Universal standardization of forearm bone densitometry.

As part of an effort to quantify device-dependent differences in forearm bone density, 101 women, aged 20-80 years (approximately 16 women in each age decade), were scanned on six forearm bone densitometers: the Aloka DCS-600EX, the Hologic QDR-4500A, the Lunar PIXI, the Norland pDEXA, the Osteometer DTX-200, and the Pronosco X-posure System. Regression statistics are reported for all similar regions of interest (ROIs). However, comparisons were confounded because of large differences in the ROI size and placement. The number of ROIs reported for a single scan by each device varied from 1 to 12. The correlation coefficients ranged from 0.7 < r < 0.97, with the highest correlation coefficients and lowest SEs for comparisons between the most similar ROIs. Standardized units of bone mineral density are derived for distal (sdBMD), mid-(smBMD), and proximal (spBMD) ROTs that allow for comparable mean bone densities to be derived for patient populations. Five phantoms were scanned and characterized on five of the devices and the precision and mean values were reported. These phantom values will aid in the in vitro cross-calibration between manufacturers to recreate the presented in vivo relationships. Care should be exercised when using these equations for cross-calibrating patient databases or pooling clinical data from different devices because the least significant differences detectable from measurements taken on two different machines can be increased substantially.     

A murine TSPY

Sequences homologous to human and bovine TSPY were isolated from M. musculus testicular cDNA, and a nearly full-length gene was polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplified from mouse genomic DNA. This gene is apparently non-functional. Contrary to the situation encountered in species along the primate and artiodactyl lineages, in which TSPY is moderately repetitive, murine Tspy appears to be single copy. Murine Tspy is located on Yp, i.e. in the same syntenic group as in man. Sequence comparisons of murine, human and bovine TSPY exons suggest that TSPY became non-functional during rodent evolution.     

Identification of cyclophilin A from human decidual and placental tissue in the first trimester of pregnancy

The protein patterns of tissue homogenates from human deciduaand placenta of first trimester pregnancies were investigated.Particular attention was paid to the low molecular weight componentsof these tissues, since substantial evidence has accumulatedthat some of these smaller proteins show a characteristic cyclicand pregnancy expression. Two specific bands were purified fromhomogenates of first trimester decidua and placenta using gelfiltration and anion exchange chromatography. These bands wereseparated by gel electrophoresis and blotting onto polyvinylidendifluoridemembrane. Partial amino acid sequencing of both proteins revealedsequences identical to human cyclophilin A. One protein wassequenced V-N-P-T-V-F-F-D-I-A-V-D-G-E-P-L-G-R-(X)-S-F-E-L-F-A-D-K-V-Pand identified as the 17 kDa isoform of cyclophilin A. The otherprotein was sequenced V-N-P-T-V-F-F-D-I-A and identified asthe 18 kDa isoform of cyclophilin A. cyclophilin A/decidua/placenta/progesterone/progesterone receptor     

Capacity and Competence in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

Capacity and competence in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry are complex issues, because of the many different influences that are involved in how children and adolescents make treatment decisions within the setting of mental health. This article will examine some of the influences which must be considered, namely: developmental aspects, the paradoxical relationship between the need for autonomy and participation and the capacity of children, family psychiatry, and the duty of care towards children and adolescents. The legal frameworks relevant to consideration of consent and competence will be briefly considered, as well as some studies of children's consent, participation and competence. A case vignette will be used as a focus to consider the complexity of the issue of competence in child and adolescent psychiatry, in the particular mental disorder of anorexia nervosa.     

Spatiotemporal Patterns of Schistosomiasis-Related Deaths,Brazil, 2000–2011

We analyzed spatiotemporal patterns of 8,756 schistosomiasis-related deaths in Brazil during 2000–2011 and identified high-risk clusters of deaths, mainly in highly schistosomiasis-endemic areas along the coast of Brazil’s Northeast Region. Schistosomiasis remains a neglected public health problem with a high number of deaths in disease-endemic and emerging focal areas.
