The viscosities of a series of mixtures of glycerol and water were measured by electron spin resonance (ESR), photon correlation spectroscopy and Ostwald viscometry. Close agreement was obtained between the last two methods but viscosity as measured by ESR was always significantly lower. The difference, the magnitude of which depended on the spin probe used, was attributed to interaction between water and glycerol. Similar results were obtained using water-sorbitol and water-sucrose mixtures.  相似文献

A community-based epidemiological study of neurological disorders was performed in a rural area in Ethiopia. The most prevalent neurological disorder identified was epilepsy, found in 316 persons. The prevalence of epilepsy was 5.2/1000 inhabitants at risk, 5.8 for males, 4.6 for females. The highest age-specific prevalence was found for ages 10-19 years. Generalized tonic-clonic seizures were the most common seizure type and occurred in 81%. On clinical grounds, partial seizures occurred in 20% and in 29% of these secondary generalization followed. During seizures, 8.5% had been injured by burns and 5.7% by trauma. Eighty-four percent had seizures at least monthly. Seizures occurred in 4.8% of siblings. Traditional treatment with local herbs, holy water and amulets was the most common. Only 1.6% had been treated with recognized antiepileptic drugs. Mental retardation was the most common associated disorder, found in 7.9% of the persons with epilepsy. During a period of 2 years, 8 persons died of status epilepticus and 1 from severe burns as a result of falling into a domestic fire during a seizure. EEG was recorded in 73%. Epileptiform activity occurred in 18%.  相似文献

Acokanthera schimperi (Apocynaceae), Euclea schimperi (Ebenaceae), Inula confertiflora (Asteraceae), Melilotus elegans (Leguminosae), and Plumbago zeylanica (Plumbaginaceae), are some of the medicinal plants used in Ethiopia for treatment of various skin disorders. In this study, the antiviral activities of the 80% methanolic extracts of these plants have been examined against coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3), influenza A virus and herpes simplex virus type1 Kupka (HSV-1) using cytopathic effect (CPE) inhibitory assays in HeLa, MDCK, and GMK cells, respectively. In parallel, the cytotoxicity was quantified using a crystal violet uptake assay. The antiviral activity of the most active compound was confirmed with plaque reduction assays. The results revealed that the extracts of Acokanthera schimperi and Euclea schimperi showed antiviral activity against all three tested viruses albeit with unequal efficacy. Whereas the Acokanthera schimperi extract exhibited the strongest activity against CVB3, the extract of Euclea schimperi inhibited influenzavirus A replication most effectively. A weak anti-influenzavirus A activity was also exhibited by the other plant extracts tested. In addition, CVB3 was inhibited by the extracts of Plumbago zeylanica and HSV-1 by Inula confertiflora. Thus, the extracts of these plants, particularly those of Acokanthera schimperi, Euclea schimperi and Inula confertiflora which showed activity against CVB3 and HSV-1 support their traditional use in the treatment of skin diseases of viral origin.  相似文献

Hydroalcoholic extracts of eight species of medicinal plants, namely, Acokanthera schimperi (Apocynaceae), Calpurnia aurea (Leguminosae), Kalanchoe petitiana (Crassulaceae), Lippia adoensis (Verbenaceae), Malva parviflora (Malvaceae), Olinia rochetiana (Oliniaceae), Phytolacca dodecandra (Phytolaccaceae) and Verbascum sinaiticum (Scrophulariaceae), traditionally used in the treatment of various skin disorders were screened for antimicrobial activity against different strains of bacteria and fungi which are known to cause different types of skin infections. The tests were carried out using agar well diffusion method at three concentration levels (100, 50 and 25mg/ml) of the crude extracts. The MICs of the crude extracts of Lippia adoensis and Olinia rochetiana were determined by agar dilution method. Furthermore, the powdered leaves of Lippia adoensis and Olinia rochetiana were fractionated into different solvents of wide ranging polarity and the resulting fractions were screened for antimicrobial activity against the same organisms. Of all the plants tested, Lippia adoensis and Olinia rochetiana were found to be the most active species against bacterial and fungal strains, respectively. In addition, almost all species of plants were found to have activity on at least one microbial strain. The antimicrobial activity profile also showed that Staphylococcus aureus and Trichophyton mentagrophytes were the most susceptible bacterial and fungal strains, respectively. The results indicate the potential of these herbal drugs in treating microbial infections of the skin, thus, justifying their claimed uses in the treatment of various skin disorders, the majority of which are of infectious origin.  相似文献

