of the voltage. The intricate bulk director configuration is revealed with the help of finite element Q-tensor simulations. Twist conflicts induced by the surface anchoring are resolved by introducing regions with an out-of-plane tilt in the bulk. This avoids the need for singular disclinations in the structures and gives rise to voltage induced tuning without hysteretic behavior. 相似文献

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) has increasingly been associated with pulmonary disease in critically ill patients. However, the clinical relevance of HSV is still a topic of debate. Monitoring of HSV in a quantitative way could potentially give relevant information on its role in the pathogenesis of lower respiratory tract infection. A fast and reliable quantitative real-time PCR (Q-PCR) for the quantitative detection of HSV-1 and HSV-2 DNA was developed. A prospective observational study was performed in an intensive-care unit (ICU) to monitor the HSV viral load in lower respiratory tract aspirates of long-term mechanically ventilated patients. HSV was common in the lower respiratory tract (LRT) of critically ill patients with mechanical ventilation for at least 48 h (62%, n = 65/105). Detection of HSV was significantly associated with prolonged mechanical ventilation (p <0.01), prolonged ICU stay (p <0.01), and development of ventilator-associated pneumonia (p = 0.02). Corticosteroid administration (p <0.01) in the ICU and anti-HSV IgG seropositivity (p <0.01) were risk factors for the occurrence of HSV in the LRT. The fact that no HSV-seronegative patient became positive suggests that all HSV DNA-positive patients had HSV reactivations. Monitoring the HSV viral load in the LRT of critically ill patients showed a typical homogeneous pattern of HSV kinetics. HSV emerged in tracheal and bronchial aspirates after a median of 7 days of intubation (5–11 days), and this was followed by an exponential increase ( c. 1 log copies/mL/day) to reach very high HSV peaks (106 –1010 copies/mL) in 78% of the HSV DNA-positive patients. 相似文献

The in vitro N-acetylgalactosaminylation by human gastric UDP-GalNAc:polypeptide N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferases was assessed using the peptide motif GTTPSPVPTTSTTSAP, which is found naturally in the tandem repeat domains of the apomucin encoded by the gene MUC5AC. This peptide appeared to be an excellent tool for obtaining an insight into the extensive O-glycosylation processes of apomucins. Up to six N-acetylgalactosamines were added and the given glycopeptide species were well separated by capillary zone electrophoresis. Moreover, the degree of glycosylation (number of monosaccharide O-linked attachments) could be determined by MALDI-mass spectrometry without prior separation. Using different incubation times, we evidenced the accumulation of various glycopeptides, suggesting that the total glycosylation of an apomucin-peptide requires orderly N-acetylgalactosaminylation processing. This information was completed by experimental data showing that N-acetylgalactosaminylated octapeptides (the peptide backbones of which are part of GTTPSPVPTTSTTSAP) were able to selectively inhibit some N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferases. Our results suggest that this inhibition may influence the quality of the intermediate products appearing during the in vitro O-glycosylation process. 相似文献
