A fibre optic potassium ion sensor has been developed based on reflectance measurements of the pH-dependent chromogenic crown ether 'Takagi reagent' immobilized on the non-ionic polymeric resin Amberlite XAD2. The sensor response is in the 1.5-100 mM range with a detection limit of 0.25 mM K+. The selectivity factor over sodium is 20. The proposed sensor works with a reproducibility of +/- 0.8% at the 5 mM K+ level. Advantageous design features include ease of construction, simplicity of use, reversibility, short response time (approximately 1 min) and an optimum working pH range (7.0-8.0) for biological fluids. This optical sensor was applied successfully to the direct determination of potassium in human serum. Aqueous potassium standards containing 0.13 M NaCl and a buffer of pH 8 were used for calibration.  相似文献

Patients with X-linked Ig deficiency with normal or elevatedIgM (HIGMX-1) fail to switch from IgM/IgD to other Ig isotypes.Interaction between the B cell antigen CD40 and the CD40 ligandexpressed on activated T cells is critical for T cell drivenisotype switching. We have reported that T lymphocytes fromthree unrelated male patients with HIGMX-1 failed to expressCD40 ligand on their surface, but the mRNA for CD40 ligand wasof an apparently normal size and level. Analysis of CD40 ligandcDNA from two of the patients revealed deletions that alterthe reading frame. Patient 1 displayed two mutations: a C Atransversion at nucleotide 590 and the deletion of an adjacentC nucleotide. The second patient had a 58 bp deletion from nucleotides289–346. The extensive use of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO‐NPs) in various industries and their wide range of applications have led to their accumulation in different ecological niches of the environment. This excess exposure raises the concern about its potential toxic effects on various organisms including humans. However, the hazardous potential of CuO‐NPs in the literature is elusive, and it is essential to study its toxicity in different biological models. Hence, we have conducted single acute dose (2000 mg/kg) and multiple dose subacute (30, 300 and 1000 mg/kg daily for 28 days) oral toxicity studies of CuO‐NPs in female albino Wistar rats following OECD guidelines 420 and 407 respectively. Blood analysis, tissue aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase and acetylcholinesterase, superoxide dismutase, catalase, lipid malondialdehyde and reduced glutathione assays, and histopathology of the tissues were carried out. The higher dose treatments of the acute and subacute study caused significant alterations in biochemical and antioxidant parameters of the liver, kidney and brain tissues of the rat. In addition, histopathological evaluation of these three organs of treated rats showed significantly high abnormalities in their histoarchitecture when compared to control rats. We infer from the results that the toxicity observed in the liver, kidney and brain of treated rats could be due to the increased generation of reactive oxygen species by CuO‐NPs.  相似文献

Objective

The safety of concurrent mood stabilizers during the course of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is yet to be clearly established. Delirium with concurrent administration of ECT and lithium carbonate is described in this case report.

Methods

A 30-year-old male with a past history of significant head injury developed delirium during the course of bitemporal ECT.

Results

The clinical picture and the details of the cognitive impairment have been discussed in the report with a focus on relationship between the lithium carbonate administration and the concurrent ECT.

Conclusion

Patients with preexisting organic brain damage could be prone to develop the cognitive adverse effect while on a combination of lithium and ECT. Possible interactions between lithium and ECT need further systematic evaluation.  相似文献
