The aim of this study was to measure the alterations in serum trace elements, including zinc and copper in patients with chronic hepatitis C and to compare them with the results of healthy individuals. Seventeen patients with chronic hepatitis C and 17 healthy individuals were included in this study. Serum zinc and cooper concentrations were measured by using atomic absorption spectrophotometer of patients with chronic hepatitis C and the results were statistically compared with those of healthy individuals. Serum zinc concentrations were 105.6+/-22.8 microg/dl in patients with chronic hepatitis C and 94.41+/-19 microg/dl in healthy controls, respectively. Serum copper concentrations were 103.17+/-20.8 microg/dl in patients with chronic hepatitis C and 90.8+/-14.3 microg/dl in healthy subjects, respectively. Serum zinc and copper concentrations were not found statistically different in patients with chronic hepatitis C compared with those of healthy individuals (p>0.05). In conclusion, serum trace element concentrations did not show statistical alterations in patients with chronic hepatitis C compared to healthy subjects. 相似文献

ATP dependent K channels (K-ATP) take part in the Erythropoietin (EPO) induced cardioprotection but these channel activations have role in cytoprotective role of EPO in the renal ischemia reperfusion (IR) damage is still unknown. For this purpose rats were pretreated with EPO (500 IU/kg) and/or K-ATP channel blocker glibenclamide (40mM/kg) i.p. before bilateral renal IR damage. Renal tissues were used for histological examination and measurement of caspase-3 and TNF-α levels. Renal functions were evaluated by glomerular filtration rate (GFR) fractional excretion of sodium (FENa) and potassium (FEK). Renal TNF-α and caspase-3 levels were decreased in both glibenclamide and EPO-treated IR rats compared to untreated rats. The protection afforded by the pretreatment with EPO alone was greater than that of administering glibenclamide alone. Application of glibenclamide at the same time partly abolished the cytoprotective effect of EPO treatment. K-ATP mediated cytoprotection is not the main mechanism of protective effect of EPO. 相似文献

Chemotherapy provides palliation and modest prolongation of symptom-free survival in metastatic breast cancer. Taxane containing regimens are commonly considered to be among the initials in metastatic setting due to earlier use of anthracyclines in the course of breast cancer. Therefore, we conducted this Phase II study to assess efficacy and safety of gemcitabine plus paclitaxel (GT) combination therapy in anthracycline pretreated metastatic first-line setting. Patients and Methods: The study enrolled 26 women with pathologically confirmed and measurable metastatic breast cancer who were previously treated with anthracycline but no prior chemotherapy for metastatic disease. Twenty six and twenty four patients were eligible for toxicity and efficacy evaluations respectively. Mean age was 47.3 years and median ECOG performance status was 0. Twenty patients (76.9 percent) had visceral metastases, most commonly located in liver and lung. Treatment schedule was as follows: paclitaxel 175 mg/m2 was administered intravenously in 3 hours on Day 1 and gemcitabine 1000 mg/m2 was administered intravenously in 30 minutes on Day 1 after paclitaxel application, and on Day 8 every 21 days. Results: Objective response rate was 41.7 percent (95 percent CI: 21.9-61.4) with 16.7 percent (95 percent CI: 1.7-31.6 percent) CR, and 25.0 percent (95 percent CI: 7.6-42.3 percent) PR. Median time to progression and overall survival were 9.6 and 14.5 months, respectively. Grade 3-4 toxicity was observed in 34.6 percent (9) patients. Treatment of two patients was discontinued due to toxicity, consisting of Grade 3 hypersensitivity reactions and Grade 4 infections in one patient each. Dose reductions due to myelotoxicity were performed in 4 (15.3 percent) patients. Hematologic toxicities were generally manageable with appropriate dose modifications and supportive care. Conclusion: Gemcitabine and paclitaxel combination regimen is effective and has manageable toxicity profile as first line metastatic setting. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to measure the alterations in serum trace element concentrations, including zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) in patients with brucellosis and to compare them with the results of healthy individuals. Seventy-five subjects, 60 patients with brucellosis and 15 healthy individuals were included in this study. The serum Zn and Cu concentrations were measured by using atomic absorbtion spectrophotometer in sera of patients with brucellosis and statistically compared with those of healthy individuals. Serum Cu concentration was found to be significantly higher in patients with brucellosis than that of healthy individual (130.5+/-24.7, 96+/-8.65 microg/dl, respectively) (p < 0.01). Serum Zn concentration was lower in patients with brucellosis than those of healthy subjects (79.5 +/-13.5 and 83+/-5.59 microg/dl, respectively) (p < 0.01). AIM: There is no comprehensive study that compares the different usage strategies of recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) in platinum-induced anemia. In order to clarify this issue, we conducted a prospective clinical study. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy-seven patients were studied in three main groups. Group 1 (n = 17) consisted of cancer patients without anemia. These patients received rHuEPO starting from the first chemotherapy cycle. Group 2 (n = 26) consisted of patients whose hemoglobin (Hb) values decreased by at least 1 g/dL after the first cycle of chemotherapy. Group 3 (n = 34) consisted of patients whose Hb values dropped below 10.5 g/dL after the second chemotherapy cycle. Groups 2 and 3 were each divided into two subgroups. In groups 1, 2A and 3A rHuEPO (5000 U/day subcutaneously three times a week) treatment was continued until three weeks after the completion of chemotherapy. In groups 2B and 3B, rHuEPO was given for 12 weeks only. RESULTS: There were no prominent differences between the Hb values of these groups throughout the chemotherapy cycles. Transfusion rates and the number of patients who became anemic were also not different between groups. CONCLUSION: No rHuEPO usage strategies are superior to others in terms of Hb levels and transfusion requirements. The decision as to when rHuEPO is to be added to platinum-containing therapy should be tailored to the health conditions of individual patients. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the associations of tooth loss with skeletal bone mass, years since menopause,
educational level, current smoking status, dietary calcium intake, and number of pregnancies in postmenopausal osteoporotic
women in Turkey. The study population consisted of 1171 postmenopausal women aged 40–86 years (mean age, 61.19 ± 7.28 years).
A detailed history was obtained from all women, including relevant lifestyle parameters, risk factors, and measurements of
weight and height. Women were separated into three groups according to the number of teeth remaining as group 1 (edentulous,
457 women), group 2 (10 or fewer teeth, 232 women), and group 3 (more than 10 teeth remaining, 482 women). There was no significant
difference among the three groups in mean age and menopausal age (P < 0.05). Body mass index of group 1 was significantly higher than that of group 2 (P < 0.01). Educational level was significantly different between three groups: groups 1 and 2 (P < 0.001), groups 1 and 3 (P < 0.0001), and groups 2 and 3 (P < 0.001). Educational level was lowest in group 1 and highest in group 3. Despite a low ratio of cigarette smoking in general,
a smoking habit was most prevalent in group 3 and least in group 2. The ratio of women receiving adequate calcium was significantly
lower in group 1 than in other groups (P < 0.001); mean calcium intake was similar in all groups. The number of pregnancies was significantly higher in group 1 than
in other groups (P < 0.001). Lumbar bone mineral density (BMD) of group 1 was significantly lower than that of groups 2 and 3 (P < 0.001). Although no significant difference was found between groups 1 and 3, femoral neck BMD of group 2 was less than in
others, and differences between groups 1 and 2 and between groups 2 and 3 (P < 0.001) were significant. Lumbar bone mineral content (BMC) of group 1 was significantly lower than that of groups 2 and
3 (P < 0.001), and lumbar BMC in group 2 was significantly higher than in group 3 (P < 0.05). Femoral neck BMC in group 1 was significantly higher than in groups 2 and 3 (P < 0.001). In conclusion, lumbar BMD and BMC in the edentulous group were significantly lower, whereas femoral neck BMD and
BMC were significantly higher in edentulous group compared with the others. Our findings indicated that improvement in lifestyle
factors and nutritional strategies for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis may have additional benefit in reducing
tooth loss.

