Characterization of Benign Myocarditis Using Quantitative Delayed-Enhancement Imaging Based on Molli T1 Mapping

Delayed contrast enhancement after injection of a gadolinium-chelate (Gd-chelate) is a reference imaging method to detect myocardial tissue changes. Its localization within the thickness of the myocardial wall allows differentiating various pathological processes such as myocardial infarction (MI), inflammatory myocarditis, and cardiomyopathies. The aim of the study was first to characterize benign myocarditis using quantitative delayed-enhancement imaging and then to investigate whether the measure of the extracellular volume fraction (ECV) can be used to discriminate between MI and myocarditis.In 6 patients with acute benign myocarditis (32.2 ± 13.8 year-old, subepicardial late gadolinium enhancement [LGE]) and 18 patients with MI (52.3 ± 10.9 year-old, subendocardial/transmural LGE), myocardial T1 was determined using the Modified Look-Locker Imaging (MOLLI) sequence at 3 Tesla before and after Gd-chelate injection. T1 values were compared in LGE and normal regions of the myocardium. The myocardial T1 values were normalized to the T1 of blood, and the ECV was calculated from T1 values of myocardium and blood pre- and post-Gd injection.In both myocarditis and MI, the T1 was lower in LGE regions than in normal regions of the left ventricle. T1 of LGE areas was significantly higher in myocarditis than in MI (446.8 ± 45.8 vs 360.5 ± 66.9 ms, P = 0.003) and ECV was lower in myocarditis than in MI (34.5 ± 3.3 vs 53.8 ± 13.0 %, P = 0.004).Both inflammatory process and chronic fibrosis induce LGE (subepicardial in myocarditis and subendocardial in MI). The present study demonstrates that the determination of T1 and ECV is able to differentiate the 2 histological patterns.Further investigation will indicate whether the severity of ECV changes might help refine the predictive risk of LGE in myocarditis.     

Pharmacy in transition: A work sampling study of community pharmacists using smartphone technology

The nature of community pharmacy is changing, shifting from the preparation and distribution of medicines to the provision of cognitive pharmaceutical services (CPS); however, often the provision of traditional services leaves little time for innovative services. This study investigated the time community pharmacists spend on the tasks and activities of daily practice and to what extent they are able to implement CPS-related services in daily practice.

The need for a revival of psychoanalytic investigations into premature ejaculation

Although psychoanalysis was the first-choice treatment for premature ejaculation (PE) between 1920 and 1960, hardly any reports on its efficacy have been published. Moreover, a scientific debate about its findings has never been fully developed. The recent progress that has been made in the classification of three different PE syndromes creates a new opportunity for psychoanalytic investigations of men with complaints of PE, distinguished by the actual duration of their intravaginal ejaculation latency time (IELT). The term premature-like ejaculatory dysfunction has been introduced to distinguish men with self-perceived PE at normal and long IELT durations from those men with lifelong, acquired and normal variable PE. Psychoanalytic research may contribute to a better understanding of the consequences of objective early ejaculations on the unconscious mental life of men with the four forms of PE. By integrating neurobiological, clinical and epidemiological data of ejaculatory performance, a revival of psychoanalytic research of PE in the four distinct, classified PE groups, will probably contribute to a deeper insight in to the unconscious mental life of men affected by PE.     

Isolation impairs place preference conditioning to morphine but not aversive learning in mice

Morphine (8–100 mg/kg IP) induces place preference conditioning in mice. The effect of two different periods of isolation (15 and 30 days) was examined. Mice isolated for 15 days but not 30 days exhibited place preference conditioning to morphine (8 mg/kg). After 30 days of isolation morphine could not induce place preference conditioning with the following doses (8, 16, 64, 100 mg/kg). Social regrouping of male mice previously isolated for 30 days with naive female mice for 15 or 30 days resulted in a reappearance of the conditioned place preference to morphine (16 mg/kg). The specificity of this associative deficit was examined by testing learning in isolated compared to non-isolated mice in two distinct settings: escape learning in the Morris water maze and passive avoidance acquisition and retention. On the Morris water maze isolated mice did not differ from non-isolated mice regarding place learning, the probe trial or extinction. Isolated mice were unimpaired in passive avoidance acquisition and retention. It was concluded that the deficits in place preference conditioning were not the result of a global learning impairment in isolated mice. Establishment of a map of neurons in the brain of Eisenia fetida (Annelida, Oligochaeta) containing substances immunologically specific to vertebrate peptides

Several antisera specific to neuropeptides of vertebrates were applied to sections of the earthworm Eisenia fetida Sav. Some of them were able to reveal specific neurones of the supraoesophageal ganglion: h-GHRF, CRF, Leu- and Met-enkephalin, dynorphin, substance P, CCK-8, and CCK-8S. A map of different areas or nuclei was established in the brain, taking position of reactive cells into account. Four symmetrically paired nuclei and one mediodorsal nucleus were identified and plotted. There is generally no characteristic modification correlated with maturation of the worms. However, the reaction against anti-Leu-enkephalin differs significantly according to age of Eisenia in nucleus No. 1 and particularly in nuclei No. 2 where one cell group presents specific reactivity on and after puberty. Moreover, the successive application of two antisera to the same sections after elution showed no coexistence of substances in a single neurone. By comparison with these vertebrate peptide-like containing nerve cells, the assay to anti-5-HT showed only a few reactive aminergic neurones. An attempt of correlation of cellular types with reactive perikarya is started.
