Glucocorticoid-dependent complementation of a hepatoma cell variant defective in viral glycoprotein sorting.

We have utilized the rat hepatoma (HTC) cell sorting variant CR4 to examine the glucocorticoid-regulated pathways that localize mouse mammary tumor virus glycoproteins to the cell surface. The defective sorting of cell surface mouse mammary tumor virus glycoproteins in CR4 cells was complemented after fusion with either normal rat hepatocytes or uninfected HTC cells. Indirect immunofluorescence of transient heterokaryons revealed that the regulated localization of mouse mammary tumor virus glycoproteins was dependent upon glucocorticoid treatment and required de novo RNA and protein synthesis. Thus, a glucocorticoid-regulated trafficking activity, unrelated to mouse mammary tumor virus sequences, which is induced in both adult rat liver and cultured hepatoma cells, can act in trans to mediate an intracellular sorting pathway for membrane glycoproteins.     

The Alcohol Beverage Warning Label: When Did Knowledge Increase?

This article presents data on the awareness of the alcohol beverage warning label among a sample of 5,169 inner city African-American gravidas seeking prenatal care. While the label law was implemented in November 1989, a significant increase in knowledge of the label did not occur until March 1990. Women who predominantly consumed wine coolers and beer, and those under age 30 were more likely to know about the label than their counterparts.     

Premenstrual tension,expectancy, and mother-child relations

The role of expectancy in enhancing or mitigating premenstrual symptoms was examined in 51 mothers of preschoolers. Expectancy was manipulated by providing information either in support of a biological cause for genuine universal mood changes or in support of a psychological cause arising out of negative societal myths. A third group was given no information. Mood, cognitive function, and mother-child interaction were assessed both at midcycle and premenstrually, and the results suggested that expectancy enhances symptoms. The Psychological group lowered their symptom expectations and reported less negative mood premenstrually as well as fewer symptoms at the end of the test month. The other groups reported no change in symptoms and greater premenstrual negative mood than the Psychological group. All groups demonstrated greater task persistence and more positive motherchild interaction during the premenstrual phase.This study is based upon the doctoral dissertation completed in partial fulfillment of the Ph.D. degree from the University of Ottawa.     

Voices during sex: application of voice therapy to sexuality

Negative cognitions are capable of interfering with the natural flow of excitement and sexual desire at any point prior to, during, or following a sexual encounter. The source of these inimical thought patterns can be found in internalized parental attitudes that are transmitted intergenerationally and that also form the basis of sexual stereotyping. This paper describes the application of Voice Therapy methods to the resulting sexual problems manifested in many couple relationships. Clinical material excerpted from group sessions illustrate the content of the "voice" process--the negative cognitions--and demonstrate the angry affect that accompanies the verbalization of such thoughts and attitudes. Exposing self-attacks and critical thoughts about one's partner has proved to have positive results in terms of improved sexual relationships. Also discussed are those prevailing cultural views that function to reinforce each individual's "voice," thereby contributing to much of the sexual distress experienced in personal relationships.     

Treatment results in dental school orthodontic patients in 1983 and 1993

The effect of incremental changes in materials and techniques on orthodontic treatment outcomes is difficult to evaluate objectively. Treatment results for two groups of patients whose treatments were completed approximately 10 years apart were evaluated using the peer assessment rating (PAR) index and the index of orthodontic treatment need (IOTN) using the Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-rank test. Patients in the later group who had been treated by postgraduate students primarily (using fixed appliances) had significantly lower IOTN and PAR scores at the end of treatment and showed a significantly greater reduction in the PAR score than a similar group of patients in the earlier group. There were no significant differences in treatment results between patients in the early and late groups who were treated with removable appliances. Differences in treatment results were most likely the result of changes in materials and techniques that had occurred in the 10 intervening years.     

Canadian guidelines for economic evaluation of pharmaceuticals. Canadian Collaborative Workshop for Pharmacoeconomics

In 1994, Canada became the second country to release national guidelines for the economic evaluation of pharmaceuticals. The guidelines were developed over a period of 18 months through an elaborate process of broad consultation with a wide variety of relevant stakeholders. The intent of the guidelines is to provide guidance to doers and users of studies, by laying out the general 'state of the art' regarding methods, and by providing specific methodological advice on many matters. The aim is to improve the scientific quality and integrity of studies, and to enhance consistency and comparability across studies. This article presents the Canadian guidelines, both in summary and in detail. Because the techniques of economic evaluation are widely applicable beyond pharmaceuticals, the guidelines will be of interest to researchers and decision makers in all fields of healthcare. Because the methods are not country specific, the guidelines will be of interest to those in other countries as well as in Canada.