The article describes a case of Graves' disease treated with methimazole and examines the influence of methimazole-induced alterations of thyroid hormone concentrations during warfarin therapy. A 22-year-old woman presented at our endocrinology outpatient clinic with palpitations, sweating, fatigue, tremors, and diarrhea. She had a pain in her right leg and had difficulty walking. Her thyroid profile was consistent with hyperthyroidism. The patient was treated with warfarin 5 mg once a day for deep vein thrombosis for 2 days. Since a therapeutic range of International Normalized Ratio levels could not be achieved, methimazole was stopped due to drug-drug interaction. Lithium was started instead. A euthyroid state was obtained in 2 weeks together with a therapeutic International Normalized Ratio level. Interactions between warfarin and drugs that alter thyroid hormone concentrations have been reported; however, the extent and significance of the interaction between methimazole and warfarin have been inadequately described. Concomitant therapy with warfarin and antithyroid drugs should be managed by frequent monitoring of both thyroid function and the International Normalized Ratio. Lithium is employed only to provide temporary control of thyrotoxicosis in patients who cannot take thionamide and iodide. The administration of lithium alone or in combination with other drugs is shown to be an effective method of controlling hyperthyroidism when conventional antithyroid drugs show adverse effects or become insufficient. When warfarins are used together with antithyroid medications, adequate anticoagulation may not be obtained due to drug-drug interactions. Lithium can be an alternative drug for antithyroid medication in patients on warfarin therapy. 相似文献

Richner-Hanhart syndrome (tyrosinemia type II) is a rare autosomal recessive disease associated with high serum tyrosine levels caused by the deficiency of tyrosine aminotransferase enzyme. We report a 15-year-old female patient with complaints of bilateral photophobia and tearing, which started during the infancy period. Biomicroscopic examination revealed bilateral circular corneal opacities on the inferior quadrant and small dendritic lesions at the center of the circular opacities. Blood tests showed a tyrosine level of 508 micromol/L (normal range: 30-150). On her dermatologic examination, plantar hyperkeratosis and seborrheic dermatitis were noted, and mild mental retardation was detected. One and a half months after the tyrosine- and phenylalanine-restricted diet, her tyrosine level dropped to 395 micromol/L level, her corneal lesions subsided, and a symptomatic relief was achieved. Tyrosinemia type II should be suspected in patients demonstrating dermatologic signs, especially palmoplantar keratosis, associated with bilateral pseudodendritic corneal lesions unresponsive to antiviral therapy. 相似文献
