Fracture of the metatarsal head is uncommon, and reports of isolated osteochondral fracture of the metatarsal head are rare. Because of the distal location of the fracture, it is difficult to achieve and maintain reduction, and potential complications include avascular necrosis and subchondral fatigue fracture. The authors present a case of an osteochondral fracture in a 40-year-old man, which was treated by open reduction and internal fixation with a single twist-off screw, with good results 12 months postoperatively.  相似文献

It is well established that the activation of T lymphocytes by mitogen/antigen is accompanied by a rise in intracellular free calcium ([Ca2+]i), changes in membrane potential, metabolism of inositol phospholipid, and activation of protein kinase C. Theseearly events of signal transduction culminate inlate events of lymphocyte activation, namely, DNA synthesis, lymphokine production, and cellular proliferation. In this study we examined the effect of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) on changes in membrane potential and [Ca2+]i levels. The membrane potentials were markedly decreased (depolarized) in T cell lines infected with HIV (H9/HTLV IIIb) and did not respond normally to phytohemagglutinin (PHA) or anti-T3 (anti-CD3) monoclonal antibody compared to uninfected H9 cell line. The basal [Ca2+]i levels in H9/HTLV IIIb cells were increased in comparison to those in H9 cells; however, there was very little further increase in [Ca2+]i in H9/HTLV IIIb cells following activation with PHA or anti-T3 monoclonal antibody. This is in contrast to a significant rise in [Ca2+]i in H9 cells following similar stimulation. These data demonstrate abnormalities in the plasma membrane potential and [Ca2+]i levels in chronically infected T cells with HIV. These abnormalities in signal transduction of the T-cell activation pathway could be responsible for T-cell dysfunction in patients with HIV infection.  相似文献

A case of a child with bilateral fleshy limbal masses with a coloboma of the right upper lid is discussed. Systemic examination revealed two patches of alopecia on the right frontoparietal and right occipital areas of the scalp. Punch biopsy and histopathological examination led to the diagnosis of Linear Nevus Sebaceus Syndrome (LNSS) with bilateral complex limbal choristomas. The authors have stated that they do not have a significant financial interest or other relatioship with any product manufacturer or provider of services discussed in this article. The authors also do not discuss the use of off-label products, which includes unlabeled, unapproved, or investigative products or devices.  相似文献

Herein, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) were greenly synthesized from Tridax procumbens aqueous leaf extract (TPE) and characterized physically (e.g., Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)) and biologically (test of their anti-diabetic activity). Anti-diabetic activities of TPE and TPE-derived ZnO NPs have been carried out in a streptozotocin (STZ)—induced diabetic rat model. Diabetes mellitus (DM) was induced with a single intraperitoneal dosage of the glucose analogue STZ (55 mg/Kg) known to be particularly toxic to pancreatic insulin-producing beta-cells. TPE and TPE-derived ZnO NPs were administered orally, once every day for 21 days in diabetic rats, at 100 and 200 mg/Kg, respectively. The standard antidiabetic medication, glibenclamide, was used as a control at a dose of 10 mg/Kg. Various parameters were investigated, including bodyweight (bw) variations, glycemia, lipidaemia, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and histopathological alterations in the rat’s liver and pancreas. The TPE-mediated NPs were small, spherical, stable, and uniform. Compared to TPE and, to a lesser extent, glibenclamide, TPE-derived ZnO NPs lowered blood glucose levels considerably (p < 0.05) and in a dose-dependent manner while preventing body weight loss. Further, positive benefits for both the lipid profile and glycated hemoglobin were also noticed with TPE-derived ZnO NPs. The histopathological assessment revealed that synthesized TPE-derived ZnO NPs are safe, non-toxic, and biocompatible. At 200 mg/Kg/day, TPE-derived ZnO NPs had a more substantial hypoglycemic response than at 100 mg/Kg/day. Thus, in this first reported experimental setting, ZnO NPs biosynthesized from the leaf extract of Tridax procumbens exert more potent anti-diabetic activity than TPE and glibenclamide. We conclude that such a greenly prepared nanomaterial may be a promising alternative or complementary (adjuvant) therapy, at least to the current Indian’s traditional medicine system. Translational findings are prompted in human populations to determine the efficacy of these NPs.  相似文献

