We have described the 17th century dispute on the nature of the poison of the viper and its possible use as an antidote which arose between published in Britain at that time. We have also seen the reciprocal interest of Charas and members of the Royal Society in each other's work, and how Charas settled in England for a few years at the time of discrimination against the Huguenots in France. We prefer to leave any conclusions from this story to individual readers. However the dispute seems to be part of a transition from an animate view of the world to one where empirical methods do not appear to need to invoke 'spirits'. The story also seems to illustrate the limitation of experiments there can still be disagreement. If there is a the feeling that the subject is of interest, we can broaden it to cover scientific exchanges and connections between British and French Scholars in the field of pharmaceutical chemistry in the 17th and 18th centuries. At that time a number of pharmacists and scientists moved or corresponded between the two countries influencing one another. That was when modern chemistry gradually evolved out of traditional origins.  相似文献

Abstract

We previously described increased HMGB1 and reduced FOXO1 dependent on CFTR loss of function in cystic fibrosis (CF) and we showed in vitro that HMGB1 was lowered by insulin. Reduced CFTR gene expression has been described in granulosa cells (GC) from PCOS-induced rats. We aimed at studying CFTR and FOXO1 gene expression in GC, HMGB1 concentrations in serum and follicular fluids (FF), and insulin and IL-6 in FF in PCOS women. Thirty PCOS and 36 non-PCOS women (CTRL) undergoing in vitro fertilization were enrolled. CFTR and FOXO1 gene expression were downregulated in PCOS (p?≤?.05). HMGB1 was higher in PCOS both in FF (p?≤?.05) and in serum (p?<?.005) whereas insulin was lower, and IL-6 was unchanged with respect to controls. 17-β estradiol was higher in PCOS than in CTRL (p?≤?.005). HMGB1 correlated negatively with insulin in FF (p?≤?.005). The increase in HMGB1 both in FF and in serum, likely reflects both low grade inflammation and insulin sensitivity. IL-6 was unchanged possibly reflecting functions other than inflammation.  相似文献

The synthesis of polyacetylene (PA) films, having interesting mechanical properties and improved air stability, was performed by means of catalytic systems with Ti(OBu)4 and aluminoxanes as cocatalysts (i.e. R2Al? O? AlR2, R2Al? S? AlR2, R2Al? N(n-Bu)? AlR2). Scanning electron microscopic characterizations, density and specific surface area measurements are indicative of films more dense than the ones polymerized by means of the classic Shirakawa and Luttinger methods. The aim of this work was to study, in vitro and in vivo, the behavior of a skin bioadhesive film containing lidocaine. The film characterization included drug transport studies through skin in vitro and in vivo tape stripping with and without iontophoresis. We studied the effect of drug loading in order to identify the release mechanism. Finally, the release rate was compared with a lidocaine commercial gel, to assess the therapeutic value. From the data obtained it can be concluded that the monolayer film acts as a water-permeable transdermal/dermal patch on application to the skin. The permeation kinetics across the skin was not linear, but the patch acted as a matrix controlling drug delivery. Additionally, the permeation rate increased with drug loading. The in vivo experiments with tape stripping indicated that the presence of water during film application is essential to achieve not only the proper adhesion but also an effective accumulation. The application of electric current to the patch can further increase the amount of drug accumulated in the stratum corneum.  相似文献

Data on 23 patients with low-grade non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHLs), 4 mantle (MT), 4 marginal zone (MZ), and 15 follicular (FL), were analyzed and compared with 10 high-risk (HR) B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemias (B-CLLs) with lymph node involvement and 4 diffuse large-cell lymphomas (DLCLs). A significant increase in circulating Vdelta1 T lymphocytes producing interleukin-4 (IL-4) was found in patients with FL, MT, and MZ NHL, at variance with DLCL and HR B-CLL. IL-4 was also detectable in the sera and lymph nodes of the same patients. In 19 of the 23 patients with NHL with increased circulating Vdelta1 T lymphocytes, B cells expressing the UL-16-binding proteins (ULBPs) ULBP2 or ULBP3 or both were found in peripheral blood, bone marrow, or lymph nodes. Of note, in HR B-CLL or in DLCL, where leukemic cells were negative for ULBPs, no Vdelta1 T-cell increase was found. Moreover, Vdelta1 T lymphocytes from patients with FL NHL proliferate in response to ULBP2+ and ULBP3+ lymphoma cells. Finally, patients with high expression of ULBPs, increased circulating Vdelta1 T lymphocytes, and high levels of serum IL-4 showed stable disease in a 1-year follow-up in contrast to patients with low circulating Vdelta1 T cells and undetectable IL-4 or ULBPs.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Human cord blood (CB) is an important source of stem cells which may be used for hematopoietic reconstitution as an alternative to bone marrow transplantation. Banking of CB would be accomplished by removing red blood cells (RBC) and plasma from CB collections. Our aim was to compare three different procedures for CB processing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Poligeline, hydroxyethyl starch gel (HES) and gelatin were used as separation media in processing 79 CB units for RBC depletion and mononuclear cell (MNC) recovery. RESULTS: The best MNC recoveries were obtained performing the HES- and the gelatin-based procedures (80.9 and 84.7%, respectively), but the gelatin procedure allowed us to obtain the highest RBC depletion (96.4%); CD34+ cell recovery was higher using HES or gelatin as separation media (85.6 and 85.9%, respectively). CONCLUSION: The best results, as far as RBC removal and MNC recovery are concerned, were obtained by using gelatin as RBC sedimentation medium. Gelatin is a low-cost, animal-derived reagent, which has been successfully used for CB transplantation; the procedure is simple to perform and appears to be suitable for large-scale banking in view of CB transplantation.  相似文献

Use of oral contraceptives and trauma during extraction are substantiated factors that contribute to dry socket. They appear to act by enhancing fibrinolytic activity in the alveolar bone followed by lysis of the clot. The influence of bacteria and antibiotics on the development and prevention of dry socket remains unclear. No convincing evidence can be found that factors such as age, sex, or nutritional status affect the incidence of dry socket.  相似文献
