The pituitary-adrenal responsiveness to a mild stressor was assessed in rats that were deprived of paradoxical sleep (PS) and in controls that were not deprived. Animals were either individually- or group-deprived for 96 h and hormone levels were assessed at 0, 5, 20 or 60 min after a saline injection+novelty and compared with rats which were not deprived. Both types of PS deprivation resulted in elevated adrenocorticotropin levels at 0 min, which peaked at 5 min in all animals. Individually-deprived rats exhibited the highest corticosterone (CORT) levels at 0 min. Peak levels were higher and occurred earlier in PS-deprived than in control rats (5 vs. 20 min, respectively). At 20 min, CORT levels had already returned to unstressed levels in PS-deprived rats, but not in control rats. These data indicate that PS deprivation induces facilitation of the adrenocortical response to a mild stressor, but do not suggest that PS deprivation changes the negative feedback sensitivity to CORT.  相似文献

The instrumental methods to induce paradoxical sleep (PS) deprivation are stressful. The modified multiple platform method (MMPM), in which animals are placed with new cohorts inside the water tanks, results in augmented ACTH and corticosterone (CORT) responses. We hypothesised that this increased response could be attributed to social instability. In addition, we tested a new environmental control, a grid (GR) placed on the tank floor. Animals were submitted to the MMPM for 4 days as socially unstable (UG--coming from several cages) or stable groups (SG--coming from one cage), placed either on narrow platforms or on the grid. All UG animals presented higher ACTH levels than their SG counterparts, including home-cage controls. CORT levels of manipulated animals were higher than controls only in the stable group. UG animals presented heavier adrenals than their SG counterparts. Only adrenals from SG animals placed on the grid were similar to cage controls. SG rats lost less weight than UG animals. While UG animals ate the same amount of chow as home-cage controls, SG animals ate more than control and UG animals. These results suggest that the stress of the MMPM can be attenuated in stable groups. The introduction of a grid on the tank floor may serve an adequate environmental control as far as stress-related variables are considered.  相似文献

For an effective radiotherapy the exact tumor location must be determined. The localization has to take into account patient's setup position as well as internal organ motion. Among the different localization methods, the use of a computer tomography (CT) scanner in the therapy room has been proposed recently. Achieving a CT with the patient on the therapy couch, a patient's treatment position is captured. We present a method to locate tumor considering internal organ motion and displacements due to respiration. We tested the method with prostate and lung patients. The method found the most probable tumor position as well as, for high-mobility tumors located in the lung, its trajectory during the respiratory cycle. The results of this novel method were validated by comparison with manually determined target position.  相似文献

Adult rats submitted to maternal deprivation (DEP) on post-natal day (pnd) 11 show smaller corticosterone (CORT) response to a saline injection than non-deprived (NDEP) rats, mainly at 30 days of age. In the present study we sought to investigate the pituitary-adrenal axis response of 30-day-old DEP rats to a 5-min open-field session, with lights and sound on. Hormone levels were assessed immediately or 20 min after the end of the stress, and were compared to basal levels. The immediate ACTH response of DEP females was the highest; this difference was no longer observed at 20 min, but hormone levels were still higher than basal. Both males and females showed an augmented CORT secretion immediately after the open field session, although only the response of NDEP females was higher than that of male counterparts. Moreover, DEP females showed a lower CORT response than their NDEP counterparts immediately after the stress. The CORT stress response remained equally elevated in males and females at the 20-min time point. Finally, DEP animals, regardless of the gender, ambulated more in the centre of the open field and displayed less grooming behaviour than NDEP pups, suggesting that DEP rats are less emotional than NDEP animals.  相似文献

We presented a case of asymptomatic myxoma of the tricuspid valve septal leaflet. The tumour was diagnosed accidentally during rutine transthoracic echocardiography and confirmed by transesophageal echocardiography. It was resected and the septal leaflet repaired during surgery.  相似文献

BackgroundTMT-1 arthrodesis is an established method in hallux valgus surgery, but it is technically demanding and typically calls for a period of postoperative immobilization.MethodsIn this cohort study, initial experience with a plantar plate is described. 58 patients (59 arthrodesis) were included.ResultsThe mean duration of protected full weight bearing was 7 weeks. 94.12% patients were satisfied with the results, bony union was achieved in 98.31%. The Foot Function Index improved by 33 to a mean of 8 (p < .001). The postoperative Mayo Clinic Forefoot Score was excellent in 47.04 and good in 47.04%. The mean hallux valgus angle improved by 24.4–13.2° (p < .001). The mean first intermetatarsal angle improved by 11.2–5.2° (p < .001).ConclusionInitial experience with this form of fixation appears to provide suitable stability, allow early-protected weight bearing, with an acceptable level of complications.  相似文献

Purpose  

Retrograde drilling of osteochondral lesions (OCLs) is a recommended, but demanding operative approach for revascularization of lesions in stage 1–3 according to Berndt and Harty after failed conservative treatment. The gold standard of intraoperative driller guidance is fluoroscopic control. Limitations are a 2D visualization of a 3D procedure and sometimes limited view of the OCL in fluoroscopy, leading to increased radiation exposure. A new image-free navigation procedure was evaluated for practicability and precision in first clinical applications.  相似文献

The need to use anaesthetised or restrained animals in acupuncture research in laboratory animals may represent a confounding variable, since both anaesthesia and stress alter the pain threshold and the activity of pain-related brain areas. In the current study we assessed the participation of the periaqueductal gray (PAG) in electroacupuncture's (EA) analgesic effects applied to the Zusanli point (36S) under carefully controlled stress conditions. Repeated immobilisation protocols (6 days, 1 h/day and 13 days, 2 h/day) were used to diminish the influence of acute immobilisation stress on c-Fos expression and analgesia (tail-flick test) induced by electroacupuncture on the 36S point (EA36S). Animals submitted to immobilisation alone (IMMO) or to electroacupuncture (100 Hz, 2-4 V, faradic wave) on a non-point region (EANP) were compared with animals submitted to electroacupuncture on the 36S point. In animals not previously submitted to repeated immobilisation, electroacupuncture on the 36S point induced analgesia and c-Fos expression in the PAG was not different from that induced by electroacupuncture at a non-acupuncture point. In animals submitted to repeated immobilisation (repeated immobilisation for 6 days or repeated immobilisation for 13 days), however, electroacupuncture on point 36S led to higher levels of analgesia and c-Fos expression, specifically in the ventrolateral PAG (vlPAG), as compared with animal groups subjected only to immobilisation or to electroacupuncture on a non-point. Our findings endorse previous results, and point to a specific part of the PAG involved in the effects of electroacupuncture at the Zusanli point.  相似文献