Background:Oral cancer is often preceded by Potentially Malignant Disorders (PMDs) and important role of biochemical markers for early diagnosis has been well documented; however, there is limited evidence of Serum lactate dehydrogenase (SLDH) as an effective biochemical marker in diagnosis of PMDs. The present meta-analysis was conducted to assess if serum LDH can be a used as standard biomarker for PMDs and consequently aid in diagnosis of oral cancer. Methods:A comprehensive search was conducted in Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, EBSCO host, Cochrane databases and Google Scholar for studies evaluating estimation of SLDH in PMDs. Search strategy included all types of studies evaluating level of SLDH in patients with PMDs. PRISMA guidelines were followed for the meta-analysis. Fixed-effects model was used to assess the mean differences in SLDH levels between healthy controls and PMDs. Results:A total number of nine studies were included in meta-analysis after screening for inclusion and exclusion criteria. Potentially malignant disorder was significantly associated with increased serum LDH level compared to healthy controls (pooled SMD: 1.83 (95% CI, 1.52, 2.15) (P < 0.00001; Subgroup analysis of OSMF (Oral Submucous Fibrosis) studies showed significant association with increased serum LDH level compared to healthy controls (pooled SMD: 2.57 (95% CI, 2.16, 2.98; P < 0.00001). Sensitivity analysis for the five studies reflected a significant reduction in I2 values to 24 % (P=0.26). Funnel plots were derived for any evidence of publication bias among the studies. Conclusion:Meta-analysis suggests that SLDH is increased in potentially malignant disorders compared to healthy controls. The results of this metanalysis should encourage use of SLDH as a biomarker in diagnosis of PMDs.Key Words: Potentially malignant disorders (PMDs), oral cancer, lactate dehydrogenase enzyme, precancerous lesion  相似文献

Hesperidin, a flavanoglycone abundantly present in citrus fruits, is reported to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties. Previous reports from our laboratory indicated the neuroprotective effect of hesperidin against aluminum chloride (AlCl3)-induced memory loss, acetylcholine esterase hyperactivity, oxidative stress, and enhanced expression of amyloid β protein biosynthesis-related markers. However, their role on AlCl3-induced inflammation, caspase activation, Tau pathology, altered Akt/GSK 3β signaling pathway, and Aβ clearance marker has not yet been fully elucidated. Intraperitonial injection of AlCl3 (100 mg/kg body weight) for 60 days significantly elevated the expressions of insulin-degrading enzyme (IDE), cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK 5), and phosphoTau (pTau); inflammatory markers such as glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba-1), NF-kB, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-4, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS); and apoptotic markers including cytosolic cytochrome c (cyto c), caspase-3, caspase-8, and caspase-9, and lowered expressions of mitochondrial cyto c, phospho-Akt (pAkt) and phospho-glycogen synthase kinase-3β (pGSK-3β) in the hippocampus and cortex. Co-administration of hesperidin to AlCl3 rats for 60 days significantly ameliorated the aluminum-induced pathological changes. The behavioral studies also supported the above findings. Our results imply that treatment with hesperidin might be a potent option for treating the symptoms of cognitive impairment in Alzheimer’s disease by targeting its most prominent hallmarks.  相似文献

The choice of anticoagulant agents for newly implanted bioprosthetic valve varies significantly, particularly in the presence of postoperative atrial fibrillation with increasing use of nonvitamin K oral anticoagulation (NOACs) in recent years. We reported a challenging case with a coexisting bioprosthetic aortic valve thrombosis and significant anticoagulant-related bleeding. Clinical management strategy and brief literature review were presented.  相似文献
