Granulocytic sarcoma (chloroma), a rare tumor usually associated with myelogenous leukemia, is capable of invading the meninges or brain parenchyma. Radiologic findings in a case of granulocytic sarcoma of the brain, as well as those in 11 previously reported cases of intracranial leukemic masses, are interpreted. On computed tomographic scans, the lesions can appear isodense or hyperdense, edema and necrosis are variable, and there is uniform enhancement following intravenous administration of contrast material. There may be some affinity for the posterior fossa.  相似文献

Bone strength, a key determinant of fracture risk, has been shown to display clear sexual dimorphism after puberty. We sought to determine whether sex differences in bone mass and hip bone geometry as an index of strength exist in school‐age prepubertal children and the degree to which the differences are independent of body size and lean mass. We studied 3514 children whose whole‐body and hip scans were measured using the same densitometer (GE‐Lunar iDXA) at a mean age of 6.2 years. Hip dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans underwent hip structural analyses (HSA) with derivation of bone strength indices. Sex differences in these parameters were assessed by regression models adjusted for age, height, ethnicity, weight, and lean mass fraction (LMF). Whole‐body bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) levels were 1.3% and 4.3% higher in girls after adjustment by LMF. Independent of LMF, boys had 1.5% shorter femurs, 1.9% and 2.2% narrower shaft and femoral neck with 1.6% to 3.4% thicker cortices than girls. Consequent with this geometry configuration, girls observed 6.6% higher stresses in the medial femoral neck than boys. When considering LMF, the sexual differences on the derived bone strength indices were attenuated, suggesting that differences in muscle loads may reflect an innate disadvantage in bone strength in girls, as consequence of their lower muscular acquisition. In summary, we show that bone sexual dimorphism is already present at 6 years of age, with boys having stronger bones than girls, the relation of which is influenced by body composition and likely attributable to differential adaptation to mechanical loading. Our results support the view that early life interventions (ie, increased physical activity) targeted during the pre‐ and peripubertal stages may be of high importance, particularly in girls, because before puberty onset, muscle mass is strongly associated with bone density and geometry in children. © 2015 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.  相似文献

Many studies of caloric restriction (CR) in rodents and lower animals indicate that this nutritional manipulation retards aging processes, as evidenced by increased longevity, reduced pathology, and maintenance of physiological function in a more youthful state. The anti-aging effects of CR are believed to relate, at least in part, to changes in energy metabolism. We are attempting to determine whether similar effects occur in response to CR in nonhuman primates. Core (rectal) body temperature decreased progressively with age from 2 to 30 years in rhesus monkeys fed ad lib (controls) and is reduced by approximately 0.5 degrees C in age-matched monkeys subjected to 6 years of a 30% reduction in caloric intake. A short-term (1 month) 30% restriction of 2.5-year-old monkeys lowered subcutaneous body temperature by 1.0 degrees C. Indirect calorimetry showed that 24-hr energy expenditure was reduced by approximately 24% during short-term CR. The temporal association between reduced body temperature and energy expenditure suggests that reductions in body temperature relate to the induction of an energy conservation mechanism during CR. These reductions in body temperature and energy expenditure are consistent with findings in rodent studies in which aging rate was retarded by CR, now strengthening the possibility that CR may exert beneficial effects in primates analogous to those observed in rodents.  相似文献

