Context: Tarragon [Artemisia dracunculus L. (Asteraceae)] is used as a commercial flavoring and in perfumery. In traditional folk medicine, tarragon has been used for treatment of pain and gastrointestinal disturbances.Objective: This study investigated the antinociceptive effect of the essential oil of A. dracunculus (EOAD) in various experimental models.Materials and methods: The median lethal dose (LD50) of EOAD was estimated using the method of Lorke. The antinociceptive effect was assessed using chemical (formalin and acetic acid) and thermal (hot-plate) nociceptive tests in rats and mice. In all experiments, EOAD was administered intraperitoneally at the doses of 10, 30, 100 and 300?mg/kg.Results: In the acute toxicity test, the value of estimated LD50 for EOAD was 1250?mg/kg. EOAD (100 and 300?mg/kg) significantly reduced (p?0.001) the pain response in the first (59.5 and 91.4%) and second (52.5 and 86.3%) phases of the formalin test, respectively. Central involvement in analgesic profile was confirmed by the hot-plate test, in which the EOAD showed a significant analgesic activity by increasing latency time. EOAD (10, 30, 100 and 300?mg/kg) significantly (p?0.001) inhibited (89, 95, 97 and 97%) the nociception produced by acetic acid. Naloxone failed to antagonize the antinociceptive effect of the essential oil in the acetic acid-induced writhing test. It seems that mechanism(s) other than opioid receptors is (are) involved in the analgesic effect of EOAD.Conclusions: This study reported the peripheral and central antinociceptive activity of the EOAD and rationalized the traditional use of the plant in the treatment of different painful conditions. 相似文献

Direct pulp capping (DPC) is coverage of exposed pulp by a biocompatible material after traumatic or carious exposure. The purpose of this procedure is to seal this spot against bacterial leakage, stimulate dentinal barrier formation, and maintain the vitality of the pulp. Several factors contribute to the consequence of this treatment, such as the kind of material used and the procedural technique. The aim of this study was to evaluate histologically the outcome of DPC using three methods. Thirty-six canine teeth of nine cats were selected for this experiment. After the cats had been anesthetized, the teeth were exposed under sterile condition. The teeth were randomly divided into three groups. In group I, the exposed pulp was covered with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) alone. In group II, the pulp, after being treated with erbium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) laser (energy = 200 mJ, pulse duration = 700 micros, repetition rate = 3 Hz, exposure time = 15 s, no air, no water, beam diameter = 0.6 mm), was covered with MTA. In group III, the pulp was treated with laser and covered with calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)(2)]. All cavities were filled with amalgam after DPC. After 4 months, the animals were sacrificed and block sections were prepared. The specimens were histologically evaluated. The data were analyzed by Mann-Whitney and chi-square tests. Dentinal barrier had formed in all groups. The laser + MTA group showed little superiority to the other groups in dentinal barrier formation, type and intensity of inflammatory responses, and soft tissue changes, especially necrosis, but these differences were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). We concluded that laser + MTA produced better healing. According to the conditions in this study, Er:YAG laser could be used in direct pulp capping treatment in combination with both common materials. 相似文献

Indirect immunoglobulin G (IgG) and IgM enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) with a recombinant GRA6 protein of Toxoplasma gondii were developed and evaluated for accurate diagnosis of recently acquired infection in pregnant women. According to the results from Toxoplasma serodiagnostic tests, women were classified into 3 groups representing acute (group I), chronic (group II), or no Toxoplasma infection (group III). To discriminate group I from group II sera, the GRA6–IgG-ELISA reached sensitivity and specificity of 87.5% and 94.1%, respectively. Although 22 (91.7%) of 24 group I sera were positive by the GRA6–IgM-ELISA, only 1 (2.9%) of 34 group II sera scored positive. The GRA6–IgM-ELISA displayed a meaningful correlation with Vidas Toxo IgM and exhibited higher specificity (97.1%) than Euroimmun IgM ELISA (88.2%) (Euroimmun, Lübeck, Germany) for detection of recent infection. These results demonstrate that IgG and IgM ELISA with rGRA6 are useful to identify and discriminate recent from past Toxoplasma infection in pregnant women. 相似文献

Leeches (phylum: Annelida, class: hirudinea) could infest wide range of livestock such as cow, buffalo, sheep, goat, horse, mule, ass, dog, pig and even human. In November 2013, a 3-year old jackass from Dehloran county, Ilam province, Iran, was infected through his mouth due to drinking spring water. Symptoms including stress, anxiety and tachycardia were seen. After examining oral cavity of jackass, a leech was observed in upper gum. The leech was measured after separation which was three inches in length. The leech was adult which has dark green with orange lines, and it was identified as Limnatis nilotica species. It seems that using spring, subterranean water, pond etc. is the main causes of livestock infestation with leech. Ranchers could be recommended to decontaminate leech waters to prevent further leech infestation cases. 相似文献