Seeds of Glinus lotoides L. (Molluginaceae) are used traditionally in the treatment of tapeworm infestation in Ethiopia. Previous studies on its anthelmintic activities confirmed its traditional claims, but data on safety profile were lacking. To this effect, single and repeated dose oral toxicities of the methanolic extracts of seeds of Glinus lotoides were conducted in rats. Doses of 0, 1000 and 5000 mg/kg of crude extract of Glinus lotoides were employed in single dose toxicity studies, while doses of 0, 250, 500, and 1000 mg/kg were used in repeated toxicity studies. In the single dose toxicity test, oral administration of 5000 mg/kg of Glinus lotoides produced mortality in two females and one male on day 4. No significant differences in body and organ weights were observed between controls and treated surviving animals. Moreover, both gross and microscopic examinations of organs did not show detectable differences between controls and treated animals of both sexes. In repeated dose toxicity studies, no mortality was observed when varying doses of the extracts were administered per day for a period of 28 days. There were no significant differences in body weight, absolute and relative organ weights between controls and treated animals of both sexes. Hematological analysis showed no differences in most parameters examined. In the biochemistry parameter analysis, no significant change occurred. Pathologically, neither gross abnormalities nor histopathological changes were observed. These finding suggest that none of the organs appeared to be target and the data could provide satisfactory preclinical evidence of safety to launch clinical trial on standardized formulation of plant extracts.  相似文献

Quercetin and isorhamnetin are found in adequately large concentrations in the plant Dodonea viscosa (Sapindaceae). Plants that contain flavonoids are effective in the topical treatment of skin or mucous membrane inflammation. In this study, the release profiles of quercetin and isorhamnetin from hydrophilic, amphiphilic and lipophilic creams of the crude extract of Dodonea viscosa were determined using a multilayer membrane system. The results revealed that the hydrophilic cream provided the highest rate of release of both flavonoids while there was practically no release from the lipophilic cream. The hydrophilic cream may, therefore, serve most in delivering flavonoids to a diseased skin.  相似文献

This survey discusses the correlation between the oral potency of antialgesic drugs in several pharmacology laboratories and their human oral dose in clinical practice. We also present a brief overview of a few biological assays that have been successfully used to direct the synthesis of newer antialgesic drugs. The laboratory assay that our analysis showed to be most predictive of the clinical analgesic dose is based upon the response of rats to flexion of an arthritic joint. Laboratory ED50 values from the ACh-induced abdominal constriction assay in mice are nearly as predictive while the predictive power of the yeast-induced hyperalgesia assay in rats is somewhat less. Probably because of the small number of experiments, the correlation between the efficacy of these agents in a canine model of synovitis and their clinical doses only reached borderline statistical significance (p = 0.0651). Regression equations are presented that permit calculations of single clinical analgesic doses from efficacy data in individual tests. Calculation of stepwise multiple regression showed that the clinical dose could be best predicted when efficacy data obtained in the joint flexion assay in rats and the ACh-induced constriction assay in mice are both taken into account. We have concluded that the effective doses are highly predictive of clinical efficacy because these animal assays have been designed to reflect the action of drugs upon prostanoid-induced hyperalgesia.  相似文献

Community-based study of neurological disorders in rural central Ethiopia   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Between 1986 and 1988 a door-to-door survey was conducted on a stable rural population of 60,820 in central Ethiopia. Trained lay health workers made a complete census and identified cases with symptoms and signs of neurological disorders, using specially designed questionnaires which, in a previous pilot study, were found to have a sensitivity of 91% and specificity of 85%. Neurological disorders in the rural population were epilepsy, postpoliomyelitis paralysis, mental retardation, peripheral neuropathy (mainly due to leprosy), and deaf-mutism with prevalence rates (cases/100,000 population) of 520, 240, 170, 150 and 130, respectively. The prevalence rates of the other less common neurological disorders were 62 for hemiparesis (15 of which were for cerebrovascular accidents), 20 for cerebral palsy, 16 for optic atrophy, 12 for perceptive deafness, 10 for tropical spastic paraparesis, 7 for Parkinson's disease and 5 for motor neuron disease, ataxia and chorea/athetosis. Among related non-neurological conditions, blindness, locomotor disability and deafness were predominant. The significance and role of such a neuroepidemiological study in laying the strategies for the prevention of neurological disorders and rehabilitation of patients are discussed in the context of a developing country.  相似文献