Background: Cardiac opioid peptides have been identified to exert important adaptive metabolic signalling for cardioprotection against ischaemia or hypoxia‐related injury. Aims: To determine myocardial methionine‐enkephalin content in children with hypoxemic congenital heart defects and to correlate myocardial content of methionine‐enkephalin with the extent of arterial oxygen desaturation. Methods: Children (n= 20, median age of 16 months), undergoing cardiac surgical repair (tetralogy of Fallot, 17/20), were included in this study. Arterial oxygen saturation was measured on admission. Myocardial samples obtained during surgery were assayed via radioimmunochemistry for methionine‐enkephalin content. Results: Greater methionine‐enkephalin content was measured in the right ventricles of the patients suffering from recent cyanotic spells compared with those with no recent spells (cyanotic spells: 2418 ± 844 pg/g wet weight tissue, n= 6; no spells: 1175 ± 189 pg/g wet weight tissue, n= 14, P= 0.04). An inverse correlation was evident between the arterial oxygen saturation and myocardial methionine‐enkephalin content. Conclusion: Myocardial methionine‐enkephalin levels increase with the severity of hypoxic stress in congenital cardiac disease and may play an important adaptive role in countering adrenergic over‐activity and related excess demand on myocardial metabolic capacity.  相似文献

【目的】 探讨儿童牙龈炎与恒牙龋的相关关系,为儿童牙龈炎防治工作提供理论依据。 【方法】 采用多阶段分层整群随机抽样的方法共调查广州市12~13岁儿童1 115人。检查方法和标准参考1997年WHO推荐的《口腔健康调查基本方法》,牙龈炎检查六颗指数牙,龋病检查全口恒牙,分别采用牙龈指数(GI)和DMFT记录检查结果。Logistic回归分析儿童牙龈炎与恒牙龋病的关系。 【结果】 广州市12~13岁儿童牙龈炎患病率72.65%,中、重度牙龈炎患病率分别为28.16%和5.83%。恒牙龋患病率为25.83%,其中未充填龋占龋齿的73.73%。Logistic回归分析显示未充填龋是广州市12~13岁儿童牙龈炎患病的危险因素。 【结论】 广州市12~13岁儿童牙龈炎患病率较高,有未充填龋存在的儿童是广州市儿童牙龈炎重点防治人群。  相似文献

The effect of a 50% reduction in food intake on energy expenditure, protein metabolism, glucose cycling, and body composition was investigated in eight moderately overweight men. The prestudy mean calorie and protein intake was determined for eight subjects. They were then maintained on this diet for 6 weeks (mean +/- SEM, 3,269 +/- 75 kcal/d, 20.0 +/- 0.5 g N/d, period I), after which the diet was reduced uniformly in the major foodstuffs by 50% for the next 4 weeks (1,555 +/- 38 kcal/d, 9.6 +/- 5 g N/d, period II). At the end of each period we measured (1) body fat and fat free mass by underwater weighing, (2) 24-hour energy expenditure by indirect calorimetry in a calorimeter, (3) whole body protein synthesis and breakdown rates with 15N glycine, and (4) glucose cycling between glucose and glucose-6-phosphate and fructose cycling between fructose-6-phosphate and fructose-1,6 bisphosphate with 6,6-D2- and 2-D1-labeled glucose. The results were subjects lost 4.0 +/- 0.1 kg fat (by underwater weighing) during the 4 weeks on the reduced-energy regimen. Protein turnover and glucose cycling were reduced by 20% and 15%, respectively. Twenty-four-hour energy expenditure was 2,553 +/- 166 kcal/d for period I and 2,369 +/- 69 kcal/d for period II, giving a difference of 184 +/- 34 kcal/d between the two periods. BACKGROUND: The relation between physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) and percentage body fat (%BF) is not very strong in the general population. It is possible that variables such as sex, food intake, or both may in part explain this poor coupling. OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to show the relation between PAEE and %BF and to determine whether sex, food intake, or both influence the strength of the relation. DESIGN: We used doubly labeled water or energy intake balance, indirect calorimetry, dietary interview, and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry to measure total energy expenditure (TEE), resting energy expenditure (REE), food intake, and %BF, respectively, in 91 healthy persons (women: aged 48 y, 38.6%BF, n = 47; men: aged 47 y, 24.1%BF, n = 44). RESULTS: TEE, PAEE, and REE were significantly lower in women than in men. TEE was related to %BF in women (r = 0.53, P < 0.0001) but not in men (r = -0.22, P > 0.05). The relation between PAEE and %BF was significant in men (r = -0.34, P < 0.03) but not in women. PAL was also significantly related to %BF in men (r = -0.36, P < 0.02) but not in women. Macronutrient intake (% of total energy) did not differ significantly between the sexes, but carbohydrate (r = -0.44, P < 0.003) and fat (r = 0.31, P < 0.04) intakes were significantly related to %BF in women. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that the relation between PAEE and %BF is stronger in men than in women. Macronutrient composition seems have a stronger influence on %BF in women than in men.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to test whether daily alcohol intake can influence parameters related to rate of alcohol clearance and systemic alcohol exposure. METHOD: Postmenopausal women (N = 14) completed a study in which they consumed an alcohol treatment daily for 8 weeks. In a three-period crossover design, women consumed 0, 15 or 30 g/day ethanol, with each subject completing each treatment level. Following the 8-week adaptation period, the subjects consumed a single dose of 15 g ethanol, and breath samples collected to assess breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) every 5 minutes until the BrAC declined to zero. RESULTS: Adaptation to daily alcohol intake of 30 g/day resulted in reduced breath alcohol response compared to adaptation to 0 g/day. Specifically, area under the BrAC time curve was lower after women had consumed 30 g ethanol per day compared to that after daily consumption of 0 grams per day. Also, the time required for BrAC to decline to 0.01% after the bolus dose was reduced when subjects were adapted to 30g/day compared to 0 g/day. CONCLUSIONS: Daily intake of alcohol at a level of 30 g/day appears to be sufficient to alter the parameters related to systemic alcohol exposure.  相似文献

We have isolated the prosimian lemur homologues for STS and SRY. FISH unambiguously co-localized STS with SHOX, IL3RA, ANT3 and PRK into the meiotic X-Y pairing region (PAR) of lemurs. In contrast to the close proximity of SRY to the pseudoautosomal boundary (PAB) on the Y chromosome in simian primates, SRY maps distant from the PAR in lemurs. Most interestingly, we were able to determine a DNA sequence divergence of 12.5% between the human and lemur SRY HMG box. This divergence directs to a 52 million year period of separate evolution of human and lemur SRY genes. Phylogenetically, this time period falls in between the times that prosimians and New World monkeys branched from the human lineage. Thus, we conclude that approximately 52 million years ago a transposition of SRY into the ancestral eutherian PAR distal to STS and PRK defined a new PAB in a simian progenitor. By this event, STS and PRK, amongst other genes, were excluded from the X-Y crossover process and thus became susceptible to rearrangements and/or deterioration on the Y chromosome in simian primates.  相似文献

Thyroid hormones influence growth and differentiation of bone cells. In vivo and in vitro data indicate their importance for development and maintenance of the skeleton. Triiodothyronine (T3) inhibits proliferation and accelerates differentiation of osteoblasts. We studied the regulatory effect of T3 on markers of proliferation as well as on specific markers of the osteoblastic phenotype in cultured MC3T3-E1 cells at different time points. In parallel to the inhibitory effect on proliferation, T3 down-regulated histone H4 mRNA expression. Early genes (c-fos/c-jun) are highly expressed in proliferating cells and are down-regulated when the cells switch to differentiation. When MC3T3-E1 cells are cultured under serum-free conditions, basal c-fos/c-jun expressions are nearly undetectable. Under these conditions, c-fos/c-jun mRNAs can be stimulated by EGF, the effect of which is attenuated to about 46% by T3. In addition, T3 stimulated the expression at the mRNA and protein level of osteocalcin, a marker of mature osteoblasts and alkaline phosphatase activity. All these effects were more pronounced when cells were cultured for more than 6 days. These data indicate that T3 acts as a differentiation factor in osteoblasts by influencing the expression of cell cycle–regulated, of cell growth–regulated, and of phenotypic genes.
